New FM 91.1 Minneapolis-Saint Paul Twin City weather forecast sunny through the afternoon high temperature in the low to mid-80s clear and cool tonight and then sunny and pretty hot tomorrow with a high temperature in the upper 80s. It's 12 Hello everybody and welcome to the Minnesota State Fair. This is Garrison Keillor at the Minnesota Public Radio Booth out under a beautiful blue Sunny sky with a whole crowd of people gathered here as we do our annual Minnesota quiz questions some delicate some very easy about Minnesota History and politics and sports and entertainment and the arts for prizes. We're giving away today some dinky some decent prices off for these folks come out today to the Minnesota State Fair. our Minnesota Public Radio Booth is directly across the street from the world's largest lefse, which is rolled up almost a quarter mile and links. in a circle just across the street from here down the street from the dairy building is made down in Spring Grove, Minnesota baked on the community tennis courts and brought up here to Saint Paul on a caravan of 11 flatbed trucks hits has sugar in it and butter of course and there is a small train you can ride to actually go through the lesson. It's something that's new this year. There's a lot that's new at the State Fair the major change at the State Fair in the last year is the attorneys for the fair took a close. Look at the Minnesota state constitution a large document that almost nobody has red in Minnesota for 4 years and years and years and I discovered a probation in the Constitution that exempts the state fair from state law. 410 days a year This is made it possible to introduce casino gambling to the fair. And it's a huge huge thing here the fairgrounds as you and I knew them in our childhood. We're excavated to make 18 levels of underground parking and many of the buildings that you know are all gone replaced by Brick casinos home activities as a casino now in education and the Fine Arts building the penny arcade and the grandstand where you used to buy screen doors and indoor outdoor carpeting that's all casinos now blackjack tables craps tables roulette wheels and thousands and thousands of slot machines. Freeway has been brought into the state fair now. Pier 94 has the come through. And all of this underground parking means that attendance at the fair today for example is 650000 people and it's only noon. And yet the streets are practically deserted. I remember this fair is an outdoor Fair people walking up and down and stopping at the food boats, but when they put in the new buildings out here, of course, they put in a Skyway system at the fair and now the streets are practically practically empty the old church dining Halls that you and I remember have been put on Jack's about 10 feet on the iron to bring them up to up to Skyway level. Lots has changed the spell used to be an agricultural Exposition where people from out State Minnesota farms and small towns would have a chance to come into the city beautiful small towns. Don't want to come to the city anymore because it's dangerous in the city and because of because they shop bye. Bye. Bye direct mail by phone 800 number still catalogs to the show Home Shopping Network, then I'll come to the city anymore and they have 90 a hundred a hundred and twenty cable channels out stage. So the Twin Cities is not the big deal that it used to be. So this is my Affair instead for City people or for gentlemen Farmers gentlemen Farmers Only five acre plots around the Twin Cities whose liabilities lie in the field and their Assets in town. And this fair is now for mainly for them. The Horticulture building now is devoted mainly to coffee beans and some crudites. Therarub new rides, of course, you're there six kind of an ankle twirl at the fair and a recliner ride. There's there's some the Skyride which you may remember that that's cylinder that that rose up on a on a high above the trees on its Tower is now a ride called the salad spinner. You get in it with a lot of go to chop silage and it goes round at terrific speed impresses you with your back against the against the wall. It's them. It's very exciting Machinery hill now is devoted mainly to exercise machinery stairmasters and Nordic tracks and the like they don't have those big tractors there anymore. The swine Barn has been changed over now. It's a Walmart people didn't really We're interested in looking at pigs anymore. But otherwise, the fair is much as it was when you and I were children supplies for City people to come and come into close contact with large animals the rest of the year. We would not ordinarily meet and it's a chance for us to eat freely and to add layers of fat for The Long Winter that's coming on. To walk around here and to eat at a rate that if we continue to it through the year. We would be unable to walk and we would need the services of a forklift. But we were able to do this for one day out of the year and this is our day. Who's eaten the most out of this group here so far who holds the record as of as of 12 noon? Yeah you have what's your name? Where you from Reed Reed of Golden Valley what if you have to eat so far rate? corn dog and lemonade going to buy you food. What are you taking your time selecting? What's what's next for you? Read at the fair? There's some great rides not too far from here. The conservation building is still here and there's a walleye Pole. At the conservation building you ride in a little boat, like the old male except you're pulled by teams of a 15 walleyes who are who are in harness? And you hold a pole ahead of the boat with the lure in the water. So it's a kind of a self-propelling thing. Have you written on this yet? The ankle twirl might be fun for you. You haven't you haven't heard back from you. Just you lie on a cushion and they clamp these clamps around your ankles that are attached long chains and they twirl you 50 feet up in the air round and round and round and round. You don't want to do this right after you eat in a couple of corn dogs, but maybe maybe later in the day because you have money for a ride right now. How much money does a young person get nowadays to go to the fair? I don't know. I used to get $3. I was given $3. Let's find out here. What's your name? Where you from? Where you from Nick Mankato Mankato, how much do kids in Mankato get when they come to the fair? What? liquid Aren't you here with a family or something? My aunt is my sister. I say did Anna get any money. It's not right there raising kids strict in Mankato now. How much money would you like to have neck if you could have as much as you wanted? At the fair great wonderful day. We're going to ask some questions now in and open the floor for our annual Minnesota quiz. I have the questions on slips of paper and they're in my pockets in my left inside coat pocket or questions about the Arts. I believe I have some general questions in my right pocket about geography in general things Sports meditainment is in my right lower jacket pocket in my left pocket. I think his questions about business and things like that and in my hip pocket my back left Hip Pocket are questions about politics. Here's how this quiz works. And you and you want to redeem yourself you can get back into the quiz by either singing your high school song. Or by reciting a poem of greater than four lines in length, or if you and I know somebody in common. If we have a mutual acquaintance, then I'll let you back in and you can try again on the first question. If you answer the first question and then you answer the second question, then you got a decent price and if you want to go on for the big prize, which is that leather jacket a very cool leather jacket on stage. You can answer the third question if you're very very bold. Okay, that's how it works completely Fair. And I am the judge.
