Voices of Minnesota, a long-running MPR series, highlights the many interesting voices that make up the people and history of Minnesota. It has appeared on Mid-Morning, MPR, Midday, and News Feature broadcasts in short form, and part of Midday hour programming in long form. Over the years, MPR’s Dan Olson, Gary Eichten, and numerous others, produced hundreds of fascinating interviews from the land of 10,000 Lakes.
January 6, 1999 - This January edition of Voices of Minnesota features MPR’s Dan Olson interviews with Dean Abrahamson, medical doctor and professor at University of Minnesota, and Eville Gorham, recently retired professor of ecology at University of Minnesota. Abrahamson discusses global warming, and its present and future impact on the Minnesota region. Gorham, who discovered the harmful influence of acid rain, discusses the past and current state of this pollution problem on the global environment.
February 17, 1999 - The February edition of our Voices of Minnesota series, featuring three pioneering Minnesota doctors: Dr. John Wild, who developed ultrasound for detecting breast cancer; Dr. Arne Anderson, a founder of the Minneapolis Children's Medical Center; and Dr. Betty Jerome, the first director of Teenage Medical Service in Minneapolis.
April 30, 1999 - The April edition of Voices of Minnesota celebrates the 100th birthday of jazz musician Duke Ellington. MPR's Dan Olson interviews Macalester College music professor Robert Leigh Morris and Terry Gross interviews Duke Ellington's son Mercer.
May 31, 1999 - The May edition of our "Voices of Minnesota" series, featuring novelist Jon Hassler, Regents Professor at St. John's University and Ian Barbour, the Carleton College professor who recently won the prestigious Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion.
July 8, 1999 - The July edition of our Voices of Minnesota Series featuring two Minnesota athletes - Greg Lemond, winner of the Tour de France bicycle race, and Nancy Mudge Cato, a woman who played in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League.
August 25, 1999 - Our August edition of Voices of Minnesota features Mississippi River biologist Calvin Fremling on the 75th anniversary of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife refuge.
September 24, 1999 - September edition of MPR's Voices of Minnesota series, featuring St. John's University football coach John Gagliardi and music arranger Red McLeod (he arranged the Minnesota Rouser as a student, arranged 1812 overture for U of M band for conductor Eugene Ormandy, wrote for Whoopee John polka band).
November 5, 1999 - Latest edition of the Voices of Minnesota series with retired University of Minnesota Journalism Professor Don Gillmor and retired Star Tribune political reporter Betty Wilson.
December 9, 1999 - Writer Bill Holm reflects on Christmas letters in this Voices of Minnesota holiday favorite. Originally broadcast in 1997.
