I want people's relationship in work to be equivalent to the relationships in life. And I want I want to try to break down this idea that there's work over here and that's what you do from nine to five five days a week in his life over here and Life Starts after 5 on a weekend events absolute a rip-off. If you play your life out that way you're living a hundred percent of the time when you're working a lot of people sacrifice themselves to the job that sang. Well what the hell it's a job and I need a job and I might as well take something in this is the first thing you came along and like that the philosophy of Tom Jackson it consultant to Manpower services and other employment groups Jackson is the author of a book 28 days to a better job and it he describes in detail the methods he recommends for gaining a position that you want today. He describes not only how to find the work you want, but how to enjoy the work you find.Jackson takes his own advice very seriously. He realized some time ago. There was a need for consultants in the job finding and job interviewing field. So he developed his methods in order to create his own position as a job counselor and freelance consultant my main thrust of Maine throughput of what everything that I do is to expand people's ability to come from who they are into the work world and expand our organization's ability to relate to people in a way that expands the satisfaction and values handed hand cuz you want them to be able to grow in their work. And yeah, that's one of the things but I don't care if they grow I mean frankly so she can get off one moment by Moment by Moment by Moment by moment that's getting to the same job for 20 years if they choose to do it today because I work at what usually you're getting jobs and then after it's challenge after while you're excited and challenge by and you get in it and you learn all theTurn all the things in the techniques and procedures and pretty soon you just one day arrives until I've handled this job and then you freeze it into like a record and every morning you put the record on that the job. Let's talk just a moment about this this process of job satisfaction snow. I feel very fortunate because I enjoy my work I enjoy my job. and And yet I understand that out of 10 people. There will only be one other person like me two out of 10 will enjoy their how can we be so Misdirected so the eight out of every ten of us does not like his or her job that problem comes out of the fact that people don't experience the idea that they can choose their work. It's like the way most people traditionally have gotten their jobs in this country as you put out your metaphorical you put your thumb and you wait for a job to come along and the job comes along and switches to a stop in front of you and your hot pop in it and you know, and then you forgot where you end up going, you know in 5 years later you find yourself in the outskirts of Topeka somewhere and what and how the hell I get here what you know what this all about. When's the next bus on the street again, you put your thumb at you take the next job and hoping this was going to work at so thing that I want to do is I want and think that I think the area that I am focusing on mostly is in a contextual. I think the area that I'm making a major contribution the continent any contribution I'm making is coming really in this area is to look at the context of everybody's been for years telling you how you can write the resume and I know How do you write the resume I can tell you how to handle the interview? And I know that's fine. Now. I want to look under that. I want to look what's in the way. What are the elements? What are the what are the what are the contextual point and an interesting thing is that when people start to see that that is and I'm giving people permission in quotes to make them play it out the way they would play it out already if they felt it anybody else would be able to do it that way. It's like that's just common sense. How come I never did that cuz know whatever you never saw anybody else doing that. You never saw him. I was going to do a little research before they want to interview. You never saw anybody else to really be willing to jump fields and go to something is more satisfying so it's kind of like with the element of choice and no added in satisfaction comes out of not so much what the job is but how you got there and your experience that you chose it really that's it. Anything washing dishes can be a great trip if you choose to go ahead and put your hands in soapy water wash dishes and You have to do it and someone tells you do it tonight. So negative trip. In reality, what's true is the jobs are unlimited jobs are merely opportunities to solve problems. And there are a limited number problems. There's no shortage of problems. I don't think anybody is required with that WhatsApp is the fact that people don't approach jobs that way people approach jobs essentially out of their needs rather than that of the ability to create value when you if the easiest way in the world to create a job is to look out in the world in that particular point of view that you've chosen. Then you go back a step in the formulas like this. You did come up with a job Target for simplicity's take a job target has at least one component of skill one component of interest, you know, I want to be a graphic designer in the water sports industry or you want to be a you know commentator or interviewer on a small radio station, you know, one component of skill one component of Interest From John Target you then look out in the world you say out in that particular segment of the universe what's going on? So now you look at the job so I could have broadcasting the area broadcasting you determine what are the things within that segment of job Target that the employers need what do the employees of the organization to wear that? And what do they need with the problems are having what they were trying to accomplish. What is it in me that can contribute to the solution of that and then how can I communicate that who do I communicate it to then? You can until someone gets the message that you're communicating value into a problem by the person that has the most acutely feels the problem and you came in with a solution and you've created a relationship which is a work relationship. Any jobs are not finite. They are definitely created the questions. Usually the way they're