By (00:31:37) the way. Oh, we all have a lot more on the election. We're trying to pull together a good deal more on those Congressional races out. Especially the 7th District of course and also try to take a look at what happened down in the southwest where Vin Weber almost lost. We'll hear from Joyce Rudy perpich Cal Lutheran take a look at the dfl control of the house some other items that were going to be looking at we'll find out who the new interim director of the SPC always and have some information on that and we're going to have a report from the funeral today that was held for David Mack the former Minneapolis police officer, who course got shot and came out of the went into a coma was only the second person apparently in medical history to come out of a persistent vegetative state and then died over the weekend. (00:32:24) Yeah. Okay. Well, it sounds like it's a busy day with a lot of things going on besides the election believe it or not including that spco interim director Stanislaus Grove a chesky name to that post today Beth friend chatted with him and we will have more of that conversation coming up later in this portion of midday as we get down towards the end. But we're going to continue talking about elections here because that is it has been such a popular subject. And since we just got finished with all of the legislative races, we might as well continue on talking about some of these things the Democrats gathered at the Radisson Metrodome last night where there are certainly to celebrate their Victory their big victory by Rudy perpich and what they didn't know at the time of course was the big victory in the House of Representatives, but the Democrats also have their eyes on 1988 and certainly the United States Senate race, that will be held at ear. George Busey has a report (00:33:21) For those Democrats who have concentrated (00:33:23) their efforts at the top of the ticket campaign 86 had been over for weeks and much of the idle gossip time had been spent speculating on campaign 88 the probability of a senate race between incumbent Republican David durenberger and a top vote getter with the Humphrey name has had political salivating privately for some time and they made their desires public Tuesday night it all started when dfl chair Ruth s Le issued a statement even before the polls closed on Election 86 saying that the dfl would Target durenberger for the next two years. Although SLA did not mention Humphrey by name. She did know that the senate seat now held by durenberger was once held by Humphreys father the late vice president and Minnesota senator Hubert H Humphrey and during an interview. She said that attorney general. Skip Humphrey would be a viable Contender for the office. (00:34:21) Well, I think that you know there he's a several things going for him. He's got an outstanding record as attorney general and he's been out with the people over the years. He certainly has a very familiar name in Minnesota politics. And I think that he'd be able to raise the kind of funds that we would need to unseat Senator during Burger (00:34:38) campaign fever. The 1988 strain was catching lieutenant governor Marlene Johnson introduced Humphrey to the crowd at the 86 Victory party as Senator Humphrey and it was clear that she was not referring to the state senate position. He had held before being elected attorney general Humphrey loved it and immediately started talking like an unannounced candidate and the crowd loved that our party must replace a United States senator who has lost touch with the needs of (00:35:09) minnesotans. Thank you. Thank you. I want you to know I appreciate the expression of confidence of Marlene Johnson and so many others (00:35:34) I pledge to you that I will work hard as I can possibly do and I want you to join me in the pledge that we will all work hard to elect a Democratic president and to elect a United States Senator that we can all be proud of and we'll move (00:35:47) forward. For his part durenberger says he's (00:35:51) been campaigning for term number three since winning term number two for years ago as to the Humphrey challenge. He said he's not look beyond the name. I (00:36:03) know about the Humphrey name and that's about you know, that's about all I know and so it's hard to tell exactly what what kind of an agenda he would bring to bear in the race. It would be much easier. If you'd asked me about Jerry Sikorsky or one of the congressman who have a record in public service that relates to policy issuance. Skip those never had to be part of the legislative process at least of the since he left the the state senate and at a national on on National disher (00:36:41) independent Republican US senator David durenberger who is expected to face attorney general. Skip Humphrey In the next election, I'm George Busey and it's about 22 minutes before one o'clock. Now the midday program that we had planned on bringing you today United Auto Workers Union president. Douglas Fraser will be rescheduled for another time because of the crush of election results and election related developments. A lot of you have been curious about what's been going on. So we thought it would be appropriate to devote almost the complete our to election returns and related things today. I will bring you up to date on some other news developments and we will be hearing a little bit from the new interim director of the st. Paul chamber orchestra. Stanislavski. OVA chesky before the hour is up. I don't know if you picked it up as Gary and I were reading the legislative results, but there seem to be a pattern of to a certain extent of losses in the southwestern part of the state by Republicans and we have a report from Mark style. Now that suggests that