I'm Republican the reader and the writer ultimate concern you hope to connect but the only way you can hope to do that is through Excellence of your work. You can't do anything but give all your energy and thought to making a piece of work good enough that we'll connect. So that's just what you hope you try to make things. Loosen and describe to the memory and all the people on the imaginations and other people and connect through those things by which human beings talk to each other for over 40 years. Novelist. Eudora Welty is giving readers a unique sense of the South she's known as a regionalist but her Works explore the south in more than geographical terms in her many novels and short stories Eudora Welty travels to the inner core of her character's exposing their Visions their hopes their dealings with everyday life the Mississippi Bourne author considers herself a part of the Southern writing tradition, but holds a certain warmth and Fascination for the Midwest is well in the late 1920s. Well, he studied at the University of Wisconsin, but despite that temporary move to the Midwest and her many travels both here in America and in Europe Eudora welty's home in a literal and literary sense is Jackson, Mississippi. It took much convincing to get her to a 10. The recent North Dakota writers conference has North Dakota University English professor. John little tells it even his own influence as a fellow Jacksonian didn't persuade Welty until he began yearly summer visits to the writer's home bearing Fame Smith County watermelons while after nine years of the melons and conversations she gave in and put aside her writing for a week to talk with students and writers in Grand Forks. There is a meekness and almost apologetic are about Eudora Welty with a self-effacing shrug. She asks why anybody would want to interviewer Eudora Welty says she speaks enough in her writing it is difficult for her to amplify the ideas verbally. Riders view their roles in many ways. For example, Sam Bello said recently that he is 90% historian and often reluctant to impose a moral value or judgment upon the reader I asked welte if she agreed it doesn't happen, but everyone has his own I don't feel like any service during because I'm writing about human beings that on a more. As human beings and it's there. Individual experience teaches some things not on a grand scale and I don't pass Marla judgment in my work and don't like the idea but no Rider can write without a moral judgment. I think that's in your the Givens for a writer. I mean that you are part of your equipment is that you have a moral understanding. Of your society and your people and you use that as another ingredient in your writing, but I don't use it to tell the reader what he should thinking do I try to let the characters reveal their own situation you've been analyzed as as being a writer of inner thoughts of characters and you've also been analyzed having a central sense of place. Do you go along with that analysis when I certain that? Yeah, I think so. I have a strong sense of place because it is another thing that equips a rider by giving him. A porcupine and a way of understanding and a way of making the world of his characters clear which makes for understanding of the characters. It's the way I understand things. And of course everybody has some in her life and I try to write about that as well as the external it's the most you right from inside. and I try to make I respect the readers feelings from inside and I respect my character's feelings from inside. That sounds very goody-goody, but though. list of fact You talked yesterday. There was a sense of improvisation about it the musician piece. The one that use Fats Waller is the basis for do you do that often now? Do you trust yourself to improvisation? No, actually, I don't ever I try to give that affect and I tried to give that effect in the story about the jazz musician because that's what he was doing and I suppose it was and that case on my part, but that would be unique with me because I try to keep everything under strong controlled danger though. I mean, do you ever feel that? Perhaps you're being to self discipline? No, I don't think so because I let my imagination go as as far as it wants to go because all I do trust that I do trust things that you imagination. Lead you to go off. Far out on a limb and I think you have to go far out on the limb, but that's different from improvisation. I do that knowing they an improvisation is is if you don't know what the end is going to be always know what the end is going to be. I was talking with the writer of a few weeks ago who said there are certain characters that he has that he can't get rid of the keep surfacing. Do you have certain characters that you can't get rid of I come to realize later on I guess to I was slow to realize it that I open. Write about some of the characters under different names in different times and in different stories characters who runs as a school teacher that