So I thought I'd give you tennis bus a chance to find out some more about it from the head coach of the Gophers Jerry noise who's with his team in East Lansing Michigan at the Michigan State Invitational Jerry. Thanks for sharing yourself away from the tennis to spend some time with us here on portfolio a couple Fellas on the court right now. They're in the midst of matches fortunately doing pretty good control of the match. So I don't feel quite as bad about being on the phone and not out there. Jerry if you will tell us exactly what this tournament is that we're going to have here in the Twin Cities next week.National Collegiate tennis circuit that occurs each year and this is one of four parts of that service. The combination of the circuit is obviously the NCAA National Championships with the current Mets in the phone. We start off with the Volvo All-American which is in October in the end of October beginning of November in Los Angeles at UCLA the second leg and really the kickoff to the beginning of the winter college tennis season is a tournament that I'll be in the Twin Cities is coming week, which is the Rolex National indoor singles and doubles for men and women then many of the players will go to Lewisville two weeks from now for the national indoor Team Championships, and that they should be in mid-February in the final rap. Pepper National circuits will be the ncaa's at the end of me. So basically everybody who's anybody in college tennis will be playing their next week.Dennis will be here to play in this tournament and I might mention there's something unique about this year's tournament besides the fact this is the 10th Annual National indoor Championship this year. We're having two small College portion of the national indoor championship in Minneapolis as well as the division 1 play the world of work. Is this on Wednesday and then Thursday morning the 3rd and 4th of February next week at the 98th Street Racquet Club the top eight men in the top 8 women's singles player in small college and small College be defined from NCAA division 2 and 3 NAIA and Junior College. Most players will come to the Twin Cities and compete for the national small College indoor championships.Where's the wedding woman in the winning man in that tournament then feed right into the division 1 playoffs. We have a little bit of the David and Goliath is going on here as well because it's possible that you were college player for example could win the small college championship and go all the way through the division 1A ZZ Top player in college tennis for all levels and usually a course that doesn't occur because in any other sport, there's not a chance for the complete integration of the levels of a Division II play about how many players total be involved?Division 1 tournament, it's 32 single straw man. 32 single Trail women and then the devils are 16 doubles teams in both drawers in the small college for the Wednesday and Thursday to be a single man a single swimming at least players have been selected by plane and National or Regional rather qualifiers around the country this fall the US for tennis is put into equations roughly the same reasons as basketball, which most people be more familiar with and each of those regions has had a Regional Championship for men and women for the big one and I Regional championships for small College in those players will come to Minneapolis this week. And then where is the division 1 tournament?Start on Thursday morning and it will also be at the 98th Street Racquet Club beginning at 9 a.m. You get you get involved with the crosstown Racquet Club it on this tournament. Once we get to the semi-finals on Saturday next week and the finals on Sunday, then we'll go to the crosstown Racquet Club the new Racquet Club in town in Eden Prairie combination of all this that's where they'll be. Tournament in singles in the winning doubles team will get the number one ranking in the country for right now on the on the ranking pull in as well will be considered probably one of the favorite if not the favorite for the NCAA tournament this I might again mention is the very same field that will see you at the NC double a championship Twitter the spring best of the best men's tennis coach. Jerry noises are guests here on sportfolio this afternoon. I'm JG Preston you listening to ksjn 1330 and a phone number if you'd like to talk tennis with Gerry noise here today is to 276 thousand at 2276 thousand or phone number on sportfolio standing by in Golden Valley High might go ahead playing with a nun ad formats good? This sat tournament will be played in regular scoring do SAT scoring this year as an experiment. National championships up to the NCAA finals will be played with the conventional what we call the conventional do SAT scoring system with which most people are familiar with and how much does a course has been played with the noad scoring system for the past ten twelve years. And this is an experiment to see if we want to convert back to the traditional scoring system and it's an experiment that's worth something. I just had a quick point to make I think that and I had scoring system out for those of you out there who don't know about tennis that's where there's no way out or do essentially when it gets to 33 the next to make the size of this is done more to setback American tennis and anybody can imagine you can kids go through college. They play for years is just absolutely hurts their development that also they're going to the Pro ranks at age 22 and they find themselves in the US Open playing a sweeter a Czechoslovakian flare. We've been playing a five-set to format since he's about age 17 and they just suck on it. Just I can't I compete under these circumstances. It's really hurt the program. It's really said it back and you know, it's interesting to note Connors Mcenroe both quit to Collegiate tennis after their first year because they won the title and they said no reason to stay around and do that for me. I heard him really encouraged to hear that injury. I hope you do something to permanently change that this is one of the biggest factors that a setback college tennis and also I set back American pro tennis lately like I had him and I didn't know there was an issue in college tennis. You open my eyes a little bit their coaches in the country. However, there is a reaction is mixed if you'll