October 13, 1975 - Contract negotiations by Fargo teachers who want better pay and benefits have continued for eight months and have gone to a neutral impasse panel. The panel?s recommendations have been rejected by school board contending that levy increases would be needed. The union claims money is there by trimming in other less important areas. Gilbert Weehee (sp?) of the union says the board is trying to keep costs down by keeping salaries down. Bill Lipp (sp?) of the union explains that North Dakota law does not provide for binding arbitration, which allows negations to drag on while teachers aren?t allowed to strike.
October 15, 1975 - John Eccles, distinguished professor of physiology and biophysics at the State University of New York at Buffalo, speaking at Nobel Conference XI: The Future of Science held at Gustavus Adolphus College. Eccle’s speech was titled “The Brain-Mind Problem as a Frontier of Science.”
October 16, 1975 - Gifted children are those who " ... excel in any endeavor," not just those having high I.Q.s says Irving Sato, director of the National State Leadership Training Institute on the Gifted and Talented. This definition fits two percent of the student population. Because teachers haven't been trained in identifying gifted children, a committee (school psychologist, principal, and a teacher) evaluates the potentially gifted.
October 16, 1975 - Minnesota Federation of Teachers President Flo Rogie says teachers need to get a fairer share of the economic pie. Minnesota Education Association President Don Hill contends his union will concern itself with issues such as class size. Neither president expects the two unions will merge.
October 17, 1975 - Hazel Reinhardt, a consultant hired by the Minnesota Public Schools system, says Minnesota is currently dealing with decreased school enrollment. However, by 1985 as Baby Boomers have children, school enrollment will increase substantially. The school system needs to become more flexible to accommodate the fluctuations in student numbers.
October 17, 1975 - Traditionally, schools have dealt with law breaking students with their own enforcement and punishments. However, students are still subject to criminal law, even on school property, so says Minneapolis Federation of Teachers legal counsel Mr.(no first name) Peterson.
October 30, 1975 - Task force shows that University of Minnesota Duluth and University of Wisconsin Superior faculty and staff desire to maintain voluntary and informal cooperative relationship between the schools, opting out of federation or merger. Discussion of misconceptions of schools also included.
October 30, 1975 - Randall Tigue, of the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union, discusses unconstitutional nature of devising a scholarship, similar to the Williams Scholarship, at the University of Minnesota that would only be awarded to female student athletes.
October 30, 1975 - Stanley Kegler, vice president for Institutional Planning and Regulations at the University of Minnesota, discusses the issues of scholarships, and how funding a women's specific gift is difficult to put into place without a mechanism for funding.
