(00:00:02) Good afternoon, and welcome back to mid-day. I'm Mike Edgerly Gary eichten returns tomorrow. The presidential field is now set. Well almost any way. We know that George w-- Bush Al Gore Ralph Nader will be on the ballot, but we still don't know who will represent the Reform Party. Will it be former Republican party presidential candidate Pat Buchanan or former natural law Party candidate John hagelin when the Reform Party got together 10 days ago in Long Beach California to settle the issue the party instead split in half and ended up with dueling conventions. Some delegates endorsed Buchanan delegates with links to former Party founder Ross Perot endorsed hagelin still to be resolved in the courts is which faction will end up with Reform Party name Reform Party ballot access and the reform parties 12 million dollars in federal campaign money this month. We've been featuring highlights from the political parties national conventions. And today we're going to hear from the two Reform Party presidential. Candidates first Buchanan then hagelin to begin Pat Buchanan accepting his factions Reform Party presidential (00:01:07) nomination. Thank you. Let's have a (00:01:31) let's have a nice welcome for the lady who's going to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton Shelly (00:01:35) Buchanan. Thank you. (00:01:52) Thank you and I proudly Accept your nomination for president of the United States (00:01:58) and plant you a fight. We can be proud of all of our Lives, you know, (00:02:15) you know for years friends I have heard in many of you have heard that taunt in our various parties. Don't worry about those people. They have nowhere else to go. Well, guess what? We've got somewhere else to go We've Got A Home of (00:02:34) Our Own. And as far (00:02:48) and as for those poor maltreated homeless conservatives up there at the big Bush family reunions in Philadelphia. We say to those poor pathetic Souls come on over fellas. There's rocks of room and reform (00:03:14) did any of you (00:03:15) get any of you watch that convention up there those who did how did you stand the excitement? (00:03:26) You (00:03:26) know one Republican one Republican Governor said, I know it's boring but he explained it this way. He said quote we used. Have red meat conventions, but they frighten people away. So we're all vegetarians now. (00:03:45) I want to tell that Governor (00:03:47) welcome to the last red meat convention in (00:03:49) America. That makes a (00:04:05) First let me say that that convention did focus on on positive things and there is much that is right with America much we can be very very thankful for I know that firsthand, you know in science technology and Medicine we Americans Excel is no other people before us in history. I was at Cape Canaveral in 1969 when Apollo 11 lifted off on its way to the Moon I was there. I am alive today. Thank the Lord and thanks to a heart valve mechanical heart valve that didn't even exist when I was in high school. I was at Ronald Reagan side in that critical Summit it Reykjavik when that great and good man refused to give up a missile defense of his (00:05:02) country. And our world (00:05:08) and our world is safer and Freer than the world I grew up in and most of you grow up in because of that great and good man, Ronald Reagan in America today in America today is indeed as was as dominant as was Rome in her day, but beneath our surface Prosperity, there's a deep anxiety among our people of foreboding. That something was ignored in Philadelphia. And that's something revolves around several questions quo. Vadis America. Where are we going America, how are we using? All this wealth and power and freedom. We now possess. Are we still God's country? What about the Forgotten Americans of Philadelphia and I mean first and foremost? The Unborn children another million of humor (00:06:13) there's this year (00:06:23) another million of whom will perish this year without seeing the light of day for these Lost Innocence there was barely a word of compassion from the party of compassionate conservatism. Well Republicans may be running away from life, but as long as there is life left in me, I will never run away from The Unborn because their cause is my cause and their cause is God's (00:06:50) cause Let me speak (00:07:10) now. Let me speak of some of those other forgotten Americans at Philadelphia 18 months ago. It was that Shelly and I began our campaign. Like flying up to Pittsburgh and driving through the Mon Valley where my mom grew up over to a Tiny Town in West Virginia cold. We (00:07:30) archon folks (00:07:34) from there here tonight in that Tiny Town, which is totally dependent upon Weirton steel which used to have 23,000 workers and now is down to four thousand in that Tiny Town where it makes some of the most efficiently made Steel in the world that town was under threat and that steel mill was under threat because of Steel being dumped into the United States illegally under cost by Russia and Brazil and Indonesia and Japan and Korea because those regimes bankrupt as they were they needed