January 8, 1974 - Reporter Kevin McKiernan summarizes events on the opening day of the trials. Dennis Banks and Russell Means, the first to be tried in St. Paul, appeared in court. Jury selection in Judge Fred Nichols' courtroom began with questions to the possible first witness, a high school principal. McKiernan talks bout the kinds of questions the witnesses are being asked from a list of some 300 supplied by both sides. McKiernan listed a number of questions, and talked about answers given by the juror, the first of 31 prospective and available jurors. He says at this pace jury selection will be a long process, followed by a trial which may then take several months.
December 8, 1973 - Opening arguments are given in the Wounded Knee trial of Russell Means and Dennis Banks in St. Paul.
November 27, 1973 - Representatives from the DNR and the Leech Lake Band of Chippewa Indians -- Commissioner Robert Herbst and Tribal Chairman David Moonow & Secretary Treasurer Cy Howard, respectively -- discuss the recent decision to add a one dollar surcharge to hunting and fishing licenses to compensate the tribe for losses incurred by sport hunting and vacation hunters from outside the reservation.
October 4, 1973 - Brief report on American Indian Movement (AIM) rally at University of Minnesota on September 25, 1973, followed by various speeches from rally. Speakers included Allan Spear, Angela Davis and Russell Means.
September 18, 1973 - Vine Deloria Jr., a treaties expert and author of "In Utmost Good Faith" and "We Talk, You Listen," talks with Kevin McKiernan. Topics include religion, treaties, and Wounded Knee.
September 14, 1973 - Ten percent of population in Rapid City is Indian. Mayor of Rapid City, Don Barnett, talks about problems with some Indian citizens, the assimilation of Indians, the need to respect Indian culture. Talks about AIM leaders not being from South Dakota. Mayor says "It's a white society, not an Indian society". The idea of a reservation is a bad idea, it's like a cage, the concept of the reservation has failed.
September 4, 1973 - MPR’s Kevin McKiernan interviews unknown responder to AIM attorney Mark Lane’s accusation of FBI agents harassing his office.
September 4, 1973 - The FBI stakeout car's license plate was recorded by two legal workers who were subsequently arrested. Action was taken against the FBI for false arrest. There are currently 54 FBI agents in South Dakota; usually there are five. 48 are stationed in Rapid City. Mark Lane, attorney representing AIM, talks about FBI harassment in South Dakota. He comments on John Dean's (at the Watergate hearings) remarks on taping the activities of American Indians, FBI agents' testimonies, guns removed from agents in court, government conspiracy against American Indians, and goon squads that resulted with a little girl shot in eye.
September 3, 1973 - MPR’s Kevin McKiernan reports on the condition and fall out from shooting of AIM leader Clyde Bellecourt.
September 2, 1973 - MPR’s Kevin McKiernan interviews unknown speaker, most likely Vernon Bellecourt, after arrest with Russell Means at Baptist Hospital while visiting Clyde Bellecourt on Aug. 30, which immediately followed indictments handed down by the Indian grand jury in Custer.
