["HAPPY BIRTHDAY" PLAYING] Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, Bob Dylan.
STEPHANIE HEMPHILL: About a 100 people got together for cake and music at Duluth's old Armory. This is where a teenaged Bob Dylan was inspired by a concert with Buddy Holly in 1959, shortly before Holly's death in a plane crash. A nonprofit group has rescued the Armory from the wrecking ball, and plans to turn it into a cultural center. One of the organizers is Caroline [? Sundqvist. ?]
SPEAKER 2: At this point, the plan is to have the building mothballed for approximately two years, which would allow time to put in place the financial structure, raise the money and get everything together to be able to then start construction in about two years.
STEPHANIE HEMPHILL: The Armory was the venue for concerts and other civic events for many years, it was also where men trained for military service. Bob Watts is a combat veteran of World War II, he was remembering a different Bob today.
SPEAKER 3: My buddy, he was a taxi cab driver. He gave Bob Hope, and Doris Day a ride to the Armory, the night they performed here. He had a horse inside and he dropped a little bit. And so, Bob Hope out there with a dustpan and a broom, I can remember just like yesterday, cleaning up the mess from the horse. That was just part of his act.
STEPHANIE HEMPHILL: The City of Duluth turned over the deed to the old Armory, to the arts group at today's party. Stephanie Hemphill, Minnesota Public Radio, Duluth.
