September 7, 2000 - St.Paul officials are counting on young singles and empty nesters to buy hundreds of new downtown housing units being built near the city's lowertown area. Ground was broken today for the fifty million dollar condominium and apartment development. Located on what's called downtown's 'north quadrant', the development displaces hundreds of surface parking lot spaces. Public subsidies make up a quarter of the project's financing. Officials say downtown housing can't be built without taxpayer help. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan OIson reports.
September 7, 2000 - Hunters near Ely have killed a black bear researchers called "Whiteheart." The bear gained fame last winter when a video camera broadcast pictures from her den. Although the kill was legal, the man who shot the bear says he's sorry, and he's sworn off any more bear hunting. But field biologists say MOST bears with radio collars get bagged by hunters ... and they say that's part of the plan. Minnesota Public Radio's Chris Julin reports from Duluth.

September 7, 2000 - Thirty two year old Kevin Shores leaves Moorhead Saturday morning in his wheelchair, headed for the state capitol in St. Paul. He's making the 250 mile trek at four miles an hour, to draw attention to the so called Gulf War Syndrome. An estimated 200- thousand Gulf War vets are afflicted by a variety of mysterious debilitating maladies. Minnesota Public Radios Dan Gunderson reports.
September 7, 2000 - Today in New York, Governor Jesse Ventura begins a 9-city tour promoting his new book entitled "Do I Stand Alone?," in which he talks about "going to the mat," as he puts it, against politicians and media types. A year ago Ventura was caught up in a storm of criticism from politicians and watchdog groups over his money-making activities outside the governor's office. But as he begins his latest book tour, Ventura's determination to shake up the system, and pursue his own projects, seems to have prevailed. Minnesota Public Radio's Amy Radil reports.
September 8, 2000 - Saint Paul will throw a party tomorrow (Sat) for its newest park, which is also one of its oldest parks. A fourteen million dollar face lift of Harriet Island Regional Park has revived a century old gathering place on the Mississippi River. The park renovation - combined with this summer's news that new housing and jobs are coming to the river flats - is creating a new momentum for Saint Paul's West Side. September 8, 2000 - Gunhus=GUN us An affadavit released by the Anoka County attorneys office shows what may be a link between Republican Senator Rod Grams' reelection campain and some e-mails critical of one of his D-F-L rivals, Michael Ciresi. The affadavit says the e-mail account used to send the e-mails was used in the home of one of Grams' campaign advisors, Christine Gunhus. Last weekend Grams emphatically denied that his campaign was involved in creating the e-mails, in which the sender posed as a D-F-L activist. Minnesota Public Radio's Amy Radil reports.
September 8, 2000 - An estimated seven million dollars has already been spent on ads in Minnesota's D-F-L Senate primary race, and the candidates are increasing their presence in the final days of the campaign. The three big spenders - Mike Ciresi, Mark Dayton and Rebecca Yanisch - are running new television spots touting their various endorsements, but the ads of all three contain some misleading elements, according to an ad analyst.
