April 2, 1998 - Federal Emergency and Management Agency Director James Lee Witt will tour tornado-damaged areas of Minnesota tomorrow. FEMA representatives have been in the area ever since Sunday's storm assessing damages and assistance needs. FEMA's damage assessment is nearly complete. The agency could release that assessment tomorrow. In St. Peter, the town's hospital has reopened its emergency room. Dr. Bill Shores is a physician at the hospital. March 31, 1998 - Local, State and Federal officals began a preliminary assessment of the tornado damage this afternoon. Governor Carlson says he fully expects the southern Minnesota communities hit by Sunday's tornadoes to qualify for federal assistance. The St. Peter High school suffered extensive damage, and principal Jeff Olson says the building can't be used for the rest of the school year: Jeff Olson, the principal of St. Peter High School. February 20, 1998 - Very early this morning, the ladies figure skating came to a dramatic conclusion in Nagano, with Americans Tara Lipinsky winning the gold, and Michelle Kwan, the silver. Now only a handful of events remain before Sunday's closing ceremonies. A few medals have yet to be awarded in short track speedskating, men's hockey, skiing, biathlon and bobsled, and then it's all over until 2002, when the games begin in Salt Lake City. Jay Weiner, who's been covering the Olympics for the Star-Tribune newspaper, sizes up these games.

September 9, 1997 - Minnesota based Courage Center says unemployment among the disabled is way too high, and is costing the U.S. more than $200-billion every year. The center is out with a new report showing the unemployment rate for all people with disabilities stands at 48-percent. People with severe disabilities, defined as disabilities leaving the person unable to perform activities of daily living, face an unemployment rate of 74-percent. The Courage Center's Katie Knips says many of those people want to take a job and can take one.
August 20, 1997 - Its been almost six months since Phillip Bither came from the Flynn Theater for the performing arts in Burlington Vermont to be curator of Performing Arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He knew that replacing his predecessor John Killacky was going to be a huge challenge, and one of the reasons he has kept such a low profile so far is because he has been hard at work preparing his first season. Now he is ready... promising a series of cutting edge music, performace art and dance featuring such well known as the Wooster Group and the Sun Ra Arkestra as well as those less well known in the U.S. such as the Teatro Tinglado puppets from mexico and the DV* Physical Theater from Britain. I spoke with Bither this afternoon and asked how the performers he might bring to the Walker might be different from those John Killacky presented.
