It also is Earth Day tomorrow. Yeah, and while we give our schedule guests a chance to maybe slip in here just at the last minute to bring you an interview here with the Gaylord Nelson former US senator from Wisconsin the founder of Earth Day 1970 way back. When is that right the sequel to which is coming up tomorrow Earth Day 1990. They're expecting some 200 million people to participate in Earth Day 1990 activities tomorrow all across the world. Not just the United States in Denver. This time around is Senator Nelson is with the Wilderness Society in Washington. We had a chance to talk with him a couple of weeks ago and he told us that his goals for that first Earth Day Back in 1970 were actually rather modest almost the sole purpose of Earth organizing Earth day was to get a demonstration so big that it would force this issue on to the attention of the political establishment.Which method wasn't paying any attention to it. And so that was an educational aspect but my main purpose and organizing was that and I was satisfied to having spoken in some 3738 states around the nation in the previous eight nine years that the public was way ahead of the politicians. So I organized it and it became a huge demonstration much larger than even I had for 20 million people involved in and saved exactly what I had hoped it would if it made the issue part of the political dialogue of the country and it has been in the political Arena where it has to be ever sinceWithout having achieved without that happening. We wouldn't be doing anything about these issues. All the issues are but major portion of the issues have to be settled in the political arena with you know, the mileage achievement for requirements for automobiles that clean air legislation clean water legislation. Hazardous waste dumps. All of this is in the political Arena. So that was the achievement of Earth Day 1970. Now ever since then every year the interest in the concern of the public has grown almost geometrically so we now have a much better informed than concern public than we had Back in 1970 years ago was the public was ahead of of the political process. I think I think so, then I hadn't the sense that the public wants more down than the political establishment is prepared to undertake. As of now set a good reason for Earth Day 1990. Well, I would guess I think the main purpose of Earth Day 1990 is the same to get another huge demonstration to reaffirm give the public a chance to reaffirm its concern about the environment. This will again impress the political establishment the president the members of Congress legislators all over the all of the country that the public is here there. They're waiting for leadership. They're prepared to support it. They're concerned about what's happening to the environment that surrounds them. And so that that I would say is the main purpose. Of course, it's worldwide this time. I didn't try to organize anything other than Nationwide. In fact, I only raised $190,000 to spend during that whole year 69 and 10/72 are late. It has a tremendous educational impact after all, how do you ever get to one subject?Considered by every school from grade school high school college in the nation over a. Of a number of weeks and how do you get a subject that's in the papers almost daily Earth Day activities on the cover of magazines. So all of this results in sensitizing educating I am getting people concern more concerned more understanding of what's going on around them. Were you surprised by the the public response to Earth Day 1970 the number of people who got involved. Well, it was it was turn out to be bigger than I had hoped for. I knew it would be I was satisfied that it would be very large or I wouldn't work tonight. Is it the sole purpose for the major purpose was to impress the political Community if it was going to be a flop I wouldn't have done it. I was satisfied from speaking in some 30s 37 states that the public would respond the fact isI underestimated the responded to response was even much greater than I had to help for every time I speak or anybody speaks on this issue. One of the questions inevitably is why it is the most important environmental issue then people list exponential population growth, which is very important to the threat of global warming or deforestation air pollution ocean pollution. They're all very important. But in my view Far and Away, the most important issue is the lack of a conservation. They have taken our culture. Is if we so we have to raise a generation that is viewed and its heart to mine with a conservation ethic and have to take that says be careful what you do when you intrude into the works of Nature and you're pretty optimistic about all of this optimistic. I wouldn't be driving this kind around this country speaking to colleges and Young Folks all over the country. Why bother if it do it we can do it. We have never addressed. We haven't had any leadership. The president hasn't even given a speech yet. I can put his agenda is for the environment. All of this comes along very slowly. The I think we have to raise a conservation generation imbued with the Sapphic. I perceive that developing in this country were far ahead of where they we were when I organizedEarth Day 1970 and that's former, Wisconsin the u.s. Senator Gaylord Nelson now with the Wilderness Society in Washington DC the founder of Earth Day 1970.