remember Mikael pernfors who was our 2 time NCAA champion in graduated two years ago when it's directly for winning the NC double A's to the finals of the French Open defeating Boris Becker and others on his route, and he credited to know add scoring system for making it possible for him to do that because his number so much pressure packed in the sky. Assistant versus the traditional but I don't agree with that. I think it makes our players play more defensive because there's always pressure in each point and Ice I do think however what it has done for our players that go out and play regular scoring after they come out of college if we're like the pressure's off their back, but I agree. I think that he would be more consistent with the development of players throughout the game for him to go to regular story and that's what we'll see this weekend labor. The point that it is an important factor in antennas and often discussed antenna circles. The concern was just a very pragmatic one which was the length of matches and of course we start each day in traditionally most places in the country Outdoors until sunlights a problem and if they started 3 in the afternoon with the regular scoring system, they were fighting after years of Experiment with a sister is the mattress with lasting too long. So as result in the early seventies, they went to this shortened scoring format, which Detroit to match is a little bit but I think it really didn't help develop the players through college as much as the other system would appreciate it 30 minutes after 12 here on ksjn 1330 MJG Preston along with University of Minnesota men's tennis coach Jerry noise here on Sports. Bolio, Minnesota tennis fans all know David Wheaton very well David grew up in Minnesota for most of his Wonder Years, I guess see if he won. The State High School Championship is a freshman. He left the state then to concentrate on Tennyson and trained in the South and now this year has seized art in college as a freshman out of Stanford University in California David by anybody's account one of the top college players in the country, but I'm told he's going to miss this national championship tournament next weekend with an injury. Yes, unfortunately, I David probably of all the players in the country's the one big-name that'll be missing from the tournament this week because of an injury. He sustained while he was rollerblading when we can play tennis was rollerblading Street School is clogged and had an accident and try to stop himself and and unfortunately went through a window with his left hand. He's already in a player so we didn't hurt his play here. But he does use a two-handed backhand volley was casted he had the full recovery. However, the amount of time that the doctor wants him to take to heal that injury properly is I got to take longer than that this tournament. He won't be able to get into the Twin Cities or play again until late February probably will be able to come back in and make a run at the NCAA outdoor championship. What are the favorite in the describing the circuit earlier the Volvo tournament in the fall? David was a finalist in wow, and he's a he's still want just 18 years old. The Wimbledon Junior would be the sport of the two top International World Junior title to win that this this past fall and most experts would say he certainly one of the top World in that age group are phone number if you'd like to talk tennis with Gerry is 2 to 76,000 to 276 thousand cereal be with us for a little bit here. And then Edina native Ginger helgeson who is now one of the top college players in the country will be joining us a little bit to talk about the Rolex National indoor Intercollegiate tennis championship tournament coming up this weekend in the Twin Cities at the 98th Street Racquet Club in the crosstown Racquet Club. I think there's a perception among a lot of people especially getting involved in tennis at the junior levels become financially just impossible for a lot of people that it's become a sport for the the very wealthy and I guess it certainly can't help the image and either had to have a sponsorship by Rolex which is synonymous with extreme well, Sonic restaurant that you don't have Rolex, I think the people that have been arrested Tennessee certain Market, but I think that market is brought in the great deal. I know from personal experience essay more money to play tennis and it does to play hockey with she wants to do I know that those skates in those Stakes are pretty expensive to so I'm not sure that that's that's exactly accurate. Although it's just waiting for trade that way but I think that's the US Tennis Association just like looking for a minute has been real concerned as his neck was mentioned about the development of our youth and be able to compete in the top level in the pros. And in the midst of putting together a report that they hope will use those used as a springboard to developing better young players part of that. The report is the fact that they want to decrease the cost of tennis for entry-level player. So there's a number of Grassroots programs that are bitter beings. Administered right now or developed right now that will allow a youngster to feed into an Asic tennis and be able to get to the cost of the sport down to a lower level. Is just coming and getting access to the court time itself game been getting involved in one of the various instructional programs weather be in groups or individually. I think that becomes an expensive part of it later than Next Level. What happens is the players were the very best like weakness. We talked about stuff to travel nationally and internationally enough the National Association will help sponsor some of the expenses. What's the load after putting off the play The National level then the parents are the players are are settled with responsibility of paying those travel expenses. What are the things that the US Tennis Association our National Association has looked at is canceling national competition for players who are age 14 and under basic junior high school players and younger. And again, the reason for doing that is that they are concerned one reason is the amount of cost involved because now if a person is a good player he or she feels like in order to get us a leg up where to stay even with the best in the country. They must travel all these National