MPR’s Mark Heistad interviews Brian Walter, spokesperson of Our Fair Carousel, who shares the news of a last-minute purchase of the longtime carousel at the Minnesota State Fair. It was up for auction and going to be pieced out.
In 1988, Minnesotans were stunned to learn the beloved carousel, which had been at State Fairgrounds for 75 years, had been sold to a private party. The Our Fair Carousel organization was able to save the carousel. It found a new home in downtown St. Paul’s Town Square for several years, before finding a permanent home at St. Paul’s Como Park.
