(00:00:00) And good afternoon Bob Potter. Once again from our studios in st. Paul as we await the start of the press conference by Senator elect Rudy boschwitz over at the Minnesota Press Club at the Radisson Hotel in Minneapolis. We have some some late election returns to pass along to you know, startling surprises here, of course, but the vote count continues to come in and now about 97 to 98 percent of the precincts have been reported and in the six-year Senate race, it's Rudy boschwitz with 57% of the vote Wendell Anderson with 41% Sal car loan with 2% in the four-year Senate race, Dave durenberger 61% Bob Short 36 Paul, Helm 3% in the governor's race. Al quie 53% Rudy perpich 46% the American Party candidate Peterson with 1% for the Secretary of State grow. 2% brekkie 44% Jenkins of the American party 4% for the Auditors race Arne Carlson 52% Bob Matson, 47% the American Party candidate 1% for treasurer incumbent Jim Lord 51% I our Challenger Rick Teske 43% and the American Party candidate has six percent. So the performance by mr. Hanson will keep the American party alive as a major party and will appear automatically on the ballot in the Attorney. General's race Warren Spanish 56% Howard Knutson 40% the American Party candidate. Mr. Olson 4% for the Supreme Court Justice see Donald Peterson the incumbent 78% Jack Baker 22% in the other Supreme Court race, Rosalie wall 57% Bob Matson senior 43% that's with 96 percent of the precincts counted. In the state of North Dakota some information. We have not yet passed along Republicans in North Dakota are on the verge of establishing A veto-proof legislature. They have 164 seats in the House 18 in the Senate giving them a total of 35 in the Senate and they're leading in some other races in the North Dakota legislature. It appears that the dfl dollars and independent Republicans are dead even in the Minnesota House of Representatives with each holding 67 seats following the election the GOP nearly doubled its membership in the voting yesterday near final total show at least 31 incumbents defeated all of them DF ehlers the tie in the legislature creates a problem of how the caucuses will decide who will become Speaker of the House vote counters for broke. Both groups had today that the race has ended at 67 267. Of course, there will be some automatic recounts in a number of races where the margin is less than 100 votes. Further the legislature. We're tied at 67. That would be the first time that's happened in the state of Minnesota victims include 3 F 3 dfl committee chairman Bill Kelly of East Grand Forks chairman of the house tax committee done Samuelson of Brainerd who heads the Appropriations division of the health welfare and Corrections committee and Tony eckstine of New Ulm who chairs the Appropriations division on semistate activities Republicans will meet on Saturday DF Elders on November 18 to elect their floor leaders winners include representative Verve Anderson of International Falls who may hope to become speaker members of the Senate of course are Midway through their four-year terms under nut on the ballot yesterday. Do you Fellers hold a margin of 48 to 19 in the Minnesota state senate? Well, let's go through a list of some of the DF Elders who lost in the legislature yesterday. Some of these are by fairly narrow margins incidentally Dave Beauchamp of Moorhead Keith langseth of Glendon Doug st. Onge from Bemidji Arnold campy West st. Paul Howard Neeson of Mounds View. Surely Gunther of Raymond, Bob Jensen of Farmington, Dave Comiskey from Mankato dick Lemke from Lake City. Lyle a blind Bloomington du conseil st. Paul rust Stanton Arco Dwayne King Golden Valley West skoglund Minneapolis Vic Schultz of good you Tom manga. Nanoka Linda shied Brooklyn Park Maurice McClure White Bear Lake James White Farmington others defeated incumbents DF ehlers Ted sauce of New Prague Bruce Williamson, Bloomington ellsworth's Mo guard Madison or burn still Faribault. John Arlington of Golden Valley pipette professor of st. Louis Park John Brandel of Minneapolis while he Hanson from st. Paul and art Braun from Greenbush. Champ and langseth each lost by about 15 votes in unofficial returns. And as we noted a moment ago state law requires a recount whenever the margin is less than 100 in the legislative races Republicans won a Saint Paul seat vacated by the Suburban st. Paul seat rather did vacated by the defeated incumbent Mike George of Mata me die. The winner is Connie Levi of White Bear Lake over Ted birth Republicans. Also won the Northwestern Minnesota seat vacated by Jean winstram who ran for congress. The winner in that legislative district is Paul as knows who farms in the Wendell Minnesota area the dfl kept the Minneapolis seat vacated by representative Arne Carlson who ran and won the state auditor contest that seed Was Won by Todd Otis, who is the son of a Minnesota state supreme court justice, so that's a look at some of the Some of the legislative races in the state of Minnesota. We met at some point yet today go through and read all 134 just so that you can find out how your particular race came out. If there's one that you are particularly interested in we have already heard today from some of the winners and losers in the election. We heard from Dave durenberger this morning, we heard from defeated dfl Senate candidate Bob short and we heard from governor. Elect Al quie. There has been no word yet from Governor Rudy perpich who is apparently staying up at a cabin that he and his family own near Hibbing. And in fact, there are some signs that we not may not hear anything from Rudy perpich for a couple of days yet. Dave durenberger will be going to Washington tonight and then by mid-morning tomorrow, he'll be at the secretary of the Senate's office and we'll fill out the forms so that he can be sworn in as senator. Muriel Humphrey is no longer the senator apparently and and by being sworn in a little early why Dave durenberger will pick up a bit of seniority which may be of some benefit to Minnesota interests. We have some other numbers