January 9, 2002 - With the state and US economies in decline, initial claims for jobless benefits in Minnesota rose last year by a dramatic 50 percent to nearly 312 thousand. But the end of the year saw indications the state's job market may be nearing bottom. Minnesota Public Radio's Bill Catlin reports.
January 2, 2002 - A new study suggests the worst of the recession may be behind us. The Mid-American Survey of Business Conditions in nine states, including Minnesota, shows purchase managers and business leaders are somewhat more upbeat about the region's economic outlook. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss helped conduct the survey. He says Minnesota has lost about 30-thousand jobs since the recession began last March, and is not doing AS WELL as the rest of the states surveyed....BUT, Goss says 2002 should bring fewer Minnesota job losses and the possibility of some gains.
December 18, 2001 - Minnesota's unemployment rate rose one tenth of a percent to 3-point-8 percent last month. The state's jobless rate remains well below the national level, and posted a smaller increase than the nation as a whole in November. But as Bill Catlin reports, layoffs are rising dramatically among the state's white collar workers, historically a group that has been less vulnerable to job cuts.
