Dr. Gerry Webers, a geology professor from Macalester College in Saint Paul, led a scientific expedition of over 150 researchers to the in the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. There, using Camp Macalester as a base of operations, the scientists gathered information on the continents weather, magnetic structure and past life. Webers and others believe that Antarctica was once a part of Africa. And, to support their belief, they have found fossils of animals and plants that could only have lived in a climate much warmer than that of the South Pole's. For about the next 18 minutes, we hear a portion of a tape journal that Webers sent back from the Antarctic.

Charlie just heard was that of a D4 tractor, which is a very helpful bit of Machinery. We have supposedly moving a pallet of gear from one place to anotherIs there a third day in the house with mountains? And this is the second day of helicopter operations. We have three groups alt right now and the fourth one is about to leave and I will be going out with a 5th group in about 45 minutes when this particular group is place in the field in the helicopter comes back and will be available. So I will be going out looking for fossils of devonian age would have sold 380 million years old. Are we collected a few of these something like 15 years ago and they need to be elected again. The other parties are doing a variety of studies on the strata. Are with me right now? Is it rick Pierce all over the US Geological Survey topographic division. What will you generally be doing here in the Ellsworth mountains? Will be establishing a control Network around the Sentinels at present. There is a prospect for Mile bus between the Heritage Mountain quadrangles and the Sentinel quadrangles in we hope to eliminate that bus find out where the control problems are and enable a new map the Sentinels be published. How will you exactly locate latitude and longitude two things of that nature of different ways most popular one that we will be doing sister's very little horizontal control in the area will be using the Doppler satellite. Position equipment which enabled what it does is it tracks the satellite using the Doppler principle known in physics from that determining a position to launch tourist gold elevation. How close can you get at 16.0 if you were out there for a day or a day or two, I'll Coast could you approximate the position on the surface of the Earth anymore? Down here. We hope with 25 passes of a satellite to be within and 1 1/2 meter cube of 1 meter by longitude. 1 meter latitude one meter elevation located at the very precise and get elevation of this is well, very good. Okay. Thank you very much, Rick and Are the parties loading up the gear in a helicopter and will be taking off shortly? Going out with me this afternoon to collect fossils is dr. Robert Redford vice-chancellor at University University of Nebraska at Lincoln. About collected the devonian fossils approximately 15 years ago and he's going back with me to show me the locality. I also going with us to the third person that I'm doing of Duluth with a geology student at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The temperature now is about 30 degrees Fahrenheit is 40 degrees above zero and the coldest week had. So far is about 0 night. What am I going to parties is about to leave or just starting up the helicopter and alligators are bored. The party that that will take off shortly is a drilling crew part of our paleomagnetic studies. We will be going out to do off all cylinders out of the Rockin with these Tech check the magnetic orientation of the rocks and what this they can tell exactly where the continent used to be are the Ozark Mountains may have been a separate piece of the continent and it's one of the things we will determine while we were here and so the little cars will be taking back in this case to Leeds England University of Leeds, and they will be studied there and on the basis of the information gathered from studying these little Kors. We will be able to talk to previous positions of the North and South Poles. And working this neighbors figure out exactly where the continent was in the past. It's now December 10th, and we're anxiously awaiting the arrival of a C-130 35 for a gear gear and we also need some more fuel. So if you can hear the C-130 in the back, but it's buzzing around really low. There is a lot of low. Ground fog will try to find a place or break in the clouds and the ground fog so that they can see our camp in land. coming closer cuz you scared to come down and meet those new Texas fine. They can't really blame him. I'm glad those guys are cautious rather than you know, yeah I can feel. better luck next time This is December 11th the day after the last transmission plane did come in this morning at about 8:30 in the morning and to bring approximately twelve Thousand Palms of fuel for the helicopters. So that alleviated one of our problems in his benefactor should be a second fuel playing tomorrow and offer tomorrow morning. We should be getting the rest of our gear so we should have everything by tomorrow. Because if you'll came in today, we were able to watch two of our parties to the northern Sentinels. He's are in temporary camps and in one camp, we have three people from Ohio State was telling the point star formation or the uppermost of a rock unit. Also, no turn signals in a separate camp. We have