cash. To pay back the debts of the International Banks that were squeezing them. And mr. Clinton went along with that those families. And those workers in that Mill and we are too I went in there pitch black and his fellow cams away of this furnace came away from this furnace, and he pulled up his hat and he hugged me and he took off his watch. And he gave it to me. I said I can't take this watch. He says you take it. Thank God you're here. What has happened to our country when we walk away from people like this what has happened to our country just the other (00:09:02) day, you know in (00:09:09) one of the prouder Moments Of My Life The Independent steelworkers Union of Weirton endorsed our candidacy and working together. The steelworkers to Buchanan brigades the Reform Party. We've got us on the ballot in the Mountaineer state of West (00:09:25) Virginia now, let me (00:09:41) tonight. Lay out some of the other great issues where our new Reform Party stands apart from both Beltway parties. Last year at the end of Bill Clinton's Balkan War. I was given a small party by some serve Americans who wanted to say thanks to my having opposed that war and they told me of a woman who wanted to be there that night, but she wasn't coming out. Because both her parents had been killed in the bombing of Belgrade. Mr. Bush says his only objection to mr. Clinton's war was that it was not fought ferociously enough. I wonder if he could send that message to that lady that serve woman who lost her mom and dad now. Why did we do this? Why did we bomb this little country for 78 days when it had never threatened or attacked the United States of America? Yes. There was an ugly gorilla war going on in Kosovo where troops of the KLA gorillas were engaging in terrorist attack on Serb soldiers and serve police and they were ugly and nasty reprisals. But in one year there had only been two thousand dead in this entire war and is Wars go around the world. That wasn't even in the top 10 or the top 20. Hip look at the disaster. We wrought after Clinton launched his war thousands died. The albanians were driven out of their homes a million of them. Now a quarter million serbs have been ethnically cleansed in KL a counter-terror. Serbia is smashed Kosovo destroyed. Russia has been driven into the arms of China and American troops are tied down in a Balkan Peninsula. It has nothing to do with a vital national interests of the United States. My friends (00:12:03) my friends. I count myself. (00:12:06) I count myself a patriot. I love this country. But what in God's name are we doing? Milosevic is a thug and a tyrant but that is not his country. We destroyed that is their country and the Serb people have always been friends of the United States. Saddam Hussein is another Wicked Tyrant who has launched aggressive war and murdered his own people, but who has killed more innocent Iraqis Saddam Hussein or un sanctions when Madeline Albright was told on a television (00:12:46) show. (00:12:50) Madeleine Albright was told on a television show that a un study had found that perhaps five hundred thousand Iraqi children may have died because of our 10 years of sanctions. She responded quote. We believe it was worth (00:13:08) it. Worth it. (00:13:13) When did the greatest Republic on Earth start Waging War on children after mr. Clinton launched one of his drive-by shootings with cruise missiles to get the latest Scandal off the front pages. This is Albright said Miss Albright Justified it this way quote if we have to use force it is because we are America. We are the indispensable Nation We Stand Tall. We see farther into the future talk about the arrogance of power George. The third could not have said it better (00:13:50) friends friends. I am ashamed I (00:13:56) am ashamed to say it but we have begun to behave they have in Washington like the haughty British Empire our founding fathers rose up against and throughout of the this country this (00:14:08) then (00:14:13) This then is what our party our cause in our campaign are all about. We are Americans who say with our founding fathers to hell with Empire. We want our country (00:14:28) back (00:14:54) today both of these Beltway parties conspire. to kill our beloved Republic both colluded to create that monstrosity the WTO both voted 18 billion dollars for the IMF to make the world safe for Goldman Sachs (00:15:16) last year (00:15:18) last year a un International war crimes tribunal was established with the power and authority and authority to arrest American soldiers and prosecute them without our permission. this year un Secretary General Kofi Annan He thundered that you Americans do not pay your fair share of foreign aid (00:15:47) and (00:15:48) last last fall Walter Cronkite the most trusted man in (00:15:52) America. (00:15:57) He said Americans must have the courage to surrender their sovereignty to a world (00:16:04) government. (00:16:13) That is both of those parties. Let me tell you what this party believes (00:16:17) in. We believe in (00:16:20) Independence forever. (00:16:25) We will We Will and we will reclaim every (00:16:37) lost