December 18, 2000 - One of Minnesota's ten Presidential electors is Minneapolis City Council member Joan Campbell. She says like most electors, she was selected at a Democratic Party convention.
December 18, 2000 - U-S News and World Report has named a University Of Minnesota Reseacher one of the nation's ten leading innovators in science and technology. Dr. Catherine Verfaillie heads the University's new Stem Cell Research Institute. Stem Cells are the so-called "mother cells" that have the ability to divide for indefinite periods and give rise to specialized cells in the body. Verfaillie came to Minnesota in 1987 after studying medicine in her native Belgium. I asked her how she became interested in stem cell research:
December 18, 2000 - Minnesota's ten electors met today to cast ballots for Democratic Vice President Al Gore, who won the state's popular vote. Usually, nobody pays much attention to the electoral college, but in this unusual election year the details of electing a new president have captured public interest. While the outcome of today's ceremony was never in doubt, it was not without a couple of glitches. Minnesota Public Radio's Laura McCallum reports.
December 19, 2000 - Minnesota could be headed for one of its deadliest traffic years in two decades. The state's Department of Public Safety said yesterday that over forty more people have been killed in traffic accidents this year than at this same point last year. Kathy Swanson, director of Minnesota's Office of Traffic Safety, says that rise is reason for concern.
December 19, 2000 - The Minnesota Attorney General's office advised Governor Ventura nearly two years ago that he is a state employee subject to conflict of interest laws. The memo was released during a legislative hearing today on whether the Governor must abide by the state ethics code, and whether his new XFL contract violates the code. Ventura says lawmakers who criticize his moonlighting have too much time on their hands. Minnesota Public Radio's Laura McCallum reports.
December 19, 2000 - Minnesota led the nation in voter turnout this year. Statistics released this week by the Committee for the Study of the American Electorate show almost 69 percent of elegible Minnesota voters went to the polls on election day. The next closest state was Maine, with 67 percent. Curtis Gans, the committee's director, says Minnesota has been first or second for a number of years.
