MPR News Presents broadcast of New York University historian Thomas Sugrue speaking at the Minnesota Historical Society's "History Forum.” Sugrue has written a book exploring the stories of Northern activists who challenged racial inequality titled "Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North." Prominently featured in this book is Anna Arnold Hedgeman, who grew up in Anoka and was the first African-American to attend Hamline.
Hedgeman worked for social justice for many decades and was the only woman on the organizing committee for the 1963 March on Washington.