created is a committee of four people to look at a higher three more assistant media planners instead of you coming in and say, you know one of things I know what is happening in media is you're not doing much in billboard. And I am great expertise and then I can come in and show you how I can add that to your advertising agency expand your you know, your service your clients. Are employers receptive to that though? I have hell, yes. What do you need for training the on-air Personnel to sound good to run the equipment. So we wrote up the need for it. I wrote up a plan for its submitted it and I had to go in the office and get it or they would have thrown it away. And then you just weren't interested. Any employer will hire any individual so long as the employer is convinced that it brings more value than it cost. You didn't get the message till it be great. So now you go to another one then you go to another one then you go to know when you got nothing to find somebody gets it or something in what you communicated wasn't didn't get to the right person something in me. And the way that I presented the material only weighs wasn't right didn't get the message cuz it is true that if they improve their ability to other people on are to get the job done if they're going to improve their bear station and I'm you know, it's not foolproof. Sometimes the communications walls to communication are so structure that it's hard to get through. However, what does work abstractly and conceptually is to communicate value and you know, any employer will hire anybody that they experience will get value out of us with the that's what business is in the Free Enterprise in Florissant dying to spend money. Play funny business is about his finger up more intelligent ways to spend some money. So it's like my process in which in my book 28 days to a better job is literally to identify every specific segment along the way subdivided into its small components. And then let you see that's the obvious next step and then ask yourself a question. Are you willing to take it if the answer is yes, there's a form for you to do it at the answer is no identify with the barriers are in the way that's literally all there is to the process and out of that will come a creation of work relationships of flexibility many people who go through courses that I've done we're going through courses at 9 for 5 years ago and we hear from have taken that ability and you know the next job on their own in the next job on their own and just a matter of being programmatic. It's a matter of knowing that you can do it there. A lot of people 8 out of 10. It's been said that are Finding themselves not in the right job. But yet there are some things I don't like about their work. They like to do something else. Yes. What keeps the men that job why why is it difficult for us to to step out and take that chance in fear fear fear of fear of rejection fear of success fear of trying for failure? Literally, we have got it so drummed into ourselves that boy, you're not making you don't have a job. You're in trouble. If you don't have a job, you are really in trouble on the way. That's true. Well, if you have a job and it's and it's deadening to you you're in trouble. Okay, you know, so you're in trouble if you have a job that doesn't work for you and your troubles you don't have a job. And if so much of the fear that and it comes to you know, traditionally typically, you know, most people's parents, you know, when they come home from work to oh my God, you know, we need to get more money when I make the bills. Why can't we get used to the job has become synonymous with dudes you have to pay to exist in the society that we live in right now rather than as an opportunity to be and the it's interesting but the but on the other side of it, is it the way that work World a structure right now. It's almost idea for you to experience work as an opportunity to be we have never had a greater variety of jobs ever ever ever ever greater change new jobs being invented every six months in a whole new raft of Technology things and social things in political thing. It's too late now, you know coming out of the late sixties. It's now totally all right for people to focus on their own lives and the benefits that they get out of work and used to be that you never got to think about that. It's now okay change jobs every couple 3 years used to not be that way and even in the most professional Fields now you can change nose more. So that's like the time is really ripe and yet people are still stuck in the depression mentality of what you need to get a job or I'm not going to make it, you know, and kids come through school and literally up to the point where they got to go out the door with their sheepskin in hand have not had a sense of their ability to make a difference in the quality of work-life. So that's like that's really one of the things I want to confront and That brings up another question and that is that for most of the jobs that I see advertised. It's a master's degree wanted be a damn you wanted but on the other hand, I hear a lot of things from from many employers that the degree being a degreed individual is not as important as it was even five years ago that that it's the experience that an employer is looking for how how true is this job done. So if you don't know what to ask for at the candidate doesn't know how to sell themselves you fall back into the easiest most easily measurable things so we can measure your degree because it says, Ms. Or BS or whatever we can measure your years of experience years of experience is a terrible measure of a person's ability to do the job. I mean some of the test that they've run and I have done that many of them just one very very large one. That was done. there's almost no correlation between the amount of experience in a particular area Now quickly take out the highly technical things II II I don't leave it out entirely, but there's very little Relationship with infinity amount of experience and ability get the job done quickly enough volitich fast-changing area now for sure you would need to have experience in putting together how to put together the equipment in here and plug in the plugs and you know be willing to overcome your whatever and get on the air. 12 years of experience in that may not add to that ability the fact that you're 12 years experience does not mean that you're a more qualified than 6 months ago. The