four people to these are from University of Minnesota Duluth, the other two or four Macalester College of the ones from Duluth. Dr. Ritchey logic Angus and dr. Charles match with them or gold and John Craddock. We will be studying a tick rocking. Akali. What are conglomerate? It's been a good day and that we did get those two parties into the field another party. We head out by snowmobile tune up some can't wait. It's probably in the range of all 540 million years old and this was a very valuable thing to us because it for part of us got a graphic section that we did not have so all in all it's been a very good day. But the fuel and cargo coming in tomorrow. We should be able to launch the rest of our crews either tomorrow or the day after so by the day after tomorrow, we should be completely operational in the field at the present time. We did not have enough gear. To put the people out with snowmobiles. We do not have an answer for this week now, but should be coming in tomorrow. So that after we get all of our parties into the fields. We have two days later. I'll be able to get them snowmobiles and Nance and floods in contrast to yesterday is how do they close? The sky today is almost no wind the temperature in about 35 above very very pleasant day all around. Hot by the time it's approximately 9 in the evening. And son is of course trouble brightly shining. And glistening off of the snow. One can look salt into the Heritage range for probably 30 or 40 miles and probably Orthopedic 60 miles away in the in the Sentinel arrange these two angels make up the house with mountains. Today is December 14th has been a very good day. The temperature right now is probably about 30 above and its own. It's going on 12. There's almost no wind. I'm walking on without a parka and in short sleeves without it being kind of wood is not blowing in the Antarctic. It is indeed comfortable. Yesterday we got a fuel flight and A Cargo flight and we launched three parties into the field one man party made up of two or three elements in one direction to the northern Sentinels where they all helped the other two groups that are up there in a study of the Y. Conglomerate and the color star formation. the second party to the Southern Heritage and that is a three-man party. He'll be starting that the lowermost stratigraphic unit that we have the mineral group. Indie pool party that we launched as my party and I'm presently in the wipers Peaks area with a group of four. We got in about noon. We did a little reconnaissance of the surrounding area and look at some of the strata in the upper Heritage formation and collected a few things which might be fossils, but nothing spectacular. This is December 17th. And we're presently heading back towards Camp. The weather is talking in low ground fog and clouds move again, so we're heading back to camp. The sound you hear any of the sound of a snowmobile. Headed back to our tent camp and carving Up the Volume. I can't get up there and we'll probably have a dare to a bad weather. Today is December 18th, and we're presently sitting in our tents and wind is blowing 30 to 40 knots. And we decided to wait a while before we went out today to see what the weather will be doing. Hopefully the the one will calm down and we'll be able to do some work this afternoon might describe a little tent camp here. We have three Scott tents and we have two people eating those. The interior of a Scott 10th is reached by a snow tube and who is a liner with in the tents the liner produces some insulation and they are warmer that way. Area of the floor is about the host at a on a side is probably 7 by 7. yeah, and two air mattresses and sleeping bags are lined up against opposite sides. Senator we have a stove. Presently cooking some water for tea and coco also understand that we have to lock boxes, which I wouldn't Bandit boxes in which we will eventually play sarlacc for shipping back home at the present time. They contain food. And they also serve as a table in the center of the tent. The 10th I'm in right now is cooking 10 that is 110 out of tree has a stove and a meal times people will gather around and chitchat if the evening meal may take as long as three hours by the time that you melt snow for a various drinks and you start preparing food and you eat and then have something else to drink tea coffee milk. So forth the time really flies or it's essentially it's a social engagement in the evening to make the evening meal. I might describe what we have for an evening meal last night. For example, we came in the heated water. We all had either coffee tea or milk or something of that sort. After which we put on some hash brown potatoes and that was the first course everybody had hash browns. This one was followed by a lobster tail. We have African rock lobsters and some of us And this is followed by some with a small piece of steak. So we eat quite well here in a certainly good food is a good morale Factor. Also, of course necessary to keep up your health and so forth. It's not 1:40 a.m. On the 19th, and we've just finished up at work from the 18th. The wind was blowing and blowing so we didn't do much in call the 1040 much and that with the wind die down about supper time. So after a Charlie Hardy supper we shut off and get a day's work. And I guess I lost you to go the fact that you must take advantage of whatever time is available to do your work. And now it's about time for bed.
