Columbia Heights resident David Byrne was arraigned today by an Anoka County judge on attempted first degree murder and seven assualt charges. He's charged with wounding three police officers Tuesday afternoon in a running gun battle that spanned three blocks and lasted half an hour. Two of the wounded officers have been treated and released. One is still in the hospital in satisfactory condition. Thirty five years ago, Bryne was convicted of killing his estranged wife and her friend. He served just over six years on a charge of second degree murder. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports. Investiagtors say Columbia Heights police officer Michael McGee was walking home from work Tuesday afternoon when his neighbor David Byrne confronted him then shot him in the back. McGee ran to a neighbor's house and called the police. Over the next thirty minutes, investigators say, Byrne fired a still undetermined number of shots at police and into the front and back door of McGee's house as he shouted, "Come on out." Captain Loni Payne of the Anoka County Sheriff's office says investigators found more guns when they searched Byrne's house. audio . . . we did take in about nine long guns and forty five boxes of various ammunition, along with a note and clipping about officer McGee the defendant had in his possession.
