Plans to build an Islamic worship center have been put on hold because some residents in Haverhill (Have-ur-hill) Township, on Rochester's northeastern border are now opposed. Minnesota Public Radio's Rob Schmitz reports. Residents of Haverhill Township forced their board to postpone a vote on whether to let plans for a new Mosque, proceed. Board members had previously granted the Rochester Islamic Center a conditional use permit, but, according to Township Board supervisor Tony Ebert, a group of neighbors filed a petition demanding information on the center's potential for environmental impact. Ebert thinks the petition was nothing more than a stall tactic for people who are reluctanct to accept a new faith into their community.
