January 16, 2001 - MPR’s William Wilcoxen provides a brief profile of baseball star Kirby Puckett, who along with Dave Winfield, have been elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. Winfield is a St. Paul native whose 22-year major league career included a couple of seasons with the Minnesota Twins. But at the team offices in the Metrodome, the biggest celebration was for Puckett, who during his twelve years in Minnesota became one of the Twins' best and most popular players.

January 17, 2001 - As the sharply divided congress convenes, there's a great deal of debate about who will wield power in Washington D. C. With House Republicans holding a slim five vote majority, some pundits say the moderate Blue Dog Democrats will form a centrist power base. But Minnesota Seventh District Congressman Collin Peterson, a founding member of the Blue Dogs, says that's unlikely to happen. Minnesota Public Radios Dan Gunderson reports.
January 17, 2001 - The Minnesota Wild has a chance to even the score tonight in a rematch with the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Xcel Energy Center. On Monday, the Blue Jackets shut out the Wild, extending the team's losing streak to 3 games in a row. Despite recent problems, the Wild has a lot to celebrate halfway through its first season. The team has enjoyed a nine game unbeaten streak at home and goalie Manny Fernandez has had 3 shutouts. With Fernandez's help, the Wild has had brief moments where it looked more like a Stanley Cup contender than an expansion team. Fernandez comes to Minnesota from Canada, where he began playing hockey at age two. But he says an illness nearly forced him to scrap his budding career.

January 17, 2001 - The Star Tribune reports this morning that Senator Paul Wellstone is expected to announce today that he will seek a third term in the U-S Senate. When he was first elected in 1990 Wellstone pledged that he would serve only two terms. He was also considering a run for Governor in 2002. Chris Gilbert, Chair of the Political Science department at Gustavus Adolphus College says he's not surprised that Wellstone is planning to run for the Senate again.
January 17, 2001 - Northwest Airlines has announced a multi BILLION dollar aircraft order it says will modernize and simplify its fleet. The Minnesota-based airline, which flies the OLDEST FLEET of any of the majors, is buying 52 Boeing and Airbus planes many of which will replace Northwest DC-10's. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports....
January 17, 2001 - Officials from around the state broke ground today (Wednesday) on the eleven-and-a-half mile Hiawatha light rail line in Minneapolis. The ceremony marked the start of construction on the massive $675 million dollar transit project which begin carrying passengers in about three years. Minnesota Public Radio's Art Hughes reports.
