Paula Shroeder reports: Relationship between factfinder Arnold Zack and Allen Zack, spokesman for international union uncovered by Austin Herald newspaper; article says the two are related. Union upset, claims conspiracy against the union because of Arnold Zack's influence over the talks. Arnold says he doesn?t know Allen. Talks continue. Arnold Zack: he?s not here as a mediator, it?s up to the parties involved, too broad to bridge, I hope not. Union leaders have postponted tonight?s rank and file meeting until tomorrow night.
January 20, 1986 - Local authorities in Austin have requested the governor to call out National Guard. Perpich says he will honor the request. The Guard will assist but not take over. Paul Tschida, Public Safety Commissioner, comments.
January 20, 1986 - MPR Journal’s Gary Eichten gets multiple reports on the status of Hormel strike situation in Austin. Striking meatpackers have amassed at gates of Hormel plant in order to disrupt. The company and city have requested the National Guard.
November 11, 1985 - Tomie DePaola, children's book author and illustrator; and Al Greenfield, reading specialist with the Minnesota Department of Education, discuss reading and literacy. October 30, 1985 - Steve Peacenik, former governmental crisis manager, discusses hostage situations and soviet state psychological tactics. Pieczenik was one of the federal government's principal crisis managers during the Ford and Carter administrations. He was involved in the negotiations that led up to the release of more than 500 hostages, including those who were held after the takeover of the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran. He also assisted in the reorganization of the state department's office to combat terrorism and helped plan the Camp David summit conference. Pieczenik is currently a consultant to the Rand Corporation, recently completed a study on Soviet political behavior and decision-making, and has written a book titled, "The Mind Palace."
September 30, 1985 - Evelina Chao, an American violinist of Chinese descent and member of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, talks about writing her novel Gates of Grace, which tells the story of the emigrate Chinese experience in America.
January 28, 1985 - On this Midday call-in program, a discussion with Jim Nichols, Minnesota's Agriculture Commissioner about the impact of farm crisis. Nichol's office has been a very busy one lately coordinating efforts of farmers and legislators to ease the farm debt crisis. Farmers have been organizing in 1985 to a greater degree than at any time since the Great Depression.