ounce of Can sovereignty I will lead the United States out of the WTO out of the eye out of the (00:16:46) IMF and I will tell mr. Kofi (00:16:51) Annan up at the UN this your un lessor has run out and you will be moving out of the United States and if you are not (00:17:02) gone. And and sir (00:17:28) and mr. Iraq, mr. Kofi, I want to be polite but if you are not going by years in we will send a few thousand US Marines to help you (00:17:38) pack friends. (00:17:57) I am called as you know many names. Isolationist is one of the sweeter ones, but the truth is we reformers are not isolationist. We do not want to isolate America from the world. We Americans come from all countries and continents and we want to travel with and trade with all homelands. We come from all countries of the world. We want commercial cultural and diplomatic contact with every nation on Earth. However, we will no longer squander the blood of our soldiers fighting other countries Wars or the wealth of our people paying other countries bills, (00:19:01) Nicole. (00:19:04) The cold war that was the cause of my whole life. Because of my whole life and the time I went into journalism until 1989 at great day when the Wall came down that cold war is bless the Lord over and I believe it is time to bring American troops home and when I step out and when I step out on that inaugural stand to take the oath of office as president. When my right hand goes up their new world order comes (00:19:39) down. (00:20:04) Now Bill Clinton, he understands this issue of sovereignty Al Gore. He understands it. W he doesn't understand (00:20:16) it, (00:20:19) but don't worry W is being home schooled in foreign policy by Miss Condoleezza Rice, (00:20:28) but we are the only (00:20:29) party in America with a chance to win that is sworn to fight World Government abroad and big government in Washington DC. (00:20:50) Now, let's have a look. (00:20:53) Let's have a look at the record of this show called Republican Congress that has the nerve to call itself conservative in the last two years. Not one Federal agency has been abolished not one Federal program ended federal spending is rising at the fastest rate today as it has since Tip O'Neill with speaker the house and I knew Tip O'Neill and he was a spender. That's how fast it's rising both. These parties are so steeped in pork. They are so steeped in pork back in Washington DC that they have to be checked every six months for trichinosis (00:21:43) here a couple items. (00:21:45) Here are a couple of items from our near true two trillion dollar federal budget proposed by Republicans and signed by mr. It five hundred thousand dollars for a study of swine Waste Management. 1.75 million to study the handling and distribution of the manure. What is going on up there? Do these guys have enough sense to cross the street apparently not because this is the truth this year Congress voted 1 million for a study in Utah on how to cross the street friends. It is time to pick up the pitchforks and go down and clean out the pig (00:22:35) pen. If you want real reform then both reform, (00:23:04) you know back in 1991. I challenge the president named Bush. Because he broke his pledge not to raise taxes. The bush to Bush said I had to do it to balance the budget three years later. Mr. Clinton raised taxes, and he said I had to do it to balance the budget. Well now the budget is balanced and we have a surplus and it is time to repeal the Clinton tax hike and the Bush tax (00:23:33) hike (00:23:41) and to give that Surplus back to the American people because it does not belong to the politicians. It belongs to the people and we will give it back and I will tell you how here is how we will eliminate all death taxes and end the federal government's role as Grave robber of the American family we will The marriage penalty and cut income taxes for all Americans (00:24:14) and and we will impose a (00:24:19) ten percent tariff on All Imports and use the money to end taxes on small (00:24:26) businesses in America. (00:24:42) And when we reformers get there, we will chop down that IRS. So badly the whole thing the whole thing will fit into the building being vacated by the National Endowment for the (00:24:57) Arts. As far (00:25:16) as for communist China unlike those two parties of appeasement on Capitol Hill. We will not accept one-sided trade deals with Beijing where we by 40% of their exports and they buy one percent of hours and I will tell them fellas call in that Chinese Ambassador and say your friend. Mr. Clinton is gone now, sir. (00:25:46) And I don't want your (00:25:47) money. I understand you're all tapped out. I don't want your money for any campaigns, but I'm going to tell you something if you don't stop persecuting Christians, (00:26:00) and if you (00:26:00) don't stop threatening our friends on Taiwan, and if you don't stop pointing missiles at our country, you fellows have sold your last pair of Chopsticks at any mall in the United States of (00:26:13) America. Yes. Yes. (00:26:33) Yes. We are Politically Incorrect here. They let me speak now about