January 17, 2001 - Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone ended months of speculation by announcing he will run for a third term in 2002. Wellstone says the political climate has changed since he pledged to serve only two terms. Wellstone's decision was praised by Democrats and panned by Republicans.
January 18, 2001 - North Dakota and South Dakota are using government funded broadband networks to bring state of the art telecommunications access to all parts of the state. Officials there believe encouraging telecommunication companies to build an infrastructure to meet government needs will mean better access for business and everyone else. January 18, 2001 - The Norwegian foreign ministry is considering closing its Consulate in Minneapolis. The consulate opened in 1906, the year Norway gained independence from Sweden. About two dozen countries have honorary consuls in Minnesota, but only Norway and Canada operate full service consulates staffed with career diplomats. Consul General Ulf Christiansen says the consulate would be missed:
January 18, 2001 - Northwest Airlines is reporting rising profits and revenues in the fourth quarter and the full year -- despite labor problems, higher fuel costs and severe winter weather. But the coming year brings additional challenges, including the slowing economy AND the possibility it could get swept up in the trend toward airline mergers. ((tease cut)) Last year, John Freyer of Iowa City, Iowa came to the conlcusion he owned too many things. So he decided to sell a few items on eBay. Make that a lot of things: Freyer--an artist and University of Iowa graduate student--is trying to sell just about everything he owns. What started as an effort to reduce clutter has turned into a full-blown exercise in interactive multimedia art. Freyer's Web site --allmylifeforsale.com-- has links to what he's selling on eBay...and explains how he wants to track all the things he's sold, and maybe even take a road trip to visit his old stuff. He's unloading some everyday things like clothes and furniture...but nothing is sacred.

January 18, 2001 - In a hearing at the Minnesota capitol today (Thursday) members of the senate transportation committe sounded off on the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The committe took a straw vote to indicate their dissastisfaction with the Department's construction project for Crosstown Highway 62 in the southern metro area. Despite the committee's unhappiness over the project, MN-DOT officials say it will go forward. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
January 18, 2001 - Minnesota's Long-Term Care Task Force says the state should spend 113 million dollars to change the way the state cares for the elderly. The report proposes a shift away from the traditional nursing home structure to a system that includes homecare and assisted living facilities. The panel says the state has to make these changes before the baby boom population starts to retire and needs long-term care. Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Scheck reports...
