The business of the convention the right now Gary at least here in the convention hall is in Oregon serenade that's going on is the first delegate begin straggling in for the scheduled opening of a convention tonight at about 7:30. I might know that we are broadcasting from the pressbox high above the convention floor that of course so provides a marvelous vantage point on what's happening and it's already caused us to be checked out by Secret Service agents who told us that will be an agent with us tomorrow during that period when a former Governor Reagan and first lady Betty Ford are addressing the convention and other things that are happening our Debbie Gage was just a few minutes ago kicked out of the platform committee hearings going on here at the Saint Paul Civic Center Debbie what was going on before they politely ask you to lie. Well dick despite what the Republicans like to think the platform right now is not all that interesting. They've taken abortion era gun control in the stadium out and put it on a straw ballot, but it make it controversial of some of the day.Tempter wait to Northern minnesotans appear before the platform committee and pleaded that the GOP take a position on milepost 7 one of them was Clinton Maxwell a reserve mining engineer. He said that the reserve workers have to go to the Republicans because the dfl did nothing for them. It's a mockery. It's a dfl controlled State who is against industry at the FL can still control State and governor who just don't give a damn about 7,000 workers in northeastern, Minnesota. Or $2,000 workers went to the region dfl State Convention in Duluth. They were politely received and listen to but absolutely no action was taken on their behalf and the dfl governor ran and hid from them. Let's show these 7000 working people at the Minnesota independent Republican party does. Care let the Minnesota independent Republican party go strongly on record in support of milepost 7 Maxwell. The platform committee is still meeting now and they have no idea how long it will take. But before I was asked to leave I did talk with former Governor Harold the Vander who's the chairman of the platform committee, and I asked him if Reserve would be included. That we were the whole series this year was under strict regulations that we are going to going to have that three or platforms are the three divisions out of each of the 12 subcommittees. And now this afternoon we've gotten enough to double at over again. So we're going to have to have the problem of whether we expand the platform leave it the way it was originally contemplated and refer these matters to a tooth to a study because the different concept is now that these 12 subcommittees will be ongoing committees and that they will not only work like in the past years a month or two before a convention. They will be study committees that will be analyzing and studying and processing and turning out and recommending material as we go along. That was former Governor Harold levander who's the chairman of the platform committee this year? There were several issues that came up this afternoon, but none of them were really very significant. There was a rather interesting long to beat on regionalism which a little embarrassing because Governor levander design that when he was governor and all the Republicans hate it now and they want it repealed. There was also a long very intense sermon from the wife of a Lutheran Minister against the sexual attitudes reassessment program at the University of Minnesota at program shows pornographic films, and she said that it's against the judeo-christian ethic because it condones of fornication Debbie. The the question seems to be will this straw ballot process hold where things that these controversial issue is would be handled in a rather 9 controversial way that is a just put to a vote of the delegates in and let that stand or if you sense there's going to be a struggle to have them debated some of these issues on the floor. I really don't know at this point. There was some pressure in the platform. Afternoon to have the results of the straw ballot be included in the platform as definite Republican stands and that did receive Applause. It was proposed by a couple of people but outside of that. It looks like there's pretty tight control. Well based on my experience with past Republican conventions or which have been pretty cut-and-dried and dfl conventions, which have tended be kind of Wild and Woolly and uncontrolled are the recent dfl convention in Duluth was really rather tame and this one looks like it could be live like we're all going to be in excellent shape. I suspect by the end of the three days. We've been running up and down the stairs a lot to these various committee hearings and the back to our Press Box. I above the convention floor Bob Potter, you're just back from the rules committee. We talked earlier about that controversial 98.1 by the Ford backers on this whole matter of how the national convention delegates will be selected the at-large delegates. I understand the rules committee did deal with some other matters as well. Well, yes dick the controversy between the supporters of Reagan and President Ford in the rules committee also spilled over into platform matters what you and Debbie were just talking about one of the suggested rules, of course called for handling controversial issues by written valid only with no debate on majority of the convention delegates could have overturned that and brought the issue up. However, Reagan supporters appear to be Allied at least Loosely with some anti-abortion forces at the convention and after losing on the process for selecting National delegates Rules Committee Member Jerry Arnold who is Reagan supporter moved at the section of the rules on controversial issues be deleted it was and that will be yet another section of the rules which will provoke Lively debate after the convention finally convenes formally in about 40 minutes as well. As we said it may be a much livelier much more interesting than normal state to Independent Republican convention is party chairman Chuck Slocum. Get out. This is the first time it's been known as an independent Republican convention in Minnesota. The main order of business continues to be the Scramble for votes with the actual of vote on that matter of selecting at-large delegates to the National Convention is slated at least at this point for Friday evening with Bob Potter Debbie Gage and John Murley at the Saint Paul Civic Center. This is take daily.