one of the great issues. Of our time civil rights, you know, I go back a long way. I knew the old leaders of the Civil Rights Movement Roy Wilkins. Dr. King. Dr. Abernathy. I knew it when I was a very young man. I didn't always agree with them and I didn't always agree with their tactics, but I respected them, but today's agenda has nothing to do with civil rights and everything to do with special privilege now to me no discrimination means no discrimination not against anyone on the basis of race color creed Heritage, but no preferential treatment for anyone based on race color creed or (00:27:27) Heritage. And so (00:27:32) and so when we get to the White House, all discrimination ends no more racial profiling and no more racial preferences men and women And women in the Buchanan Administration will be Advanced by the standards. We use to choose our American Olympic team Merit character ability and excellence and you know when I say those words Merit character excellence and ability. Somehow is Olaf Foster comes to (00:28:04) mind Zola. (00:28:31) Is Allah as your dad would say is your dad would say you go girl? (00:28:40) Yes, sir. (00:28:42) You know up at Philadelphia. I was at the beach listening to the convention with my wife Shelly and I heard Senator McCain and he got up and he began to denounce those who want to reform our immigration laws, and he said and I quote walls are for cowards. Let me tell the senator story about a woman who lives in his own home state of Arizona. Her name is Theresa Marie. Senator she's 82 years old. She has arthritis and she lives in Douglas right on that border. When Shelly and I went up to her Ranch last winter. She was confined to her tiny home and around her home is a chain-link fence it on top of the chain link fence. Our roles of coiled razor wire as you see on prisons around the country every door and window of that little home had bars on it. Mrs. Murray's to pet dogs. Were killed by Thugs who threw meat over the fence with cut glass in it. This lady sleeps with a gun on her bed table at 82 because she's been burglarized 30 times Senator McCain go down to Douglas and tell Theresa Marie that fences are for cowards. This is an American woman. Theresa Marie is an American woman living out her life in a maximum-security prison in her own home. In her own country because of the real cowardice the cowardice of politicians who refuse to do their Duty and defend the borders of the United (00:30:30) States. I read a lot of newspapers (00:30:47) every day. I read about American soldiers defending Kosovo and the borders of Kuwait and the borders of Korea, but you know, I don't live in Kosovo Korea Korea or Kuwait and neither does Theresa Marie. We live in the United States? And when I become president, we will bring home all of those troops from Kosovo Kuwait in Korea and I will put them on the border of Arizona, Texas and (00:31:16) California and we will start putting America first, but but bring them home bring them home. Bring them. Bring them home. They're getting the message out there, (00:31:54) but friends we will never Or the constitutional republic unless we replace the commissars of the US Supreme Court those unelected judges appointed for Life who Answer to No One and who have begun to erect a Judicial dictatorship in America in New (00:32:15) Hampshire. (00:32:18) And New Hampshire one judge and a panel of Judges have created chaos in the public schools by overthrowing a financing system that had existed for years in Arizona one federal judge told the people they cannot make English the official language for State business in California. Impala for Nia Proposition 187 simply to cut off welfare benefits to people who break the law and break into our country won by a landslide but was overturned by one federal (00:32:53) judge last year (00:32:58) last year the state of Ohio was told to sandblast its motto With God all things are possible off state buildings because those why because those are the words of Jesus Christ (00:33:13) and his words apparently (00:33:15) do not belong on state buildings in Bill Clinton's America now, mr. Bush holds up his hands and says, I have no litmus test for the Supreme Court. Well, mr. Bush I do. (00:33:42) And when Supreme (00:33:43) Court and when Supreme Court vacancies open up in a Buchanan White House only constitutionalists who respect the right to life of all Americans and our religious Heritage will be nominated and no liberal judicial activists need apply. (00:34:12) Let me turn (00:34:14) let me turn now to the signature issue of the Bush campaign for president education. Mr. Bush is so enthusiastic about education. He sometimes gets carried away. For example, he told a baffled audience in Florence South Carolina, and I quote him directly quote rarely has the question asked is our children learning is our children learning. Well, our children is certainly not learning in Texas (00:34:53) governor, like (00:35:03) like mr. Garr. Mr. Bush believes the solution to the education crisis lies and empowering and expanding the US Department of Education, but we believe