here in in the Congressional races. Might as well run through these here while we have a minute in the first district congressional seat. The one that Al quie gave up to run for governor. The seat stays in the Republican hands Arlen hird all has picked up 57% of the vote to state. Senator Jerry sikorsky's 43% Of course, Jerry Sikorsky will be returning to the Minnesota state senate in the second congressional district. It stays in Republican hands Tom Hagedorn the incumbent piling up a healthy 70 percent to 30 percent victory over. Mr. Considine in the second district in the Third District again, the Republican incumbent bill frenzel with 65. Percent of the vote to 35% for Freeman Mike Freeman the Democrat in the fourth district stays in Democratic hands Bruce vento 58% Mr. Berg John Berg 42% in the fifth congressional district. Another open seat opened because of course Don Fraser was running for for Senate. He lost in the primary and Martin Sable the dfl her one in the fifth congressional district with 62% of the vote to Mike tills 38% in the sixth district. No changes there the dfl incumbent will return Rick Nolan 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent of the vote for Russ Boris in the seventh congressional district. This was a seat that people were looking at with some interest because the Republicans wanted in a special election last year after DF Elder Bob Berglund was appointed secretary of agriculture the state the seat stays in the Republican column parlance tanglin piling up a 54 to 46 percent. Three over Jean winstram and Jean winstram of course will now be out of public service for at least a while because he had to give up his house seat in order to run for the Congress and in the 8th congressional district James Oberstar handily defeated his American party Challenger by 87 percent to 13 percent. So there we have some of the late election returns from around the area and all of these with anywhere from all about 91 percent of the votes counted to as much as 98% five more women were elected to the Minnesota house yesterday bringing the total of women in the Minnesota house to 15 now representative Linda shied from Brooklyn Park a Democrat was the only female incumbent to be unseated 10 of the women elected yesterday rdf ehlers an increase of one from the last session while five are independent Republicans representative Mary Forsythe from Edina. Only female member of the GOP caucus in the last session was unopposed for another term as you know, if you were listening to our election coverage last night. Mrs. Forsythe was one of our guests analysts the for new GOP women members are Marnie. Look Nick Faribault Kathy Blatz of Bloomington Sally Olson St. Louis Park and Connie Levi of White Bear Lake. And now let's go to the Minnesota Press Club at the hotel Rex. (00:10:08) Thank you. Bob, Woody. Perfect is Jeff enter The Press Room here where they Press Club where a little over a year ago. He first announced his candidacy for the Senate and he's coming very quickly. It didn't stop to speak to one of the supporters yet when I to the mics because he is running a few minutes behind. So that's my first like to start off by thanking the Press had a long campaign many of you have traveled with me many of you have spent a good deal of time with me, and I've tried to have a campaign with there's been a great deal of access to the Press. I expect to continue To run the office of the United States senator from Minnesota in the same way of having an open Office of having an office accessible not only to the Press but also as I'll discuss in a moment to the people of Minnesota, I'd like to say a word about the my competitor Wendy turned out to be absolutely tremendous competitor and opponent. We had a very very long lead that he narrowed down to almost nothing and some of the polls that we saw cause us to catch our Breath Away several times particularly right after the primary, so I extend to him and his family my best wishes and I trust that they will be well in the coming months. What am I going to do between now and the period of going back to Washington DC but going to us-backed going to Washington DC this this Friday. I'm going to go back on the road. I'm going to go back on the road. Yes to thank the people of Minnesota and also for the purpose of starting the business of opening up listening posts around Minnesota. I want the US Senate to be accessible to the citizens of Minnesota. And in that for that purpose, I'm going to establish listening posts around Minnesota where people can call somebody locally. They don't have to write letter some people don't like to write letters to a u.s. Senator. Some people don't have the funds to make a long-distance phone call so that they can have a local contact a local access to the United States Senate. I will Implement that between now and the first of the year throughout the state hopefully setting them all up but between now and the first of the year also we've Of the large number of committees particularly agriculture environment education that we will be reconvening strengthening strengthening a large number of committees and that will be done also between nouns and the first of the year so that we will be in a position to continue those committees and continue the people who gave us so much input during the course of the campaign. I have said very consistently throughout the campaign that the committee assignments that I'm going to seek or two and I understand that that I've already begun the process of doing that of I understand that I will be on three Committees subcommittees, of course in addition to that but the two that I am most desirous of being on or Agriculture and finance with a stress on budgets in the case of Finance agriculture because I believe agriculture to be the base of our economy here in the state and finance and budget because I want to achieve the goals that I If I'm sent the US Senate to achieve I should be on the budget committee. Also today were doing something that that we think is important for Minnesota. I