Tournament. So I'd say if that comes to be with there's a good chance it will be for the best players would significantly reduce the cost for them to be able to to compete I can travel when you were there at a certain level and before they're probably instructional, It's Kind of a Funny dichotomy. I guess we went so much expense does coming in the opportunity to compete at the national level. I guess we from the edge of what 11 or 12 on up right now Jerry don't they start to pee? Naturally at that age now, but you can compete with other people of equal Talent from across the country. So that's kind of a positive 2. Often times don't let the games a lot of games to develop fully aware that they're very successful at the young age of being a back for getting every ball back. If they don't develop the aggressive game, maybe because he's afraid to ask what's the ranking of risk is the winning record not to lose even an early age. That's the thing that says everybody's concerned about him. That's for the contestant. One of the primary reasons to do away with his National level competition by the youngsters who are at the top of the rankings at that time. If I get to get out insurgents some of these top Kansas going to bring my game up and it's even more of an incentive for me to play the more but I think that's the most of us that if we stop for national competition, at least that would help me with the games and can develop a little bit more fully. Do you find that a lot of the top players at the age of 14 15 16 to they also wind up being the top college players later on or is there much of a correlation? Where are you? This is another good reason for that the young champions at the early ages often times Fade Out by the time they get to college and certainly to the pros. I can't remember the exact statistics from study was done and finding what the correlation was between our champions in the 12th and 14th and what they did in the pros and I don't believe you were more than one or two in the last 20 years and it done anything. So most of them had faded out with the girl kid. Is it a case that a lot of them actually lose interest in the game or are they just kids who may be physically reach their Peak a little earlier than other kids catch up and then passing by its very well. They have a very unique mental development. They're very mature most of them at least a new approach to the game. And I think they were good. I think that's true very much. So waiting for example was a good player in the nation is 12 and 14, but not the very top. When he was 15 years old in one into the 16 and under every two years a graduate to another age Division and 15. He was probably physically the most underdeveloped it is he had a tremendous drop off in his ranking in in his success and that you was a real Cruiser roof form that year. He was about five foot six or something like that next year. He was six foot one ever said he was one of the top. So now he was one of the major when he really made his jumping in national tennis talking about the tennis college and youth tennis with University of Minnesota Coach Jerry noise cearense portfolio this afternoon, I'm JG Preston for letting the ksjn 1330. I would be happy to answer your questions as well. Give us a call at 227-6002 to 76 thousand here on sportfolio High School. Football players or basketball players or baseball players in the country and one or two other sports even while they're gaining a national reputation for their their primaries for at least around here. It doesn't seem like the top tennis players around Minnesota are kids that I hear about is excelling another Sports. Is it because of the national nature of the game for the better players is it is your is your top High School tennis player less likely to protect another Sports than say a football or basketball player would be For example, you're going to have ginger on in a while and ginger obviously could have been a very good athlete and in any sport that you played in. She's a tremendous athlete but the fact that she chose tennis and wanted to play the highest level meant that she had to spend more time in the game and specialized a little bit more but there are those who can do both one of our top American Juniors in the country right now has a fella named Jonathan Stark whose name you don't know now that will in a few years and Jonathan's is playing basketball right now in his rackets on the sidelines locally. We've got a couple of players who are in their first year of the Toyota sports during the off-season there play in my trailer before me Diner is has been at the top of our local rankings and been nationally ranked for 3 or 4 years. Healy Diner hockey team does real fine job for them and then I damn the bedroom place for his school for Armstrong and I believe he's a starting garden tractor. I know he made all states. Two weeks ago that the reason to sports would you Jerry as a rule with the kid is the junior high or high school age? Even if he or she were particularly good at tennis, would you would you encourage that the young person to also develop another sport or two or do you think it's okay for them to just concentrate on tennis at a gas station so important in college, that's what makes college. Do you need part of of tennis of all tenses of the teenager having for lunch tennis players. It's the most exciting part of Tennessee is coming up getting this weed thing instead of the money thing is really important, but I think it's good to get away from the tennis a little bit too. I think you can overdo it and you get burned down and So I think at least until the age, you know where they're going into the 80 and unders maybe and if they really the top-level then they can look at it making that choice but if the younger age groups to play everything in him to get a well-rounded background in sports as well as her in school little bit about some of the people will be playing in the national indoor Championship coming up this week in the Twin Cities. I understand that both the John Mcenroe's brother and Chris Evert sister are going to play in this tournament between singles and doubles in the tournament. And by the way, he was the past 10 singles champion last year. So he's an awfully good player in his own right? And then the youngest sister Claire inside, I believe a sophomore at Stephen you in Texas and Chile