But Chief William Finney says there was never any indication the three boys and three girls were in danger. Police arrested the 24-year-old mother after responding to her frantic call for help.

The reservation has more than 6,000 acres of wild rice beds within its boundaries.
September 7, 1998 - Readers of Douglas Wood's best-selling fable "Old Turtle" know the work of Duluth artist Cheng-Khee Chee, who brought the book's world to life with stunning watercolors. Since the book's publication in 1992, Chee has been wined and dined by the publishing industry, but has yet to accept any more commissions. Instead, these days he is working on his own, painting full time and teaching, as he always has, about the creative act. Minnesota Public Radio's Amy Radil has this report. When two students went on a shooting spree in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the Duluth publishing firm Pfieffer-Hamilton responded by sending copies of its book "Old Turtle" to the grief-stricken town. Cheng-Khee Chee created the book's memorable images of an abundant earth, a bustling human population, and the wise central character. Chee says he was impressed by the

But you'd never know it's been a stellar season judging by the tomatos being served at most restaurants. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports. September 7, 1998 - Negotiators for Northwest Airlines and the Pilots Union took Labor Day off today, after a weekend of federally mediated "exploratory talks" in Chicago yielded no progress. The Air Line Pilots Association decided to give some of its members a break from the walkout by holding a morale-building picnic at a Minneapolis park. As Minnesota Public Radio's Chris Roberts reports, some of the pilots and their families found themselves developing a new appreciation for Labor Day.
September 7, 1998 - The last day of the Minnesota State Fair is more than just one last opportunity to walk around in public eating fried cheese on sticks. Today is the culmination of the 4-H livestock competitions, when all the prize-winning animals go up for auction. The bids are well above market price, and the money is split between local charities and the 4-H kids who raised the winning animals.
