In this first hour of program, MPR’s Catherine Winter and Martin Kaste present various reports and interviews from residents, miners, mining companies, and politicians. Following reports, a panel discussion with Jim Gustafson, commissioner of IRRRB; Frederic “Fritz” Knaak, former I-R state representative in White Bear Lake; and Tom Rukavina, DFL state representative from Virginia, who talk about the future of area.

February 2, 1994 - Minneapolis Police Chief John Laux talks about Mayor Sayles Belton’s directive to police department in coming up with plan on addressing juvenile delinquents, enforcing a youth curfew, and reorganizing the Department of Juvenile Division.
March 7, 1994 - Judith Martin talks with MPR’s Gary Eichten about the growing prominence of graffiti in the Twin Cities. Martin sees a number of reasons behind it, including gang related and juvenile vandalism.
April 6, 1994 - Bill Dean, chair of Minnesotans for Light Rail Transit (LRT); and Lyle Wray, executive director of the Citizens League, express their views and answer listener questions about light rail transit in the Twin Cities.
August 2, 1994 - Midday presents a community policing MPR documentary entitled A New Kind of Cop, followed by a discussion and call-in with Lucy Gerold, director of Community Services Bureau for the Minneapolis Police Department. Gerold comments on local efforts on community policing and National Night Out.
August 2, 1994 - Midday’s Gary Eichten interviews St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman about the start of a city community initiative, called “SafeCity St. Paul.” Coleman details how communications, auditing, and creating an action agenda are being implemented in order to foster safer neighborhoods.
August 2, 1994 - Nils Hasselmo, president of the University of Minnesota, discusses the differences between Swedes and Norwegians. Hasselmo states that a once tense relationship is now a much more fun rivalry.
August 20, 1994 - MPR’s Chris Roberts talks with Money Magazine’s Marguerite Smith about their 1994 rankings of U.S. cities. Minneapolis came up #32 and Roberts tries to figure out “why so low?”
September 20, 1994 - Mainstreet Radio’s Rachel Reabe visits Tofte, Minnesota. While the natural shoreline of Lake Superior has not changed over time, the small town along the North Shore has. Reabe talks with local residents about the evolution of the town, the opportunities/concerns it has brought, and what the future holds for the community.