playing the devil's event. He's an excellent player as well. And how about from your own gopher team Jerry if you got some competitors in the Nationals here. Chance to do well in the tournament and I believe care Huntingburg and South Dakota do expensive who's playing with his terrific for this weekend at this they can England need is in the quarterfinals right now will be praying are single spot. He's been playing of the one for his stuff so far this year and double stenciling can Anthony Cruz in Chicago who says they've been I never win doubles team will be playing in the tournament if I'm actually beat Pat Mcenroe in the last year the first one so maybe some of the top players in both the men's and women's division Nigerian where they're from Women's player is and Groesbeck and she's a senior from Texas and Q in the fall tournaments. The men's side that the number one player in college tennis is Scott Melville from University of Southern California and likewise who won the fall tournament. He can be tweeting in the finals and he'll be here another two seen the man sza from the same school as Ginger helgeson. You're a little while from Pepperdine is named Andrew Schneider and he's never the Canadian Junior Nationals Davis Cup team. Very good player to a lot of fun the Rolex National Intercollegiate Tennis Championships small college division begins Wednesday at the 98th Street Racquet Club, the open Division 1 operation starts the next day and then the semi-finals and finals of the crosstown Racquet Club in Eden Prairie on Saturday and Sunday. We will have ginger helgeson of Edina on in just a couple of minutes before I let you go. Alicia tell that won the doubles last year at this tournament Wiki Leach a week ago won the Australian Open doubles title Ricky rodenberg last year of missing you was the world's voted the world's rookie of the year in pro tennis this year. So if you're good idea that these these fellows really are going to be the future great and it will be the future great stuff. People talking about it and I sure like to see it's either woman's or an instrument to come back. We had the women's event and answering those years ago, and it would be great to see come back. That we were talking earlier Jerry about the national competition for players for from the ages of 12 on up. You was a college coach at what age do you start looking seriously at Players as potential future? category it was really one there 17 or so. Then you start to really seriously look at them. And I know last year David Wheaton was certainly a guy that you wanted to sign very badly. It was a close call any wind up going to Stanford. I suppose there must be another couple of kids of his caliber that you got a close eye on for this year where we do have three or four, but I'm not going to get my hopes up after like ask if not used to at least they know that they can find the warmer weather and better outdoor year-round tennis. I think you know that's the only can be a little bit of a fact that if you've got a program with a good reputation and good players on the team. She's got a good chance as anybody else. I think I think with David it had nothing to do with the with the weather. At least we being from this area but even coming back to it after being in in Florida, but the the case of some of the West Coast Schools particular you think you run into the Sensi the number of professional players who live in the area today is that they can practice with and I know that the fact that John Mcenroe land or Dare for David for him to practice with 21 in competition with a big factor, I'll let you go back to the washing the Gophers play at East Lansing there in that Spartan Invitational, but I want to thank you very much for your time and I hope you have a good time watching your players and everybody else at this National indoor tournament coming up. Play Slots and thank you for having me on JG take care of Minnesota men's tennis coach has been with us here on sportfolio and it just a couple of minutes. We'll be checking in with Edina native Ginger helgeson. Former State High School Champion now attends Pepperdine University in California. She's a senior at Pepperdine and she'll be part of the field for the Rolex National Intercollegiate. Indoor tennis championships beginning Wednesday at the 98th Street Racquet Club. Ksjn, 1330 program is portfolio in my name is Gigi Preston. Just after 12:30 coming up on 29 minutes before 1 and we'll be back with more portfolio in just a second. Hello, this is no Adams from Minnesota on good evening this week some jazz and blues and a bit of rock and roll Claudia Schmidt will be singing helped out by Howard Levy's harmonica playing also pianos Mister be at the stories of Don Davis all that and more on good evening Saturday live in the world theater in st. Paul. Good evening Eros tonight at 7 right here on ksjn 1330 Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Don't miss good evening tonight at 7. Weather forecast that's something I need to tell you about because it's actually going to get above freezing again today cuz of this forecast is greater than the way they wrote it fog gradually diminishing but remaining gloomy word for weather forecast in one person is Gloom is another person's pride and joy, you think it's gloomy out there. I sure it's not the greatest visibility and ever want to see a little foggy and Misty. I kinda like it myself and it is 20% chance of freezing drizzle or light snow for the rest of the day and it'll say about where it is right. Now. As far as the temperature is concerned right around the freezing Mark tonight cloudy 30% chance of lights. No possibly mixed with some freezing drizzle should be a lot of fun to drive on those will be in the middle twenties tonight at a windy out of the north to Northwest 10 to 20 miles an hour tomorrow is not going to be cloudy 30% chance of snow will be in the middle twenties, but the temperature will drop during the afternoon in the middle teens that are biting northwest wind at 15 to 25 miles an hour yuck sounds disgusting. Now what a great things about live radio is at your always assuming that your guests will make connections with you when you schedule them to in this case. I'm sure I'm making the correct assumption. I'm sure that Ginger helgeson the tennis star will give me a call any minute now. If she doesn't we'll do something