There will be no more suspense over the nomination than at the G-O-P convention two weeks ago, but Minnesota's 91 delegates say their convention will provide more substance. And they say it will offer more diversity. Nearly a quarter of Minnesota's delegates represent ethnic minorities. Democrats say that's in sharp contrast with the Republicans. August 14, 2000 - MPR’s Michael Choo reports on a speech Walter Mondale made at The Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Several Minnesotans will play prominent roles in the opening session, including state auditor Judi Dutcher who left the Republicans for the DFL last winter. Former Vice-President Mondale spoke during a breakfast with Minnesota delegates.
August 7, 2000 - Minnesota has never elected a woman to the United States Senate -- but that will change this year if Rebecca Yanisch has her way. The Minneapolis D-F-Ler is the only female major party candidate seeking to challenge incumbent Republican Rod Grams. Although she's never held elected office, Yanisch is counting on her experiences growing up in the Red River Valley and her time as Minneapolis' top development official to propel her through the D-F-L primary to a match-up with Grams in November. July 31, 2000 - The Republican National Convention kicks off today in Philadelphia. The gathering will culminate Thursday night with the formal endorsement of Texas Governor George W. Bush as the G-O-P's presidential nominee. Although the party's major decisions have been made in advance of the convention, Minnesota's delegation say there's still reason to be excited. July 13, 2000 - The campaign for control of the state legislature got an unofficial kick-off today. As nineteen Independence Party hopefuls filed their candidacies with the Secretary of State's office, House Republicans introduced their slate of potential freshman lawmakers. July 12, 2000 - A new poll suggests Texas Governor George W. Bush could be the first Republian presidential candidate to carry Minnesota since Richard Nixon's 1972 victory. A survey conducted for Minnesota Public Radio, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and KARE-11 T-V shows Bush and Vice-President Al Gore in a statistical dead heat among likely Minnesota voters.