keeps recurring in my stories and I didn't realize that she was sort of a person of the same impact and significance in my life very different kinds of women and full feeling different functions. The women in welty's novels are wonderfully Rich characters, they often struggle with the possibilities and limitations of love all influenced by that sense of place. And in addition to those Monumental questions, Eudora Welty stories are people with the everyday uemura pettiness and idiosyncrasies of the South that's evident in a story. She chose to read at the conference a word called petrified, man. Reaching my person get me a cigarette without no powder in it. So it just no telling what now you take me I asked Mr. Fletcher's advice now and then he appreciates it, especially on something important. Like is it time for a permanent? Not that I've told him about the baby. He says why they're going to have advice would be floating down the river on a houseboat or something by this time to the other. I'm sick of bread. Is it going to work in Vicksburg ice Miss Fletcher and sure lady Evangeline said so she said the future is going to be Bridal in the present. He don't want to go but I ain't going to put up with nothing like that lays around the house and Bulls Deadpool with that good-for-nothing. Mr. Pike. He says if he goes who cook but I said I never got to eat anyway not meals for that screen secrets and Leggett mishpucha heard stamping feet go out the door is that that Miss pipes little ball here again. So come Nightfall last bread and miss miss miss the pie who Fred just took up with was back when they said they was fishing ban is neither one of us got a job to his name and we was all sitting around in their room. So many Pike was sitting there reading the old startling G-Man Tales. It was mine mind you I bought it myself and all of a sudden she jumps into the are you the thought you said on a spider and says Canfield ain't that silly? That's mr. Pipe can fill my daughter mother. She says, how can you won't have to work now that he turned one hand. Anyway, we're men Fred rushes over to on this bike to and that she says Taunton of finger at a photo in my copy of starting and G-Man say that Miami or Miss by I remember him can build Never forget a face this mr. Pay. It's mr. Peck tree that we stayed with him in the apartment next to ours and Toulouse Street and Andover 6 weeks. Mr. Patrick. Well since Miss Pike, like she can't hold out one. Second longer Mr. Pecker is wanted for $500 cash for Raven for women in California. And I know where he is. Mercy said Miss pleasure. Where was he at? Sometime Liotta have washed her hair. Now. She younger up by the back lights and set her up. No way was I certainly don't send this pleasure her scalp hurt all over Liotta flung a towel around the top of a customer's head. No where else but in that freak Show. I saw him just as plain as Miss Pike. He was the Petrified man. Who would ever thought that crime is budget sympathetically as well? What do you know about that? He looks real hard at the photo and whistles and she starts dancing and singing about that. Good luck comenout bad luck. I made a point of telling that part until the next time I saw her I said listen that magazine was laying around the house for a month and they was at freak show running night and day not to step away from my own beat a pilot with Mr. Pecker. Just sitting there waiting and it had to be missed and Miss Pike almost perfect strangers. What goes in this pleasure? She was only sitting there wrapped in a turban, but she didn't mind watching tell us don't care and Miss pipe. She gets around. You think she was Miss God should Liotta so they're going to leave tomorrow. Mr. Miss Pike. And in the meantime, I got to keep that mean by a little kids are getting under my feet of a minute of the day and talk back to have they gotten the $500 for wallet already as Miss Fletcher. Well should Liotta at first. Mr. Goldberg said he was real nice to him. None of money or something. But miss Pike Simba told him he could just go to hell and I can see her pain. She says you ain't worth collecting 6 months and here I make $500 in 2 seconds or what things do I get for you go to hell can bail. She said slowly over the one on on this phone device. They call it the cops and they caught the old bird. All right right there in the freak Show while showing with my own eyes thinking he was petrified. He's the one there. Dre's real name. Mr. Petra for women in California right next door to my beautiful. I cried all night. Appreciate it when a better using the go to sleep. Cuz the whole thing was just a set of a coincidence, you know can't do nothing about it. He says it put him clean out of the notion of going to Vicksburg for a few days till we run out the room again, no telling who will get this time. But can you imagine anybody knowing this old man? That's right for women persisted Miss Fletcher and shut her daughter date the Miss Pikes Peak to him when she met in the