March 18, 2003 - The Prairie Island Tribal Council has reached a tentative agreement with Xcel Energy to allow additional storage casks at the Prairie Island nuclear plant. If ratified next month by tribal members, the agreement would mean one less obstacle for Xcel as it seeks approval from the Legislature to store more nuclear waste at the site. Officials say if no additional storage is granted, the plant will have to shut down in 2007. Minnesota Public Radio's Marisa Helms reports.

February 7, 2003 - An organization representing the state's private colleges and universities is pushing for a change in the way Minnesota finances higher education. The Minnesota Private College Council has been arguing for more state grant money for about 15 years, they and they believe the current state budget problems may provide the best environment for their initiative to finally succeed. Critics say the Council's proposal would hurt students and the public colleges they attend. Minnesota Public Radio's Marisa Helms reports.

December 17, 2002 - Representatives of the Minnesota immigrant community are joining officials from the Immigration and Naturalization Service to encourage foreign visitors to comply with a new registration law. The U.S. government is requiring all non immigrant visitors from certain countries to register with the INS over the next two months. Minnesota Public Radio's Marisa Helms reports.

December 10, 2002 - Minnesota's colleges and universities are about to go online with a new federal electronic database designed to track the state's nearly 9 thousand international students. The idea for a system to track foreigners emerged after terrorists bombed the World Trade Center in 1993. The project was a low priority for years. But, post-September 11th anti-terrorism legislation put the database on the fast track. International students say they don't mind the increased scrutiny, as long as it doesn't lead to discrimination against them. Minnesota Public Radio's Marisa Helms reports.
October 28, 2002 - MPR’s Marisa Helms reports on the reaction and mourning of Minnesotans after the death of Paul Wellstone. Many of those mourning the loss of Senator Paul Wellstone say they hope his political legacy will live on. Wellstone died in a plane crash Friday along with his wife Sheila, daughter Marcia, three campaign workers and two pilots.