this development the frustration of people with Real problem as having swept a number of incumbents out of office in the southwest and this apparently took quite a few people by surprise. Here's marks report (00:37:56) there were expectations that dfl would pick up some seats in southwest Minnesota because of the rural dissatisfaction, but no one expected the reversal which took place gone is IR state representative Wendell Erickson of Hills who had served since 1964 the second longest in the house also rejected were first term state representatives Jim bore boom of Cottonwood Carol. Thank of Worthington and Dennis frederiksen of Windham along with state. Senator Dorn Isaacson of Startin in their place are Andy Steensma of Laverne normed oblique of Milroy Ted winter a full de Katie Olson of Sherbourne and Murray County farmer Jim bickerman Steensma of Luverne says, this is why he won my wife and I hear went through the town. So I visited a number of farms and I think I was pretty much straight forward on issues. I told people what I thought and Disagree, but at least I knew where I stood and I think that had a lot to do with it and I think the just the world crisis. I think a lot of people learn new that there to be something different newly elected state representative Steensma winter and oblique all were active in the early stages of the farm activist group Groundswell Steensma went to st. Paul to Rally winter drove a tractor through January cold to the state capital to call attention to the farm situation newly-elected dfl state senator vickerman of Murray County says, he believes he was elected because of voter dissatisfaction with ir. Rural policies. I think the feeling was there that they have done something but they had kind of forgot about this smaller businessmen and and Rural people in and that's a good way of life that we really have and want to keep having a farm hurting I'm gonna have to be a full-time farmer myself, but when you get corn down to 95 cents to a dollar a day, there's just no way we can survive along with the newly elected dear Fellers incumbent Democratic state. Senator, Gary to Kramer was also re-elected. He defeated IR Mike many of Edgerton many earlier this year had sought the IR gubernatorial nomination. This is Mark style in (00:39:56) Worthington. We might hear a little bit more about the mic mening contest in just a few minutes here. There's a race that we've been following rather extensively in the Highland Park area of st. Paul just as kind of an example of what goes on in legislative campaign District 64b chose dfl endorsed candidate Howard orenstein over independent Republican bill Batcher. You probably caught that as Gary and I were reading the list a little bit earlier. We did follow the race during the campaign with reports on the candidates their spouses the campaign managers the fundraising and the other aspects of the campaign Dan Olson followed the campaign and he was at the candidates election night headquarters last night. (00:40:41) Were made back there. Yeah. All right. I have a very important announcement to make (00:40:48) Ornstein campaign worker Catherine key born had just come from a Precinct with a vote total and she was going to savor every (00:40:55) moment. the absentee ballots first and Howard lost on the Ave by one of those on the absent one what I want to highlight on the final tally Batcher 192 Orange Dean 392 (00:41:39) moments later another volunteer brought in the results of the final Precinct and what had been suspected was confirmed 30 year old Howard Ornstein and attorney and a newcomer to the Highland Park area would be the state representative from house district 64b to the several dozen supporters gathered in the downstairs room of parishes Supper Club on West 7th the flr Howard orange team gave a victory statement. It's hard to find words to express my gratitude to all of you in this room tonight. So many of you have been with me for over a year now as we worked and worked and worked I owe it all to all of you who have who have been there at in the precinct caucuses. I remember after the caucuses were held in the delegates were elected and we had some coffees and I said, I want to make sure you come out to the convention and the other meeting I want you to come to is on November 4th when we're going to have a dfl victory in this area and you made it come true. Not far away at his home 34 year old Bill Batcher a Ramsey County management analyst and the independent Republican endorsed candidate watch the trends reflected in the precinct by Precinct totals turnout in 64b had been heavy as usual 70% by one estimate but keep recent had not gone as predicted standing by a kitchen counter and facing about two dozen family and friends Bill Batcher offered his thanks and after saying good night to some of those heading out the door Badger Paws to offer his philosophy on the (00:43:06) outcome. When you get into this this business, I'm there's no guarantee that you're going to win and you have to put the whole race into a larger perspective and I realize very clearly over the last few weeks that I really had nothing to lose. You know, if I if I win the race then I'm going to have to work very hard at the legislature to serve the district. But if I don't win the race I see I have my family. I've made a lot of friends in the course of the campaign. I've been a lot of people it it really became for me a no-lose (00:43:42) situation outside the home of Bill Batcher the night was clear and crisp the door knocking leafleting and telephone calling was over the voters of house district 64b had chosen Howard orenstein estate representative. This is Dan Olson reporting (00:43:57) 15 minutes. Now before one o'clock is our