September 25, 1997 - Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton is urging the city's residents to show tolerance, respect, and civility during the current mayoral race. At a joint appearance with her challenger Barbara Carlson yesterday, Sayles Belton said it would be wrong to use an altercation that occurred after a candidate debate this week as evidence of a racially divided city. Carlson says there is racial division in Minneapolis. She says it needs to be discussed more openly. Minnesota Public Radio's William Wilcoxen reports.
September 10, 1997 - St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman and his DFL-endorsed challenger, State Senator Sandy Pappas, are moving into the next phase of the mayor's race today. Pappas and Coleman easily defeated five other candidates in yesterday's primary. Minnesota Public Radio's William Wilcoxen reports.
August 28, 1997 - The legislative task force considering state funding of a new Twin Cities baseball stadium heard testimony yesterday about several possible ways to pay for such a stadium. June 18, 1997 - The National Hockey League plans to return to the Twin Cities in the year 2000. The NHL’s expansion committee has recommended the league put a new team in St. Paul that year. The recommendation is expected to be approved next week. Many state and city officials are celebrating the NHL's decision as a boon for the region. Minnesota Public Radio's William Wilcoxen reports.
May 30, 1997 - Leaders of St. Paul's Democratic-Farmer-Labor party will endorse a candidate for mayor at their city convention tomorrow. St. Paul's incumbent mayor, Norm Coleman, was elected as a DFLer four years ago but since then has switched his allegiance to the Republican party. DFL convention delegates will select either State Senator Sandy Pappas or City Council member Bobbi Megard to challenge Coleman. Minnesota Public Radio's William Wilcoxen reports.
April 30, 1997 - The Minnesota Timberwolves got a taste of the national basketball association playoffs this year, but failed to earn a post-season victory. Last night's five-point loss to the Houston Rockets ended the Timberwolves season. Houston won the first-round playoff series three games to none. But the Timberwolves say they're proud of their performance this year and look forward to next season. Minnesota Public Radio's William Wilcoxen reports.