freak Show. Leota had begun Nokomis pledges how I said to her I said I didn't notice you falling on his neck when he was a petrified man. Don't tell me you didn't recognize your fine friend and she says I didn't recognize him with that white powder all over his face. He does look familiar Miss Pike says and lots of people look familiar Miss Pike says That old petrified man did put her in mind to somebody she wondered who it was kept her awake which man should ever knew it reminded us. So when she seen the photo it all come over. Like a flash Mr. Petrie the way he turned his head and look at her when she took him in his breakfast took him in his breakfast and don't tell me I got something for women. I guess those women didn't have the faintest notion that the time may be worth a hundred twenty five bucks a piece Sunday to make pipe. We asked her how she says he must have had one foot in the grave at least. Can you beat it? Not really petrified at all. Of course, it makes blessed meditatively. She Drew herself up out of felt something. She said proudly I did feel something when I got home. I feel so funny. I said bread that old petrified man. Shouldn't lie make a funny feeling. He says funny Ha-Ha or funny peculiar peculiar coupon and a Coleman to the are emphatically I bet you did send Miss Fletcher. They both heard a crackling noise Liotta screamed at a bar. What are you doing in? My purse now? I'm just eating these old stale peanuts upset Billy by You come here to me scream Leo directorship laying down her come with scatter the whole ashtray full of bobby pins and knock down the road Coca-Cola bottle. This is the last straw. I called him. I told him giggle Miss Fletcher. I'll hold him on my lap you bad bad boy you I guess I better learn how to spank little bad by it. She said, Leoda's 11 customers pushed open the swing door upon Liotta paddling him heartily with the brush when he gave angry but belittling screams which penetrated beyond the booth and fill the whole curious. Paula from everywhere latest began to gather round to watch the paddling Billy boy kick both Liotta and Miss Fletcher's Harley could miss Fletcher with her new fix mild Bella by stomp to the group of wild hair ladies and went out the door was flung back to where it says if you are so smart. Why ain't you rich Eudora Welty petrified man. One of the themes that recurred at the writers conference with the sacrifice writers make for their art a fellow speaker Tillie Olsen name the number of women who she termed silenced by society's demands Eudora Welty was not on that list, but Olson did imply that well, he was one of those few noted women writers who sacrificed family life for a home in literature Welty disagreed. Any trouble getting accepted or rejected a whatever because I'm a woman because I think that's one thing that a woman has received treatment in this and sending in a story to an editor and getting it acceptable sent back according to it's worth. I trust that I don't have a felt that I was Put upon except by a squire magazine you send something back to me ages ago because I was a woman which struck me as hilarious and later on. They apologize part in print. But I know I've always had a very warm family life. I never gave up anything for it. I've done just what I wished in my life. And so I've been very lucky. I'm not saying that. Kelly Olson hasn't got a pint, you know, I I see that very clearly but I'm a function that example of someone who Has always been able to just work as anyone else would man or woman I should say and writing your you work for yourself. You're Your Own Boss. You make your own decisions. I guess what what Tillie Olsen was getting at was the fact that maybe through through your good fortune and and maybe some fortunate economic circumstances. You were in a position to be able to do that. Some women aren't not at all. I've always had a job. I didn't have any fashion an economic came along in the depression without a job. My father had just died. Everything went was very awkward financially and my family, so I just I got a job and wrote on the side and I've always earned a living not through my writing but by things I've done to buy the time to write this being an example coming here to work at the writers conference is Pleasant work, but what he's done for me is to support me so that I can go home and write. During the Depression Welty also went home to photograph during the Depression. She worked as a government-sponsored project director in Mississippi. She says her early photography assignments taught her how to release ate some of her film has been collected now and matched with selections from her writings. The exhibit is traveling across the country by Dale and the work of a Young Museum director in Jackson, Mississippi who had noticed They have the archives in Mississippi have all my negatives of photographs all my long time ago. They also have my manuscript and she just happened to notice coincidental things in it how I photograph something