special election returns edition of midday continues another specific legislative race that attracted a good deal of attention and I suppose it's because of the fact that one of the candidates was involved in the gubernatorial campaign earlier was one down in Southwestern Minnesota. It was a hotly contested race and went to the dfl were incumbent Gary de Kramer won a second term over IR candidate Marion Mike menning in District 27 will call on reporter Mark style. Once again for his (00:44:30) report the race featured several heated debates between many who ran unsuccessfully As for the earlier this year for the IR gubernatorial nomination and incumbent to Kramer of Ghent many who lives in Edgerton blames his loss on the general IR slump which saw the party lose its House Majority. He said the poor rural economy was a major factor Democrats asked the question. You know, if you're happy the way things are going vote for Republicans, if you're not vote for the Democrats and I think that the people spoke and the ball is in the Democrats courts during the campaign meaning accused of the dfl of trying to spend its way out of the rural crisis for his part to Kramer had this assessment of the outcome real message of this election. I really think is the politics of negativism and Minnesota is dead and that rural Minnesota is alive and it's kicking and we offered a clear choice of styles a thousand attacks and divides people and I think a style that came from this campaign that makes us want to work together to creamer says the farm situation will continue to be a major focus of his along with tax reform job creation and education funding for many the Lost leaves him without a political base, but he says he'll stay active in Minnesota politics. I'm sure I'll be around politically. I believe that I will continue to tell my story. That we can no longer afford this this huge huge spending many had served in the State House and Senate as a Democrat. He switched parties before making his bid for this year's IR gubernatorial nomination the race turned on the candidates home counties while the Kramer one his lion by almost 1800 votes many lost Pipestone County by more than 500 votes. This is Mark style in (00:46:21) Worthington. And so we pretty much wrap up the situation with the Minnesota State Legislative races, the Minnesota in the Minnesota house. The Democrats will hold an 83 251 majority based on the way. The returns are looking right now in the state senate the DF Elders have widened their majority 247 220 based on the way things. Look at the moment in legislative races in bordering states Democrats are on the verge of taking control of the senate in North Dakota for the first time in history. Democrats won 12 seats in the 53 member North Dakota Senate and are leading in seven races in South Dakota Democrats gained a seat in that state Senate and have a chance to pick up more than half a dozen seats in the state house. But Republicans are still assured of keeping majorities in both chambers of the South Dakota legislature as The Unofficial returns trickle in today in Iowa voters handed second terms to Republican. Senator Charles Grassley and Governor Terry Branstad, two men who would work to distance themselves to a certain extent from President Reagan's Farm policies. Also in the state of North Dakota voters throughout an incumbent u.s. Senator, they rejected a proposed state lottery and Sunday liquor sales. No retail sales not liquor sales retail sales report from Dave some doll (00:47:47) Republican Mark Andrews spoke slowly when he greeted party faithful early this morning telling them. He wasn't going back to Washington after 23 years as a congressman that Where Senator but I'm not going to stay up here and say everything looks Rosie. It doesn't look nearly as bright as we had hoped it would but the brightness of your face and the warmth of your welcome is the thing that makes all of the difference in the world and if North Dakota, of course is chosen to go with different leadership in the future. We're all going to work together to make it the best. We possibly can and wish them the best of luck. He's opponent Democratic State Tax Commissioner Kent Conrad gave a rousing speech to a crowd in Bismarck, but refused to take credit for the win until the early morning hours. You remember when we started this campaign we started out 31 points behind this qualifies as a miracle all of the organized interest group. We're on the other side. Almost every organized group was on the other side, but somehow we won in D2 national television networks picked Conrad shortly after the polls closed in Fargo at nine o'clock other winners included the president of the state retail Merchants Association art wheeler who led a successful fight against Sunday sales people North Dakota didn't believe the promises of these deeper bonnets. I didn't see any evidence of the new well, they didn't see the basis for the new job. So they really said, we've got a pretty good here in North Dakota. Let's keep it this way and initiated measure would have repealed much of the state's blue law which currently prohibits Sunday sales of goods merchandise and many services also going down to defeat a proposed Lottery attorney general Nick space led the fight against the measure claiming that only a few million dollars would be raised for State coffers space and others also objected to what they termed a cumbersome and ineffective enforcement mechanism to prevent fraud voting was very heavy in North Dakota coming close to setting an all-time record for an unprecedented. Until gear in Moorhead. I'm Dave somedll (00:49:59) 9 minutes before one o'clock and that just about wraps up our coverage of the election for the moment.
