Midday, the longest running MPR news program, began as an extension of a daily half hour noon newscast called “Midday Report.” In September 1971 it expanded into various longer iterations, running weekdays, as well as encompassing some weekend programming. During this period, it was described as: “A program of news and information, a calendar of the day’s cultural events and the environmental report.” In January 1972 the name changed to Midday, and a month later it was described as: “A program of news, consumer and environmental information, discussion of public issues, and reports by the MPR and NPR news staffs."
Separate MPR public affairs programming were featured, such as Spectrum, Sportfolio, MPR Special, Insight, Weekend, Forum, and MPR’s Mainstreet Radio, among others. Local programming was also featured, including Westminster Town Hall Forum, Carlson Lecture Series, Minnesota Meeting, Minnesota Press Club, and Mondale Policy Forum. National outside programming included Options, Horizons, Communique, National Press Club, Chappaqua Lecture, Ford Hall Forum, Commonwealth Club, among others; and interview shows from the likes of Studs Terkel, William F. Buckley and Nancy Fushan.
As the years progressed, the “Interview” and “Call-in” would become a regular format for Midday. Beginning in the mid-1970’s until 1992, Midday was hosted by Bob Potter, after which, Gary Eichten became the permanent host. Many guest hosts also participated over the years. During the Eichten era, Midday became a daily two-hour program staple, running from 11AM-1PM. Midday ended its run in January 2012, when long-time host Eichten retired.

July 30, 1977 - MPR's Debbie Gage and Yvonne Pearson talk with Twin Cities residents Noha Ismail and Nadav Carmel, who present the viewpoint of the Palestinian people on the Middle East conflict.
July 30, 1977 - MPR’s Bob Potter presents “The Role of the Courts in a Changing Society: Divorce, Voices in the Wind,” a documentary that examines Minnesota divorce laws. Includes such topics as how divorce law in Minnesota has changed from "fault" to "no-fault", alimony, child support, visitation, post-dissolution problems, and the role of attorneys.
August 6, 1977 - Dr. David Cooperman, University of Minnesota sociology professor; and Robert Friedmann, graduate student at the University, present a pro-Israeli view on some aspects of the Middle East conflict. The moderator for the discussion is MPR’s Bob Potter.
August 13, 1977 - On this regional public affairs program, Bruce Vento, congressman of Minnesota's 4th district of St. Paul, talks with MPR’s Bob Potter and answers listener questions. Topics included energy bill, BCWA, and child abuse.
August 15, 1977 - In a speech he calls 'self interview,' author Kurt Vonnegut, a former chemist, anthropologist and car dealer, discusses his careers and his inspirations for writing.
August 18, 1977 - This program features excerpts from a recent rural life conference for young people in Southwestern Minnesota, including speeches by Dr, Jon Wefald, president of Southwest State University in Marshall: Roger Blobaum, agricultural consultant; Thomas Wyman, president of Green Giant Company; Congressman Richard Nolan of Minnesota's Sixth District; Father John McRaith, executive director of the Catholic Rural Life Conference; and Minnesota Senator Hubert H. Humphrey.
August 19, 1977 - This continuation of excerpts from the rural life conference for young people held in Marshall, Minnesota, features speeches by Dr. Charles Reinert, professor of physics at Southwest State University; Roger Blobaum, agricultural consultant; Calvin Beale, head of the Population Studies Group of the United States Department of Agriculture; Minnesota's Sixth District Congressman Richard Nolan; and former Sixth District Congressman John Zwach.
August 20, 1977 - On this regional public affairs program, guests Richard Miller, a Minneapolis alderman; Doug Frisbie, member of the Governor's Crime Commission; and Jim DeLaittre, an officer with the Minneapolis Police Department, discuss new concepts that the city of Minneapolis is considering in the fight against neighborhood burglary and street robbery.