else. That's a great thing about live radio 2 as you can do whatever you want to on JG Preston. The program is portfolio here on ksjn 1330 muscle catch up on what's going on the rest of the Sports World while we get ready to talk some more tennis hear the Gopher hockey team at a Wild win last night at Mariucci Arena. They fell behind for nothing against the last place team in the western Collegiate Hockey Association, Colorado College CC and won a grand total of three of its previous 27 League games, but Gophers came back and won last night 928 Dean Williamson scoring the winning goal in overtime for the Gophers. Mr. Williamson is played in three games in Minnesota, and he scored the winning goal in overtime in two of them. He is the son of former US Olympic hockey coach Marie Williamson Gophers in Colorado College again tonight at Mariucci Arena. The Gophers are now what are they now 22 and 6 in the WCHA. They leave by eight points over Wisconsin direct second in the country Badgers also won last night for 2/3 / North Dakota at Madison UMD be Northern Michigan last night at the Duluth Arena by a score. Set a three and Michigan Tech beat Denver in the WCHA last night 64 songs by the subject of college hockey st. Thomas be Bethel last night 6 to 3 times are now tied with Gustavus for first place in the miac and Bemidji State hockey. Coach. Bob Peters is approaching to Milestone at Bemidji State beat wisconsin-superior last night for the one at the midgie. And for Bob Peters. That was his 499 career coaching Victory hell of a chance to go for number 500 tonight in Bemidji again against Superior. Only five other college hockey coaches have ever won 500 career games. And before we leave the subject of hockey altogether the North Stars in action tonight at Los Angeles. It'll be late so you can safely ignore the game and not worry about it to the worst teams in the NHL the stars with 40 points have the 4th worst record the Kings with 39 of the second worst record to make matters worse for the Stars Brian Bellows their All-Star forward and leading goal. Scorer will not play the night. He suffered a rib injury last weekend. He aggravated it in a game this past week and he is not likely to play tonight. I'm told he's been sent back to the Twin Cities. So no Bellows for the North Stars tonight. However, they remain three points ahead of pathetic Toronto and that death struggle for the fourth and final playoff spot in the north division of the NHL North Stars. Come home next Wednesday to play st. Louis. Basketball to go for women lost Ohio State last night 91 the 59 at Williams Arena. No shame their Ohio State right Nathan the country gopher women committing 31 turnovers and some bad news for the Gophers Leah Blackwell their sophomore guard. Who is there leading scorer in Big Ten play suffered a knee injury last night. Not quite sure how serious it is, but she probably won't play tomorrow. Anyway, when the Gophers play Indiana tomorrow afternoon to Williams Arena gopher Manor in Iowa tonight play the Hawkeyes the dreaded Hawkeyes who are averaging 94 points of game. They're 14 and 5 overall therefore into in the Big Ten 16th in the country and their favorite Buy close to 20 points to beat the Gophers tonight, but where there's clam. There's a way Gophers win their first Big Ten game in more than a year this past Wednesday night and kind of a lackluster performance at Michigan State but a win's a win Gophers play in Iowa tonight, and then they play at Indiana on Thursday night college basketball fans a big one tonight. In Mankato st. Cloud State at Mankato State couple of teams. Near the top of the north central Conference standings and couple of blood Rivals anyway, and an miac action tonight way Gustavus St. John's are playing at I forget where but you probably didn't care. So that's right strikers lost last night Strikers lost at Wichita 41 broke their two-game winning streak Strikers remain in second place in the major Indoor Soccer League Eastern Division. They are about 2 and 1/2 games out of first Cleveland leads. The division Rikers be home on Tuesday night to play Baltimore at the Met Center and I might have I'm talking about the Striker's that I have been roped into performing in a for lack of a better word a celebrity touch football game next Friday night at the Met Center after the strikers big game against Cleveland frankly. I don't know what happened a lot of the details, but I'm told that I will be on a team of would-be celebrities that will be going up against the the Juggernaut notice to KQRS All Stars. I mean featuring such athletic talents as Mark Roseanne and Tom Barnard. I mean, I guess these guys are really good. So because they wanted to make a game of it, they drafted me. You'll recognize me. I'll be there little white guy out there, but the great hands though never drop a ball. So if you if you want to come and bumi that's fine because I guess there's any money raised in the course of the Scandal go to the Special Olympics. So anytime I can abused my body for a good cause it's fine with me as Friday night at the Met Center after the Strikers game against Cleveland your favorite sport folios. JG Preston will be playing touch football and I can touch people with the best of them. As we talked about strikerz Rochester Flyers were on ESPN last night and I missed it 114 to 104. Yeah, the NFL ruling Jeff Walker who fancies himself to be a football may also in charge of my microphone is the control Master today. So I better be nice about him reminds me we were talking about that while you were here last week if we had to restart the sports attorney on last week. We were talking about the other case involving the National Football League Players Association against the NFL what happened yesterday was kind of nothing Federal Court Judge David Doty out of Minneapolis did not rule on a request for a temporary injunction by The Players Association since we have 22 minutes. I think I can explain this here. What the what what happened is that they're there is no basic labor agreement right now between the NFL players and the owner is cuz it expired last year and they couldn't settle on a new one. That's why they went out on strike. Well, they end of the strike and went back to work last year, but they did not sign a new labor agreement players in the owners. Well, there were there were some things in the old