and then maybe years later on a story about something almost like that would occur in the story. They did not come one from the other day just because I've seen both so sheep made the exhibition all on her own. It's entirely homework you agree with most of the pairings. Yeah, I think they work very well. I might have done different ones. I found all this I mean, but what I think it was so ingenuous and sympathetic on her part to I feel grateful to her pointing this out to me. What is your approach to photography approach to fiction? No, there's no connection. I can think of except the recognition of maybe a significant moment or something. I would just photograph things as I saw them. I never posed anyone or did anything like that too? Baseball snapshots but what I did do was recognized. I hope People doing a certain thing or a certain time that might convey something some old people trying to cross the street, you know, I mean it just spoke of itself at about the same time. You began writing professionally. What was it? Did it come after it came before I had a job at my first job I guess was which was the WPA which you might not know the meaning of Publicity something and I went all over the state doing journalism interviews and photographs. And so I got the camera in my work and then I'll begin photographing on the side because of my interest in what I saw. These weren't made for the WPA that were made for me. But that was what started me and my stories came later. I was trying to write all this time while I was working, but I haven't sold anything at this time. I haven't really said anything out. I was working. Play my first story came out just about the time that a job ended with Roosevelt's reelection for sale. Yeah actually was Messiah I didn't set anything quite a while but it was a publication a magazine in Athens, Ohio young beginning Riders. I paid nothing, but that wasn't the important thing. They put you in print and you got you felt you were a professional other people could read you you had someone had seen, you know before that nobody that was seen it so And then I assume so magazine of stories do the southern review. Which didn't pay? You know, I'm nominal sum that is again that didn't matter was being on a fine publication like that. It mattered there's about six years before that. Soldier National magazine like the Atlantic Monthly. What are you working on now? Well, I'm just getting ready to publish another book. It's collected criticism in reviews that I've written over the years and it's coming out. I guess in April. What happens when the rider becomes critic? Well, I did this was another thing I did in order to earn a living, you know book reviewing and writing essays and lectures and things eversole assigned work and you write fiction. Of course, I didn't understand. It's putting your mind and in the opposite direction. I enjoy it. I had to learn to do it. It didn't come naturally to me. Why not? What what kind of defenses did you find? Nothing, except that I like to think in terms of fiction. And analyzing is the reverse process. You see it's after the after the fact you can look back at something and analyze it but before you've written it your mind is not analytical at all. You're not analyzing when you write fiction. And so I just I had to Do I learn to working to directions? I've enjoyed it and I've learned a lot that weighs made me read a lot of things. I would might not have read has it affected the way you're writing your fictional no, nothing to lose cuz it's two different processes. Just the way you could assist different us. O playing the piano and Pioneer picture in the early 1960s back in 1963. And the battle X in the south Play murder of Medgar Evers happen in Jackson, Mississippi and I was writing a novel at the time but this event for the pushed up through it and then when it happened and I couldn't think of anything else so during that night, I wrote a story. But double reason one reason was that like most Southerners in this 6 is this is while all the troubles with combined of the South before they had moved into the Nas. I used to get so many telephone calls from places like Trenton, New Jersey and around saying why aren't you writing about such things and I didn't try to explain I'm in the circumstances that I thought I had always written about. Emotions and math and about Justice and Injustice. It wasn't anything new to me. But this one this happened. I thought I was so tired of reading things written about our troubles from the outside when people wrote in generalities about the south and rice and Salon. None of it seemed to me to be quite valid not. I'm in a position where I ought to know what kind of person it was that did this deed. I've lived in the South all my life and I think that I could imagine myself with a great effort into the mind of such a murderer. It was a very daring thing for me to try to do and of course murder was not known then and I wrote the story went back was never convicted. I