October 29, 2002 - Many national dignitaries are expected to join nearly 20 thousand others at a public memorial service tonight (Tues) for Minnesota Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, daughter Marcia and three Wellstone campaign staffers. Those six people and two pilots died in a plane crash on Friday in northern Minnesota. A private service was held for Wellstone yesterday . Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Scheck reports...
October 29, 2002 - The National Transportation Safety Board is wrapping up the local phase of its investigation into the airplane crash that killed Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, their daughter, three staffers, and the plane's two pilots. The NTSB says it will probably be clear of the site by Thursday. Minnesota Public Radio's Stephanie Hemphill reports on what NTSB officials have shared so far.
October 29, 2002 - Folk singer Larry Long is a longtime friend of Senator Wellstone's who is preparing two songs for Wellstone memorial service. Long says he wrote the songs after traveling with Wellstone and his wife Sheila on a plane back from Farmfest in southwestern Minnestoa.
October 29, 2002 - Thousands of people are gathering at Williams arena on the University of Minnesota Campus for a memorial service for Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, their daughter Marcia and campaign staffers, Will McLaughlin, Tom Lapic and Mary McEvoy. Those six and two pilots died in a plane crash last Friday. The service is scheduled to begin at 6:30. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson is there and joins me now... Dan... Organizers were recommending people arrive early, it sounds like that's the case on the streets outside of Williams arena...are many people making their way into the building yet? -- We've been hearing that a number of national leaders are expected to attend tonight's service. October 30, 2002 - MPR’s Dan Olson presents a brief overview of Walter Mondale’s political career. Democrat Mondale will launch a campaign for the late Senator Paul Wellstone's seat. At 74 he's facing a six day campaign against a 53 year old rival, Republican Norm Coleman.
October 30, 2002 - Republican candidate Norm Coleman has re-launched his campaign for U.S. Senate. Coleman called off all campaign activities last Friday after Senator Paul Wellstone was killed in a plane crash. But today Coleman is flying around the state talking to voters in International Falls, Thief River Falls, and Owatonna. He spoke to supporters at the airport before leaving this morning.
October 30, 2002 - (NOTE: DATE REFERENCES IN BODY) The Minnesota gubernatorial race is reviving after going dormant in the wake of DFL Senator Paul Wellstone's death last week. The four major party candidates for governor say despite the turmoil in the Senate contest, they hope to keep the governor's race fresh in the minds of voters. Minnesota Public Radio's Michael Khoo reports.
October 30, 2002 - MPR’s Mark Zdechlik reports on the Minnesota DFL's Central Committee, as it convenes a special meeting this evening where hundreds of DFL activists are expected to name former Vice President Walter Mondale as the party's new US Senate candidate. The meeting will take place at the Historic State Theater in downtown Minneapolis.
October 30, 2002 - Governor Ventura says he was so upset by the partisan tone of last night's public eulogies for Paul Wellstone that he may appoint an independent to fill Wellstone's seat. Twenty-thousand people showed up at Williams Arena for a memorial service for Wellstone, his wife and daughter and three other campaign staffers, who died in a plane crash last Friday.
