January 4, 2001 - Governor Ventura will give the State of the State speech at 3:00 this afternoon in the house chambers. The event is always a big one at the capitol. It's a rare time when both the House and Senate meet in a joint session. Now, Ventura didn't give a State of the State last year, so legislators say they'll be listening carefully to hear the governor's agenda for the 2001 session. Joining us is Cindy Brucato... she was chief of staff for former Governor Arne Carlson.
January 4, 2001 - Natural gas prices have hit a record high. The Minnesota Commerce Department says the cost of natural gas climbed 58-percent between December and January. The spike in prices has prompted many Minnesotans to seek help in paying their heating bills. Kim Rezek is with the Department of Economic Security's Energy Assistance Program. She says there's been a dramatic increase in the number of people applying for energy assistance.

January 8, 2001 - Twin Cities hospitals are increasingly diverting ambulances because their emergency rooms are too full. Last year metro area hospitals reportedly closed their doors about one-thousand times because of too many patients and not enough staff. Dave Feinwachs (FYN-wahks) is General Counsel for the Minnesota Hospital and Health Care Partnership which represents 142 hospitals in Minnesota. He says the practice involves patients who are not in life-threatening situations and who can be safely sent to a neighboring hospital ten to fifteen minutes away.

YOU'LL REMEMBER MINNESOTA BASED NORTHWEST HELD TALKS, LAST SUMMER, WITH AMERICAN ON SOME SORT OF A POSSIBLE MERGER, BUT THOSE TALKS DIDN'T GO ANYWHERE. SO, WHAT HAPPENS TO NORTHWEST NOW? JOEL DENNY IS AN AIRLINE ANALYST FOR PIPER JAFFREY. HE SAYS FROM A COMPETITIVE STANDPOINT, THE ACQUISITION WON'T HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON NORTHWEST. January 8, 2001 - Acclaimed local photographer Wing Young Huie is being recognized at the Ordway Center with a U.S. Bank Sally Ordway Irvine Award for his installation of "Lake Street USA." Huie spent four years taking photographs on and around Lake Street which were then blown up and displayed outdoors on storefronts, bus shelters and buildings. MPR’s Mary Stucky met with Huie as he began installing these enormous portraits, and filed this report.
