With recovery efforts taking place at the site of the I-35W bridge collapse, Midday discusses ambiguous loss and how to be resilient in the face of trauma. Guest Pauline Boss, University of Minnesota professor emeritus of Family Social Science, discusses loss involving missing loved ones.
Boss is the nation's recognized expert on the concept of ambiguous loss and has spent the last several years working with people directly affected by tragedies like the 35W bridge collapse…most notably, the families of the 9/11 victims in New York. Most recently, she has been working with the Veterans Administration on ways to help returning Iraq war veterans.
On August 1, 2007, the 39-year-old I-35W bridge suffered a catastrophic failure. The collapse of bridge resulted in commuter casualties and left the city of Minneapolis in a state of shock.
