October 24, 2000 - University of Minnesota officials just met with reporters to talk about the NCAA sanctions. Minnesota Public Radio's Patty Marsicano joins us from the Twin Cities campus. -- Patty, what was the university's reaction to the sanctions? -- Coach Dan Munson was there, what did he have to say?
October 24, 2000 - The University of Minnesota is holding a news conference at this hour to respond to today's sanctions imposed by the NCAA for widespread academic fraud in the men's basketball program. The NCAA sanctions include four years of probation, reduced scholarships and fewer official visits by players. We'll have more on this story in the next half hour of All Things Considered. Collegiate sports scandals are nothing new, but increasingly colleges and universities are questioning whether the NCAA can solve the problem. Last week, University of Michigan President Emeritus James Dude-er-stadt testified before the Knight commission which is looking at ways to clean up collegiate sports. He says universities have lost control of basketball and football to the entertainment industry.
October 24, 2000 - Fog and thick clouds delayed efforts to fully put out the wildfire that's burned large sections of the Carlos Avery Wildlife area. Cool temperatures and some rain have helped dampen hot spots, that contine to smoulder. The fire, which started last Thursday and has burned more than 8500 acres. Lloyd Knudson, the Wildlife Area Manager, talks with MPR News.
October 25, 2000 - James Gibson, a soft-spoken software developer from Edina, walked in off the street to tell the leaders of the Independence Party he wanted to be their candidate for U.S. Senate. Party members weren't sure how to react to Gibson's request. Now, more than a year later, Governor Ventura's party's hopes of keeping major-party status depend on Gibson's candidacy. And Gibson has crafted a full-fledged campaign on a shoestring budget to take on two opponents with much more money: Republican incumbent Rod Grams and DFL department store heir Mark Dayton. Minnesota Public Radio's Amy Radil has this profile of James Gibson.
October 25, 2000 - In his new book "Singing My Him Song" Malachy McCourt, brother of Frank of "Angela's Ashes" fame, tells more of the wild Irish immigrant story he began in his first memoir "A Monk Swimming". It's also the story of him coming to terms with his alcohol abuse and how he came to work with his brother on the hit show "A Couple of Blaguards". Malachy McCourt says as he looked for the reasons he drank, he focused on his anger at his abusive father.
October 25, 2000 - A major new study of the internet's impact on society shows that 2/3 of Americans have access to online technology. They use the internet extensively, but it does not effect how they live their lives socially. They are worried about internet privacy, though.
October 25, 2000 - If you can't name the two countries involved in "The XYZ Affair," you might not be ready for Knowledge Bowl. Throughout the school year, hundreds of kids across Minnesota, and thousands more across the country, put their learning on the line at Knowledge Bowl meets. Kids from seventh grade to 12th grade compete, facing questions that range from history and geography to math and poetry. Later today Junior Varsity teams from northern Minnesota will gather in the town of Mountain Iron for the final stage of a big round-robin tournament. Minnesota Public Radio's Chris Julin watched the second round of the tournament last week and has this report.
October 25, 2000 - Governor Ventura met with Mexico's President-elect Vicente Fox this morning. Fox won the presidency this July, ousting the political party that had controlled the government for 71 years. Ventura and Fox spoke of strengthening ties between Mexico and Minnesota. They also talked about their similiarities as politicians. Minnesota Public Radio's Andrew Haeg is in Mexico City with this report. What topics did Ventura and Fox discuss? October 25, 2000 - Minnesotans got their first look last night at plans for a high speed rail system that could cut travel times in much of the Midwest. Supporters of a high speed rail system provided information about trains that would travel up to 110 miles an hour between nine states. They would be organized in a hub and spoke system centered around Chicago. Matt Hollinshead, with Minnesotans for Sustainable Transportation, talks with MPR News.
October 25, 2000 - The University of Minnesota says it accepts the sanctions imposed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association for the men's basketball academic fraud scandal. The NCAA is requiring the school to surrender some scholarships, curb recruiting, erase several post-season appearances from the record books, and put the school's athletics on probation for four years. Minnesota Public Radio's Patty Marsicano reports.
