Hubert Humphrey's former press secretary Norman Sherman told the audience at today's Mondale lecture that Humphrey's personality played a key role in his success as a Senator. Sherman remembered how Humphrey instructed his staff to be nice to their political opponents - key Southern senators angry at Humphrey for his support of civil rights.
Led by former Vice President Walter Mondale, a group of Hubert Humphrey associates gathered in Minneapolis today to analyze his public service. The event at the University of Minnesota was part of Mondale's, "50 Years" series of lectures, which reflect on his years in politics. Mondale recalled serving as Senator from Minnesota during the 89th Congress. John Kennedy was President, and Mondale said nearly every piece of major legislation passed by the Democratically controlled Senate had Hubert Humphrey's mark on it.
