April 2, 2009 - A group of community activists is requesting an independent investigation into the 2006 shooting death of Fong Lee by a Minneapolis police officer. Lee's family alleged this week that police planted a gun to suggest Lee was armed.

Rybak says city officials believe allegations of misconduct in the 2006 police shooting death of a 19-year-old man are false. Earlier this week, a lawyer representing the family of Fong Lee, filed affidavits which contradict police claims that Lee had a gun when Officer Jason Andersen shot and killed him. The documents also raise the possibility that the gun found next to Lee's body was planted by another police officer. Rybak urges people to be patient and let the legal process take its course.

The five officers filed the suit in 2007, claiming they were denied advancement and unfairly disciplined because of their race. City officials say the settlement doesn't admit to any wrongdoing by the police department.

The offer was approved by the Minneapolis city council this afternoon. In the complaint the officers alleged that they were unfairly disciplined and denied promotions because of their skin color. Attorney for the plaintiffs John Klassen says a lot of work still needs to be done, but the lawsuit has lead to improvements in race relations in the department.