labor agreement that kind of like we're in violation of federal antitrust laws things like requiring compensation when free agents change teams a new team would have to give up draft picks to the old team things like the college draft me does he not minor things in violation of federal law, but they weren't violations of federal law as long as both parties agreed to him, but the players were saying he will agree with this anymore. We want out of it. The owners were saying well you're stuck with it until we sign a new contract. That's the way labor law is adjudged OT yesterday decided he would not rule on the injunction request until the National Labor Relations Board rules on whether or not the the players have been bargaining in good faith. Just kind of convoluted. I mean you could understand it and some of you really want to and you can probably read the paper and figure it out. Cuz some people really don't care what it comes down to though is that NFL players have become free agents Monday when their contracts expire if they changed teams than the teams that sign them would have to give up compensation to the road. As it stands right now the the system that has been in effect remains in effect. Although that could change depending on what the nlrb says. So what I'm saying is it happened yesterday, but it takes more time to explain it it's worth but we had some time to kill Jeff and I appreciate the suggestion. There also is a football game of some sort being played tomorrow in San Diego, and I frankly don't care. Just hang on a second. I'm told Jeff tells we just had to listen to calling and wanting to know about the NCAA allegations against the Gopher program. That kind of came out in the newspaper of the Galaxy yesterday in the Star Tribune in case you missed that Splash that is bracken. Always doing a good job. Dennis could work before my boy a friend. I don't know how to call Dennis are my boy. Yeah, the infractions committee will meet next weekend to discuss possible penalties against the gopher football and men's basketball programs for various violations documented over the past couple of years. Nobody's really talking much about it because they don't want to until this thing actually becomes official apparently some punished when is going to be in line possibly reduction of number of scholarships that the Gophers can possibly either basketball or football will be barred from post-season play for a. Of time a year or two. It's hard telling and the NCAA infractions committee has an awful lot of discretionary power available here in its Very hard to speculate advance but judging from what appeared in the newspaper yesterday. I have to say that some kind of penalty is likely against the Gophers how serious it'll be remains to be seen. It is 18 minutes before 1 he wants portfolio on ksjn 1330 MJG Preston. We were going to talk to Ginger helgeson the former State High School tennis champion from Edina Ginger apparently forgot she was going to be on today. She was going to call us. I can't even call her. So having gone past the 10-minute waiting. There's deer burger or did you do this in college or even in high school? I think a high school. We had like that we decided that there was a rule that are high school that if the teacher we're not in the classroom within 5 minutes of the appointed starting time of the class of the class was automatically canceled your high school must have had the same thing cuz I think every high school student in the country thinks there was a rule that affected his or her High School to my knowledge. No such rule was ever existed at any time in his country in any school. But for some reason this is one of these these pervasive mean it's every student thinks. It really does exist. Say what college course ecology Professor is a lot more likely to space off the class or be hungover or something in your in your high-school teacher is but at any rate we will now is a formal room with its portfolio. Why are you buzzing my ear Jeffrey? Oh. Jeff Walker says another color called and wants to talk to 276 thousand. The surreptitious talked to Jeff off the air and relaying the question to me on a on a closed-circuit that you can't even hear on the radio. And you're wondering why I'm not talking fine lines and you give me a call right back to 276 thousand. The 10-minute waiting. Class is canceled friends. No more tennis. We're going to talk about whatever you want to talk about for the next 17 minutes. It's the joy of live radio. And now that I offer people the chance to be on the are there too chicken to call my chickens to 276 thousand to 276 thousand will get you on the year. He runs portfolio because if nothing else I have opinions and if nothing else my opinions are worth every penny you pay for them. There is a football game tomorrow night in San Diego. I refuse to watch I refuse to listen and I'm going to try to duplicate my personal record of 1982 when I wait until 8 Monday morning without knowing the score or who won. And I'm trying to try to match that accomplishment this year. It's well within the realm of possibility for see the game is late enough now. Internal 5 or time it's late enough that I can really very easily blow it off and they will be watching Disney Channel or something. We'll be watching the we might even keep our Dumbo tape. We rented an extra day and just watch Dumbo tomorrow night and not worry about the football at all. My friend. Erica is on a lion Eureka from Anoka the world's biggest st. Louis Cardinal fan. I mean, but you're a big fan. Wondered I thought I had heard you say I want to go to that while everyone else is talking football. You spell James on Super Bowl weekend because you hate going to have him on that. I'm missing. It didn't fall through that. I wouldn't have him on but because of that when I made that raps promise, I didn't know we had this Hotshot tennis tournament coming up. So I decided to talk about the Hot Shot tennis tournament today instead app that week, but I am honored by I'm I'm actually planning to have Bill on the only suitable alternative in my mind. Symbolically for Super Bowl weekend is Valentine's weekend. So I'm planning to see your day before Valentine's Day that will also help counter some of the Olympic height because the Winter Olympics start that day as well. Xavier Cardinale question Xavier baseball questions and Bill