recognize that we're sending letters today to all Congressman the newly elected governor, my friend Dave durenberger in addition so that we will convene those people in the very near future and we haven't yet set a date the process of event is very quick here and recognizing the very complex interrelationship between the state and the federal government. We want to set up this meeting to discuss how we can best forward Minnesota's legislative priorities with respect to the federal government. The interrelationship is complex. I'm going to get a great deal of help in that regard from Al quie. I think the state is lucky to have a governor who has the kind of background that he does federally and I want to help begin the the business of air Pragmatic business of getting more federal funds back to Minnesota so that as much as goes down there comes back and that will help all of the taxpayers of Minnesota and certainly help lessen the burden of Minnesota taxes. Also, I'm going to work hard on strengthening Minnesota's position in the Congress so that these kind of things can be achieved because there is a complex interrelationships between the Senate and the Senate and House of Representatives and the state of Minnesota and in order to maximize that I think we have to work as a group so I will take the the lead and getting that group together and will do so very promptly with letters going out today. I assume you don't intend to take off the suit before January. Oh, I will take it's unclear to me exactly when I will take office. I understood understand that there is some question of when my when Wendy's term ends and when mines begins and until the lawyers are clarify all that I'll have plenty to do well. But it's a victory is very sweet. And I feel very fresh and ready to go didn't have much sleep. But I tell you that it was a long hard campaign. I worked hard at it. My family worked hard at it and my staff and the volunteers that we built up now we have to build on that organization. So we established throughout Minnesota those listening posts so that we established throughout Minnesota, the contacts of people will be able to have with the US Senate. That's my objective for these two months. To what do you attribute your paraben-free overwhelming victory over Dave guest any number of things I guess certainly the some of the personal aspects of it. I think for most though is the understanding that people have of their pocketbook the idea that in the 50s and 60s people made progress when they got a raise, you know, they did better things for themselves and their families. Yes, they wouldn't the higher tax brackets, but they still made advancements now where they combination of high inflation plus being booted into really high tax brackets people not only aren't making progress surrett regressing and because they have that feeling that and because they want to make progress again. I think that they are looking for representation that Slow the growth of government that I've been talking about. I was helped by the appointment issue and I was helped by the attendance record. Yes. I was you know, that that's really a matter of supposition. I don't know how much and I do know that they were proud that there. You know the Press always likes to say what was the one thing that did this it was? No one thing as you know, there were a combination of circumstances and I like to think it was all me. I recognize it's not all me. I recognize that people vote for people and people vote against people and that other people are very moved by specific issues and other people are very moved by by a series of issues and so forth. I suppose the attitude of being desirous of a change also help. I think also the the understanding that people of Minnesota have had their Progressive that the two-party system really works that two parties are better than having dominance by one party that one party over dominance by one party whichever party it is will probably lead to a power. Use and people were looking for greater balance. I suppose some special issues Karen took part in the Duluth and the Iron Range. I understand that I carried easily two and a half to one on a couple of days ago. Somebody stopped out Queen said that they were merely there were four of them. They'd already cast their votes for all three Republicans at the top of the ticket and I thought boy we've done better and Ely this year than we did in 1974 already. So so it it I think in Ely and in an in the northern reaches of the state, it was a matter of trust also that one cannot move back and forth on issues and expect to maintain the the trust of the constituency. Larger staff here in Minnesota Karen. I really have not worked that out. I really haven't done. I must say that the I have not given that a great deal of consideration. I the the principal aspect of my Minnesota representation staff wise will will be this idea of having the listening posts and how that works how much Administration that needs how many of those were going to set up all determined to some extent what the answer to your question will be Okay, I want to again I look around I see many people who have traveled with me in the Press. I want to tell you that I feel that I've been fairly treated by the press in this campaign some of the most stimulating moments that I've had have been a fling with the questions that you've asked me and I thank you for the coverage that that you've given me and I intend again that they were going to have an open Senate that the open senate seat that you can come to and get access to and I think that that characterizes me and I think that also is one of the elements of why I won. Thank you very much. Senator-elect Rudy boschwitz speaking from the Minnesota Press Club at the Radisson (00:21:42) Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis that that press conference was of course broadcast live on these stations. We should remind you that our election coverage is made possible with the financial assistance of the st. Paul Fire & Marine insurance company.
