Hubert H. Humphrey says he's giving Mondale his support in a national race. He thinks Mondale should run in the primary whether Ted Kennedy runs or not, saying we need good competition. Humphrey adds there's no better way to get known or to grow and know the country other than traveling around and seeing it.
Humphrey says he has friends who will try to help Mondale.
SPEAKER: No, sir. I'm giving this to Mondale, my support. Let me just say a word about my friend Mondale. I think that he ought to run, I've encouraged him to do so, and I think he ought to run in the primaries whether Teddy runs or not.
And the reason is we need good competition. And not only that, there's no better way to get known, and no better way to grow, and to get to know the country than to travel around and see it. And I have a lot of friends in this country. Most of those friends are going to have a little note. And I'm try to be of help.