will give you the the unvarnished truth. Who has made one of the worst trade in history of baseball and I give up Bob Welch to be helping them. And when are the twins going to do without Jack Clark Erica? You'll get to Love Bob Horner. I'm sure. Set a timer at dial Erika cousin just two short weeks. So we speak to have Bill James talking to you right here on this very same radio station to 276 thousand is a number if either you want to You're So Vain that you want to hear your voice on the radio, or you actually want to hear my opinion on some such thing or even better you actually a question that I can answer it because I am a fountain of information and I can't provide a very useful service in that regard to 276 thousand next Saturday here on portfolio. We haven't got this lined up yet, but it won't be any problem. Okay, so I'll just tell you when I'm planning on doing right now. I have been wanting to have kind of a discussion kicking the North Stars while they're down just talk about what's wrong with the North Stars and and what can be made to correct their situation and I had this in mind even before Lou nanne announced his abrupt resignation this past week for health reasons, and now with Luis leaving a really big decision for the future of the North Star is coming up in the who's going to take his place as general manager. I need a better excuse to talk about the North Stars. So I am I have not Stop to but the plan to ask on Monday and hope that he will accept my invitation Jerry's Agoda of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. I'm hoping Jerry will be with us next Saturday to talk about the northstars. Jerry's extremely well-informed is very good writer. He doesn't outstanding job covering that are stars for the Star Tribune. And since I'm not sit Hartman, you can really believe me when I say this. I don't have a vested interest involved here, but Jerry does a super job and I thought the hockey fans out there have a chance to talk to somebody who knows what's going on and find out what might happen. So Jerry is a go to I hope will be here to talk about the North Stars and the National Hockey League next Saturday as portfolio. Now, this cold that I had last week some you may remember I still kind of have it and normally if we had a guest I would have my guest talking about something and I or I would have a collar on the year and I would be able to blow my nose without you knowing but since we don't have that right now, excuse me, I have to draw the microphone a second and blow my nose. Call the cost pitching radio, but also work for other things to write tissue out. Embarrassing my personal life being splattered all over the radio. Listen to 276 thousands are phone number. If you'd like to give a call and express an opinion to 276. What should the North Stars do JG a well? I'm really glad you asked that frankly. I think her Brooks is a little steamed right now. I don't know Justine door peeved is the right this way. I don't think herb wants to be a coach for the rest of his life. I think being a general manager sounds pretty attractive for one thing general managers have a lot more job stability. I mean usually coaches get fired not general managers. I mean Lily was here for 10 years how many coaches to go through six or seven one general manager that tells you something right there for nothing general managers usually get paid more than coaches for another thing. They usually have a lot more to do with how the team does as far as they have the final say on player Personnel. I think her would like to have those things some of the stability some of the financial reward and then Really some of the ultimate Authority with the hockey team and yeah Gordon gone to a lot of his brother George Jones in Our Stars Gordon virtually ruled out Brooks as a general manager at the press conference on Thursday. And he says that he doesn't like anybody could be GM and coach and Gordon says he's not answering having her baby the general manager at the expense of his coaching got to stick her with being a coach which is nice for now on everything when he was working for a lily. At least there. You get a little job security working for your friend, but I think herb has got to be kind of kind of grousing. I think he'd like to have a chance at something bigger. Maybe something can be worked out where he might not be the titular general manager, but would still have a significant degree of authority as far as player Personnel decisions for me. I think you should I mean her Brooks is a terrifically smart hockey guy and even though North stars are getting their butts kicked left and right this year. I certainly don't think it's because of his coaching. I think if they're ever going to do anything, they'll do it for her Brooks. As it'll be very interesting to see how this gets resolved if the affordable get disillusioned and maybe try to get out of the last year of his contract or just what's going to happen. But I think her Brooks is just too valuable an asset for the northstars to the Let Go Lightly, I think before you look at some White Knight coming in here to save the franchise take a good strong. Look at what her Brooke can do for you in case I have to blow my nose again. I have a caller on the line to help carry the conversation in St. Paul. How are you Jim? I just like to know what your opinion of the twins re-signing Carlton is the definition of a sign of a young driver. I've been trying to keep track of the Reardon situation. What is that situation now, you know is he's demanded a trade and you have to call it the band because the twins don't trade him by I forget the exact date. It's in the middle of March sometime. He becomes a free agent any player who gets traded in the middle of a long-term contract did he sign with another team has the right to demand a trade if he doesn't like the team that he wind up with now we're in case it's not a question that he doesn't like the team that is using this as a bargaining play to try to get an extra year tacked onto his contract. They haven't really worked very hard on it yet because the twins of had other things that I've had earlier deadlines like the free agencies and now the people who are eligible for arbitration. I think you'll see him get together on some kind of an extra year for rear and it might not be completely guaranteed. I have a buyout to it. But