March 10, 2008 - MPR’s Tom Crann interviews Mary Hu, high school poetry champion of the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest held at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Segment also includes clip of Hu performing a Thomas Hardy poem. The students recited poetry of old -- by Longfellow, Poe, Kipling and Browning -- as well as new, like Maya Angelou, Billy Collins and Sharon Olds. After three rounds, Morris Area High School student Mary Hu emerged as this year's winner.
December 7, 2007 - Pakou Hang was just days old when her family immigrated to the United States in 1976. They were part of the first wave of Hmong refugees to come to the United States. Now, the family has lived here far longer than they lived in Laos, and Pakou Hang fits in quite well in her community. She recently ran for a seat on the St. Paul City Council, but challenges still remain as an immigrant living in America, as demonstrated through this interview with her mother, Phoua Hang.
October 4, 2007 - An eight member panel is taking it's time in deciding whether to authorize state money to pay for a new I-35W bridge. The "Transportation Contingent Appropriations Group" is a group of senior lawmakers who have to decide whether the state should give $195 million to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Without the money, MnDOT Commissioner Carol Molnau says her department will have to delay other transportation projects in order to pay for the replacement bridge. Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Scheck helps sort out the delay.
