April 4, 1997 - This spring there's been a lot of attention about flooding in western Minneosta, but floodwaters are predicted to cause problems in parts of the Twin Cities as well, especially in the St. Croix River Valley. The St. Croix River is rising and the weather service is predicting it'll crest in less than two weeks almost two feet higher than it did in 1993. February 11, 1997 - A quickly growing company nestled in the tiny northwestern Minnesota town of Carlstad is quickly getting an international reputation for it unique product. The company's called "Mattracks." They make something that can transform a standard four wheel drive pick up truck into an all terrain machine capable of driving through almost anything. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports.
February 7, 1997 - Within the next several weeks the local telephone market will be opening up to free market competition just as the long distance monopoly was broken apart in the early 1980's. Throughout the country, companies that control local phone lines are scrambling to protect themselves as regulators welcome outside competitors into what's been their territory. In Minnesota US West says it's being forced to offer newcomers an unfair advantage that could lead to a deterioration of the local phone network. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports.

The team unveiled an architect's model of the retractable roof ball park it hopes to build in downtown Minneapolis.
January 24, 1997 - This winter is on track to go down as one of the coldest winters on record. The price of fuel oil and natural gas is up significantly. And that combination is leaving thousands of people around the region unable to pay their heating bills. Nearly HALF of the U.S. Senate has petitioned the President to release hundreds of MILLIONS of dollars in emergency heating assistance to help people make it through the winter. January 8, 1997 - There are an estimated 600 THOUSAND cellular telephones in Minnesota and that number is expected to grow rapidly. As the number of cell phone owners increases, so too is the number of calls to 911. Dispatchers are getting thousands of calls a day and many of the calls ARE NOT true emergencies. The State Patrole is now looking into screening cellular 911 calls to make sure real emergencies get through. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports...

September 3, 1996 - Today was the first day of the 1996-97 school year. It also marked the first day of high school for the "Class of 2000." In four years today's 14 and 15 year old ninth graders will graduate at the beginning of the 21st century.
