The McKnight Foundation named Lou Bellamy its 2006 Distinguished Artist. The honor recognizes individuals who've made significant contributions to the state's cultural life.
Bellamy is the founder of St. Paul's Penumbra Theatre Company and is also a theatre faculty member at the University of Minnesota. Since its inception in 1976, Penumbra has become one of the most acclaimed African American theaters in the country. Bellamy says he's been able to earn a living and gain recognition without having to leave home.
