ALAN SEARLE: The Alliance says that Fraser's announcement to amend the Burton-Vento Wilderness Bill came as no surprise to them, especially coming on the brink of the State DFL Convention. Alliance president Lenore Johnson says that despite overtures of compromise, Fraser's position has not changed.

LENORE JOHNSON: His new convention promise is significant for Northeastern Minnesota in one respect only. Mr Fraser has finally agreed that motorized recreation is compatible, viable use of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. This latest move has stripped away the confusing philosophical argument that total wilderness advocates have used to portray us as local buffoons, who can't realize that our lifestyles must be sacrificed for the greater national good.

ALAN SEARLE: The Alliance has planned a rally at this weekend's DFL State Convention to show support for its multiple use BWCA management position. Johnson continued with her statement, saying it is important for Alliance supporters to demonstrate at the convention. She also says the group hopes to meet with Vice President Mondale. In Duluth, this is Alan Searle.
