But farming is an unattractive career choice in Minnesota compared to many more urban occupations. But a program sponsored by the Land Stewardship Project is making small strides bringing new farmers to the state. October 9, 2000 - State officials today announced creation of a unified plan for managing water in Minnesota. They say "Minnesota Watermarks" represents the first time local, state, and federal agencies and some citizens' groups have collaborated to create a common vision for water quality and use. Minnesota Public Radio's Lynette Nyman reports.
October 10, 2000 - Minneapolis Schools Superintendent Carol Johnson will recommend to the school board tonight that the district stop sponsering or promoting Boy Scout Troops. That decision is a reaction to the U-S Supreme Court ruling which allows the Boy Scouts to ban gay troop leaders. Superintendent Johnson says the policies of the Boy Scouts and the school district are now in direct conflict. Minneapolis Schools Superintendent Carol Johnson.
October 10, 2000 - Fourth District Congressman Bruce Vento died today of complications from a rare form of lung cancer. The 12-term Democrat learned he had the disease in February, and addressed his House colleagues in March, after announcing he was retiring. Here is an excerpt from that speech.
October 10, 2000 - A Mayo Clinic study has found that women with a family history of breast cancer are more likely to get the disease if they took oral contraceptives. For years, researchers have expressed concern that the hormones found in birth control pills may heighten women's risk of getting the disease. But there was little hard evidence making the link between family history and the "pill." Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Scheck reports...
October 10, 2000 - DFL Congressman Bruce Veto died after announcing on Feb 2nd 2000 his diagnosis with lung cancer and decision not to seek reelection. Vento held Minnesota's fourth Congressional district House of Representatives seat for nearly 24 years. He's remembered as a champion of working people, the environment and the homeless. Minnesota Public Radio's Mark Zdechlik reports.
