March 12, 1998 - MINNESOTA'S LARGEST HEALTH MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATIONS - HEALTH PARTNERS AND MEDICA - HAVE ANNOUNCED THEY ARE SUING THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY IN AN EFFORT TO RECOVER MONEY SPENT TREATING SMOKING-RELATED ILLNESSES. THE NEW LAWSUIT IS INDEPENDENT OF THE CASE NOW BEING HEARD IN SAINT PAUL, BUT CONTAINS THE SAME CONSUMER FRAUD ALLEGATIONS RAISED BY THE STATE OF MINNESOTA AND BLUE CROSS/BLUE SHIELD. March 3, 1998 - St. Paul introduced its coordinator of gun violence prevention today. Police officer Ed Lemon will fill the new position, which the city council created to oversee various efforts to reduce gun violence. Minnesota Public Radio's William Wilcoxen has more.
February 11, 1998 - When personal computers began infiltrating private homes, some soothsayers predicted one result would be the decline of public libraries. It hasn't happened, at least not in the Twin Cities area where libraries are booming: they are serving more patrons, buying more materials, renovating buildings, and exploring new ways to pay for it all. Peter Pearson, who directs the advocacy group "Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library," remembers the dark days of the 1980's when city budget cuts hit the library system hard.

October 2, 1997 - The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed Kevin Garnett to a contract extension. The deal reached last night ends the possibility of Garnett leaving Minnesota and joining another basketball team through the free agent market after the upcoming season.
