April 14, 1998 - There's increasing concern about the future of St Peters mainstreet businesses as the city continues to clean up from last month's tornado. Preliminary estimates put damage to downtown businesses at millions of dollars. As Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports, some shops will have to relocate, while others will work to repair the damage and reopen. At first glance inside Nutter Clothing only a few things seem out of the ordinary. There are no clothing racks in the front and the carpet is water stained. Scott Dobie is the fourth owner of this men's clothing shop that opened in 1922. He says they dumped their entire stock because of the tornado's havoc. 39:16 Our windows were blown out. And the membrane on the roof was peeled back. And when it rained and snowed you can see it leaked all over the floor. Also the flying glass, the splinters of glass. April 7, 1998 - When the tornado smashed through St Peter a week ago Sunday, it tore down seventy percent of the city's electrical system, leaving residents in the dark and cold. National Guard Troops quickly arrived to patrol the darkened city. Many of the guardsmen have returned home, but crews continue to restore power and other utilties to the city's residents. Minnesota Public Radio's LYnette Nyman reports.
April 6, 1998 - Gustavus Adolphus College alumni and students spent the weekend cleaning up the destruction from last week's tornado. The tornado damaged many of the college's buildings and has forced an extension of the college's spring break. April 1, 1998 - Today officials from the Minnesota Historical Society will visit Saint Peter to survey tornado damage to the city's historic buildings. Hundreds of homes business and civic buildings were badly damaged Sunday night. Many others were destroyed. Some of those buildings were part of Saint Peter's early history, a town once chosen as the state capital. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