length of time of experience is what I did during those five or six or twelve years and how many areas are what your skills and interests are right now today related to what is it? We want you to do right then. I mean it might mean that we wanted to start a new area. We want somebody who's fresh and new and hasn't gotten 12 years of experience in my workout the best so experienced generally is a substitute or it gets in the way of Our Guest to become important as candidates don't know how to relate to the communicate value most candidates going to the interview that communicate their needs not the values you say. So if you if you got a needy candidate and six or eight needy candidates and you want to find out some way of selecting them one of them's you grab at his experience cuz you can measure it in years for drugs to post these two turn Circle. Need and value. Can you give me a capsule description of what each term need is expressed. I'm looking for a job of anything. You know, I'm really really looking for judging. I need a job. Yeah, I need to make a certain amount of money. I need a raise no G on my bills are mounting up and you know, I need to have an extra dollars a month to pay my bills. She's like it you could so who cares just like it's like I'm dumping on you my needs and those needs are pulling at your heartstrings and trying to get you to the baby, and college kids college should have gotten through college out of their needs and then they only need 5 more credits to get this minor to County ten bucks to get back to school or I only need a card because I really need this and I need this and I need this it's worked out into the Work World. What works is value and what value is His contribution or support Step One is look who am I what I'm going to do about it. Look inward before you look outward step to get a job Target out of that. What are the building blocks step two is right now and the jobs are who are the employer's job Target you mean what am I able to do? What matches one component of skill one component of Interest. I want to be a graphic designer in the water sports industry. I love water sports. Give me a big trip and I'm good graphic designer bottom together become a graphic designer in the workforce center job target has a component of skill a component of interest and satisfaction Nexus who are the potential employers will using the example. I just came up with that give potential employees are the water sports manufacturers. Oh, so you do a little research to identify who they are whether or not they've had an address advertised any positions. Third step is to identify the answer to the question. Why should I hire you? See that's the inarticulate questions like or create more value than you cost. You know, it's like actually identify. What is it that will contribute to the needs and and problems and things at that particular employer refuses isolated would need service a graphic designer in the worst witch industry. Maybe I would have done if I there need to market products better have to know how to fill the bill. Can you find out what the bill to feel is first and then you look at yourself you find out what is the thing that you had that will contribute to the solution and then you start to communicate that then you set up a process of communication and realize that the major thing that gets in everybody's way in the job search is the fear of being rejected. Literally the thing that runs all of us in our lives is the fact that we may not make it we will do anything to avoid being turned down anything. So I see people go out of the job camping with a fresh new idea their job Target and you know 8 weeks later. They taking some crummy job in the back room of some How do you know that website I really tried I really looked hard. But what happened to track it that backwards they got it made for phone calls. Ford turn down and gave up. They would rather go into a crummy job then get three more nose in the telephone and every job search that there is looks like this no no no, no, no, no, no. No, yes, those nose hurt and then nose hurts other way to get through it. Clearly. There's no way you can change it the way he gets through it if there's is a system called no no, no, no, no, no, no. No. Yes. The only way to work it is to create more nose faster far out. I got $10 this week next week make it into a process where you are creating the nose and continue to go through that. You will have absolutely you will run into a yes eventually 450,000 employees in this country to hire more than 50. Then employ more than 50 people. So I'm you need to waste hundreds of them. So don't stop continue to create the nose matter what I suggest you get it a sheet. Unless 10 rows of 10 knows on the sheet and the Star-Crossed. It works fat is that it works? That's all I am is a pragmatist, you know that works and that's what will happen. And then you know, then you identify that and then you can communicate that includes you put together a resume and a cover letter and you go into the interview prepared and you you know, you do some of the tactics and things that we've laid out in my book in great detail and like that but basically that's it. They're the essential underlying points. Can you add one more point is that too? Is there another Point keeping a job and not keeping the same job in sense8 the game keep the game going. It's what I mean you get into the job in the process continues to keep create value. You can tell you to look for people for needs you continue to be like a surfboard or you don't get over specializing healing one wave. You can move from wave to wave to wave, you know, you know, what's going on you keep communication. You keep keep getting feedback and you steal responsibility. You steal responsibility look for every opportunity cancer look like that for you. When you start Stihl responsibility and you'll notice that what happens if you just keep moving and moving and moving and moving and moving and all of a sudden the responsibility starts coming to you value the value satisfaction comes out of playing the games and making what's we finish this interview Bowl satisfactions complete? Play it from choice not I have to go to work literally every two months if necessary look and see what you wrote ready that you're going to choose that job again, Tom Jackson a freelance job finding a job interviewing consultant and the author of a book 28 days to a better job.
