January 16, 1974 - Former North Dakota Governor William Guy announces his intention to run for the U.S. Senate.
January 17, 1974 - Dr. Paul Ellwood chairman of the HMO study group, InterStudy, says HMOs don't need to be subsidized by government. He said this in response to a comment made by AMA President Russell Roth, who said HMOs shouldn't receive federal funding. Ellwood says the HMO model is not accepted yet by the medical community because it's new and unproven. Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin is an example of how an HMO can serve a rural area.

He discusses how to choose the best HMO for your needs, how to file a grievance, what to do if the HMO goes under, and other helpful information.
January 21, 1974 - Elisabeth Mann Borges, an expert on maritime law and the protection of the environment, speaking at Nobel Conference X: The Quest for Peace held at Gustavus Adolphus College. Borges’ speech was titled “The World Communities as a Peace System.”