I I'm absolutely convinced. You'll see Jeff Reardon Dental twins uniform in 1988 and that may not be formally resolved for another 3 weeks or so, but I'm sure you'll see if I think it pull in my trailer smart enough to do that. Yeah. Yeah, I mean is using his position to get the best deal possible for him and he's no dummy and either of the twins. They realize that the a lot of what they did last year was because of him and if they're going to have any hope of doing it again, they're going to need him back. Thank you very much are phone number if you would like to express some your opinions or ask your questions, he runs portfolio elected to mention that the forty-three-year-old future hall-of-famer who was kind of a bust for the twins last year when they got him grasping at straws in a trade for a minor Leaguer with Cleveland last year Steve Carlton. His major league career has one 329 games you realize it's the 9th highest total. Including somebody steals from the 19th century that went out and pitch underhand every other day and I pitched every game there teams played in quite an impressive career with the car on his head. He's quite an impressive individual. I don't know if you know but his his conditioning his work habits are absolutely legendary Carlton is he has gone through kind of a late life crisis at least my baseball standings a late-life crisis last year. He still kind of had the opinion that he could throw the old smoke like the Lefty of old got to overpower people with that hard slider that was his trademark for so many years and is he just don't throw that hard anymore. So he's in the process of kind of reorienting his his approach to pitching and try to be more of a finesse pitcher and more of a Nibbler and you know, the old change speeds have spots type of thing that a lot of left-handers have taken to the bank. I'm sure the contract he got from the twins is not guaranteed. I'm sure they're not going to be out very much money if any if he does not actually The club given the state of the twins pitching frankly. Steve will not have to pitch terribly well to make the club because the twins best minor league prospects are still at least a year away from being ready to pitch in the major leagues Carlton's very intelligent man. Nobody works harder nobody tries harder and and I have to think he's got a chance to make a contribution as long as he doesn't think he's going to just blow the ball by people. He might want to be surprised or is it spring training in 15 games or anything? I'm at the twins got 10 wins out of Steve Carlton this year. They have to get down and kiss the ground you walk upon several times. This would be a major surprise, but I wouldn't put it past him. Let's put it that way. Somebody's on the phone and Jeff just lost them just got disconnected from Loretto. Did you say come on ain't nobody lives in Loretto be they can't pick up the radio station. So Jim from Loretto if we we cut you off yet. We're sorry and you are come back. That's fine. 2276 thousand of our phone number here on sporkful. If you like to get cut off on you give us a call to his kind of fun and kinky experience to 276 thousand. We have six minutes to fool around and talk about sports Iran's portfolio before we get to the news at 1 and Mark hiestand will review the week's activities right after that. I said his doing that today is Jeff. Okay. I thought so Marcus semien kind of happy today like it in that much to do today, but I guess it was calling and Rose. I'm dying. I have to type to put the station off the air for 20 seconds of blow my nose. I haven't got any calls at the end of believe. I'm grateful for all of y'all. I hope so. Who's the first one there? We'll go st. Paul Bob. Say what you want to know. It really is the name of Mike Lupica. Yeah, and while it was great to review on hyper on the Super Bowl a boy. Well pump spray to turn on baseball starts in another month World Series have the terrible but at least in the World Series a play a game every day you got something to talk about so when so when there's literally just happened to write about it supposed to rain. Same stuff for 14 days in a row I want to ask you, but I do share some interests in the Brewers with other people from Wisconsin to live up here and I didn't I don't think there's a conspiracy up here. We don't read much about the All-Star break last year. He literally did not play at all. I think that's a good thing. By the end he lost nearly all of his power need to drop quite a bit off his average. And of course, he never was exactly world of speed to begin with and in his declining years. He lost most of that Cecil Cooper clearly is no longer going to be a regular either first baseman RDH in the major leagues, but he might yet be able to help somebody as a as a pinch-hitter a spot player but these guys are really played for the nine months was kind of hard to tell us a very popular among his teammates and among people in the community have to be playing for a lot less money than I'm sure he's gotten used to appreciate it. Thanks for calling back. Okie Hyperbole and I'm a little confused on why they asked him back. Play since I heard they were lean towards bringing up Gasser and Bumgarner soon. He's I mean, I I love baseball and I love Minnesota and I think he doesn't fit in. Well if Gathering Bumgarner can kitchen 88, they probably won't need Carlton bring both of them up in spring training in the major leagues this year at all them last year the other pictures like you did last year clearly don't hurt him. He won't help him a bit. They think that if he changes his approach to pitching that he will be significantly better than it was last year I had aged. What is he doing? I don't know if that's 43. I think it may not be possible. But if it if it doesn't work, It's a relatively inexpensive Gamble and frankly about the only the twins are going to improve their pitching is due to roll the dice and hope it comes up their way. Well, let it go by there is no downtown Loretto program in Jeff Walker twiddle the dials. Thank you Jeff on JG Preston. Thanks for listening will see you next week Iran's portfolio. This Is ksjn 1330 Minneapolis-Saint Paul world and national news from the Associated Press is next Denmark high stat has the week in review fog diminishing for the rest of the afternoon 20% chance of freezing drizzle or light snow it's one
