PAUL for Tuesday m.e.] In a poll, released today, State Attorney General Skip Humphrey is the favored DFL Gubernatorial candidate by most DFL voters expecting to vote in the this months' primary. There are a couple of surprises that emerge from the numbers---DFL endorsed candidate Mike Freeman has slipped to THIRD...and Department Store heir Mark Dayton--once considered a dark horse--has emerged as a competitor. Yet, here in Minnesota, family farmers are said to be facing a crisis because of low crop prices and a series of natural disasters. It's an issue that's now become part of the governror's race. Even though a BOUNTY is expected there's little optimism among some farmers because of low commodity prices. June 11, 1998 - (Saint Paul) The state will no longer invest new pension money in tobacco and may divest itself of tobacco holdings ALL TOGETHER. The state board of investment passed the resolution on a 4-1 vote. . Minnesota Public Radio's Karen-Louise Boothe reports: Secretary of State Joan Growe rejected notions that the proposal was fueled more by politics than sound investment advice. She said that in light of the state's seven Billion dollar settlement with tobacco companies in the recent lawsuit, and a pending national tobacco settlement...tobacco stocks are too risky: Bite:4260 Governor Carlson voted against a similar resolution in September of 1996.
June 9, 1998 - St. Paul Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman edged out State Attorney General Skip Humphrey in a straw poll of Minnesota AFL-CIO members. June 8, 1998 - Saint Paul: 1992 was dubbed the "Year of the Woman" in national politics, with more women winning congressional seats than ever before. But when the 103rd Congress convened, women only made up ELEVEN percent of the House and SEVEN percent of the Senate. THIS election year pundits say it's the "Year of the Woman" in Minnesota politics. Women dominate the slate of DFL endorsed Candidates for statewide office following this weekend's state party convention in St. Cloud.