differently. We believe the Department of Education is the (00:35:17) problem and at the solution (00:35:22) and the solution lies in getting God in the Ten Commandments and discipline back into the public schools and the federal bureaucrats and federal judges out of the public schools (00:35:34) and shutting down the Department of Education. I'll say it again. (00:35:49) I'll say it again if you want real reform vote before You know, the Democratic party will never will never reform education because it is held hostage by government unions, which will dominate its convention. Republicans will never shut down that IMF because if they did all those lobbyists on K Street, it pat Choate writes about would cut off the Republicans room board tuition gas money and beer money. Neither Beltway party. Neither Beltway party's going to drain this political swamp because to them it's not a swamp. It's a protected Wetland. It's their natural habitat. They swim in it they feed in it and there is happy. There is Brer Rabbit in the Briar Patch (00:36:49) only (00:36:54) only the One party can reform politics in America because nobody's got a hook in us (00:37:05) and I give you I give you my (00:37:08) word we will Outlaw the glorified bribery called soft money and put term limits on every member of Congress and every federal (00:37:17) judge, you know, (00:37:27) if eight years it ain't years was long enough for George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Ronald Reagan. It may even be long enough for Teddy Kennedy and Barney Frank (00:37:48) before I close (00:37:49) tonight. I want to say a word to Ross Perot. Frost is the founding father of this party (00:38:00) without you Ross (00:38:02) Ross without you it would be no Reform Party you and I Ross you and I stood together in the battles of NAFTA Gatt and against the WTO. Now we have on this nomination fair and square almost almost all of your folks have joined our folks Ross. Let's go out and do battle together (00:38:39) Ross Ross Perot Ross Perot created this party, (00:38:45) and we're giving it a chance to grow and live. We've earned that chance Ross come on out and give us a (00:38:52) hand friends (00:38:58) friends. Let me tell you about the man who stands before you tonight. Forty years ago. I was trying to figure out what to do with my life, which had taken some pretty interesting detours at that time. I read a line by Justice Holmes. A man the Justice had written must share the action and the passion of his time at Peril of being judged not to have lived. And so I have and it has been a wonderful life for me. You know, I was a few feet away from dr. Martin Luther King when he delivered his I Have a Dream speech in Lincoln Memorial. I was there with my brother. I was in Philadelphia Mississippi before they pulled the bodies of those civil rights workers out of that Earthen Dam in 1964. I was in the Conrad Hilton Hotel in 1968 at the Democratic Convention with a Democratic party came apart in the streets of Chicago. I was there I was with Nixon in China. I was with Reagan at Reykjavik. I've had the honor of serving in three white houses. I've seen presidents in their finest hours. And seeing them also in their Darkest Hours Nixon through 18 months of Watergate Reagan through Iran-Contra. I have something to give to my country and that brings me to recall a moment in my life. It was 1964 after I had driven up from Philadelphia, Mississippi. I drove up to Austin in New York to see my oldest brother Bill. Who was at the maryknoll seminary in Ossining in the prime of his youth he had joined this Mission order to be sent abroad as a missionary. To teach his faith to people in far off lands, and I asked him why he did it. He told me. God has been good to our family and we have to give him something back. My brother Bill is gone now. But his words haunt me still. God has been good to our family. And we have to give something back and that is why we are here to create something new and good and alive and get something back to this wonderful country that has been so good to us. This road to Long Beach has been long and hard harder at times and I thought it would be in this room are men and women and young people who worked from dawn to dusk and Beyond and malls gas stations and Country Stores in Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma West Virginia to get a million signatures to get us on the ballot. It is a tribute to your dedication and loyalty that we have not yet. Missed a single one and this fall I hope and pray. We'll make it all but why are you doing this people? Ask me? Why are you doing this path? I'll tell you because there has to be one party. That is not sold. It sold for soft money. There has to be one party that will stand up for our sovereignty and stand up for our workers and stand by those folks being sacrificed on the altar of the global economy. There has to be one party that will defend America's history and Heritage Heroes (00:43:01) against the Visigoths and vandals or multiculturalism. There has to be one (00:43:06) party. Willing to drive the money changers out