July 12, 2000 - According to a report in today's Washington Post, merger discussions between American Airlines and Northwest Airlines have picked up significantly in recent days. American has reportedly offered to pay Northwest 3.7 billion dollars or 44 dollars a share to take over the airline. Northwest is reportedly asking for at least 65 dollars a share. The deal would also include Delta Airlines who would buy Northwest's 14 percent share of Continental Airlines. Ernest Arvai (ARE vee) is an airline analyst with the Arvai Group.
July 11, 2000 - Heavy rains over the weekend also caused flooding in Eagan where about 200 homes sustained serious water damage. The city got nearly 15 inches of rain in two days, overwhelming its storm sewer system. Eagan Mayor Pat Awada says damage estimates could reach the 8-million dollar mark, and most of that damage is to homes and other private property. Much of that property was not insured against flooding. Mark Kulda is the spokesman for the Insurance Federation of Minnesota. He's on the line now.
July 10, 2000 - At a seminar today the education forum will address holding students, and schools, accountable for their performances. It will include a discussion of high-stakes tests. Margaret Goertz (Gerts-- like shirts) will participate in that seminar. She's a professor of education policy at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education, and is on the line now.

July 7, 2000 - Twin Cities commuters who thought road construction was slowing them down ALREADY are about to see a major project start right in the heart of the Cities. Interstate 94 between Minneapolis and St. Paul will be closed completely over the weekends in July. Joining us to talk about the project is Kent Barnard (BAR-nerd), who's with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
July 7, 2000 - A group of Minneapolis middle school students has just returned from a 10-day trip to West Africa. They visited Senegal and Gambia as part of a program created by We Win Institute in Minneapolis to encourage academic and social success among African-American students. Part of the goal of their trip was to improve the relationship between African-American students and recent African immigrants in Minneapolis schools. The kids visited historical sites and experienced a traditional rites of passage ceremony. Two of them have come by the studio this morning.
July 5, 2000 - A Minnesota men's singing group called the Apollo Male Chorus will be the only men's chorus from the United States to compete in what's considered the Super Bowl of amateur choral competitions. Forty members of the chorus are leaving Minnesota later today to compete in the Eisteddfod International Choral competition in Wales. Joining us in the studio is Tomm Johnson, president of the Apollo Male Chorus.
