University of Minnesota Women's Athletics Director Chris Voelz says a coaching change won't end the success the women's basketball team experienced this year. Coach Brenda Oldfield announced today she's leaving the team she helped turn around after one season to become the new coach at the University of Maryland. Voelz and several Gopher players say they're disappointed but will carry on without Oldfield. Minnesota Public Radio's Tim Pugmire was at a U of M news conference this afternoon. Tim, was Chris Voelz suprised to lose Brenda Oldfield after just one season. Voelz says there's always a lot of talk this time of year about coaching vacancies and candidates. She says the Golden Gophers success this season made Brenda Oldfield a better candidate. Oldfield inherited a team that went 8 and 20 last season under former coach Cheryl Littlejohn. This year, the Golden Gophers had a 22 and 8 record, tied for second place in the Big Ten and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Oldfield was Big Ten Coach of the Year and won National Coach of the Year honors from the Associated Press.