of the temple is of our civilization. What are we fighting (00:43:14) for? (00:43:16) What are we fighting for to save our country from being sold down the river into some Godless New World Order and hand down to our children and their children a nation as good and as great as the one our parents gave us forever independent and forever free. That is what this Gideon's Army is fighting for and we will fight on and on and on and gone until God himself calls us home. (00:43:48) Thank you and God bless you. Pat Buchanan accepting his factions Reform Party presidential nomination at one of the reform (00:43:59) parties national conventions earlier this month a Long Beach California. Well Pat Buchanan was being nominated by his faction natural law party leader. John hagelin was accepting the nomination of the Reform Party faction link to Party founder Ross Perot to conclude this hour of. Midday. We're going to hear part of what mr. Hagelin had to say to his supporters this campaign promises to be the most powerful third party campaign since Abraham Lincoln because it brings the United strength of the Reform Party behind it. It brings with it the support of Americans independent parties across this country who are joining this Coalition the independence party the natural law party. It is a (00:44:40) powerful powerful movement. (00:44:56) and as a foundation to moving forward from Long Beach and conducting a powerful and unified campaign now is a process of healing and of rebuilding we must now put aside small differences that divide us and embrace the grand ideas that unite us and taking (00:45:22) back (00:45:35) at an FCC hearing last year. I was referred to by Rupert Murdoch. All third parties and third-party voters were referred to as Fringe voters. Well, there are a hundred and fifteen million of us. Where does that put the Republican and Democratic (00:45:54) voters tens of millions of (00:46:04) disenfranchised voters are sitting at the sidelines 89 percent of eligible students. Do not vote. They have no investment in the Republican or Democratic party's these parties do not speak for them. We speak for the American people, (00:46:28) but now it is our challenge (00:46:31) to give these hundred and fifteen million frustrated non-voters a reason to vote (00:46:37) now is the time. Time we must all reach out (00:46:48) with a message of inclusivity a message of Tolerance a broad based platform that the vast majority of Americans support. We are offering ourselves to the American people and urging the viewers and voters of across this country and non-voters alike to recognize this party as your party. We're not slick. We don't have the scripted conventions and the appearance of surface Unity, perhaps that the Republican Democrat pageants will show but we have our a cross section a broad cross-section of the American people. This is a populist party. This is the People's Party take ownership of it breathe your strength your life into it and grow it into America's next major (00:47:39) party. In the past (00:47:47) 25 years since the legalization of bribery. (00:47:52) Our government has become more (00:47:54) responsive to the special interests that bankroll their campaigns than to We the People they were elected to represent. (00:48:04) But I will tell you this (00:48:06) critical reform for which Americans are crying which is brazenly neglected election after election by the duopoly and power this critical campaign Finance reform will never come from within the system. It'll take a third-party Insurrection a peaceful Revolution at The (00:48:23) Ballot Box, which we will have in November now the Press have been asking (00:48:46) Have you few days been the death of the Reform Party? (00:48:52) There are there are firm party has been under a (00:48:56) slow and painful Death By A Thousand Cuts over the past six months with the systematic assault on its Democratic procedures. This is a birth (00:49:05) of the Reform Party The Rebirth the rebuilding and you're doing it. Now (00:49:21) Pat Buchanan takes away ballot access in a number of states. What are we do? We'll build it rebuild it. I have built third political parties and independent movements for eight years. What we need to do can be done in weeks. We can rebound we can (00:49:37) rebuild we can be the voice of America. And the Press are asking (00:49:57) what now? Can you possibly (00:50:00) accomplish? What can you possibly accomplish? There are no limits (00:50:08) on what we can accomplish. Nobody has voted yet. (00:50:22) Ross Perot got (00:50:24) 20 million votes at a time when Third Party politics was a fledgling concept Ross Perot got 20 million votes and he withdrew in his race and it was a solid platform but a narrow platform and we're offering America today is six years of work by the Reform Party to build a more comprehensive blueprint for government in the next (00:50:47) millennium (00:50:58) and this campaign this third-party Uprising is coming at a time where the thirst for political reform is. So intense that George W is trying to sell himself as the reform (00:51:10) candidate.