wrote the story that night and sent it to the New York and they took it and ran it quickly because it was sort of news where they I mean it depended on current events, but value I had to move it out of Mississippi and Alabama. I'm sorry. So the New Yorker wouldn't be single. Well, I don't think I said when I moved it to. I call it's not a good title for selling when I have where is The Voice coming from? Cuz it this time I didn't know whose Bell as it would be was saying this monologue. access to my wife You can reach and turn it off. You don't have to sit and look at a black mirror face no longer you want to listen to what you don't want to have. It's still a free country. I reckon that's how I give myself the idea. I suppose I could find right exactly where in the Bible I got niggas living and ice and asking for equal time and without a bit of trouble to me. And I ain't saying it might not be because that's pretty close to where I live the other hand that could be reasons you might have yourself and knowing how to get there in the dark. It's where you all go for the thing you want when you want it the most ain't that right? The branch bank sign tells you in lights all night long what time it is and how hot when it was clear up at 4 and 92. That was me going by my brother-in-law's truck. He don't deliver nothing at that hour of the morning. So you leave for Connors and head West on Nathan B Forrest Road past the Surplus & Salvage. Not much Beyond The Comeback Drivin and trailer Camp not as far as where the sign starts playing live bait used parts fireworks peaches and sister people's reader and advisor trim before you hit the city limits and duck back towards the IC tracks and his streets been paid. And they was his light on waiting for me in his garage. If you please his car is gone. He's out playing in the still some other way. So they would we tell him they can't I thought I'd beat him home and all I had to do was pick my tree and walk-in close behind it. I didn't come expecting not to wait, but it was so hot. All I did was hoping pray. One of the others wouldn't melt before it was over. I wouldn't know bargain I'd struck. I've heard what you heard about goat dightman's in Mississippi. Sure. Everybody knows about to go date money go. He got word to the governor's mansion He go up yonder and shoot that make a Meredith cleanup School. If he's not out of the pan to do it oreilles turn that over in his mind before seeing him know it stands to reason. I ain't no go back one and I ain't in no pan and I ain't give me one thing unless he wants to give me a pat on the back for the trouble. I took this morning, but he don't have to if you don't want to I done what I done for my own pure-d satisfaction. As soon as I heard Wheels, I know he was coming that was him and bound to be him. It was the right nigger heading in a new white car of his driveway towards his garage with the light shining stopping before we got there. Maybe not to wake them. That was him. I knowed it when he cut off the car lights and put his foot out and I know them standing dark against the light. I know them then like I know me now, I know them even buy a still listening back. Never seen him before never seen him since never seen anything of his black face, but his picture never seen his face alive any time at all or any where's and didn't want to need to never hope to see that place and never well, as long as there was no question in my mind. He had to be the one he stood right still and waited against the light. His back was fixed fixed on me. Like a preacher's eyeballs. When is yelling all you say it? He's the one I already brought up my rifle that already taken my sights and I already got him because it was too late then but him on me to turn my 1 hair. Something darker than him like the wings of a bird spread on his back and pulled him down. He climbed up once like a man under the bedclothes and I just blood good way of time he woke with it on his back to bed a light didn't get no further than his door and failed to stay. He was down he was down and a ton of bricks on his back from the lady in the heavier by owner is paved driveway. Yes, sir. He was like me and the mocker he stayed right with me. Then they are to come to crack that I turned loosen my load. I was like him I was on top of the world myself for once. I step to the edge of his like their way is lying laying flat. I says rolling. It was one way left for me to be ahead of you and stay ahead of you by dad and I just taken it now. I'm alive and you ain't we ain't never now never going to be the Eagles and you know, why one of us is dead. What about that rolling I said, well you seem to it didn't you? I still have minute just to see what somebody inside come out long enough to pick him up and that she comes the woman. I doubt she been to sleep cuz it seemed to me like she been in there keeping awake all along. With my degree in when I scan over the yard getting back that nigga live. I guess she wanted nice grass. I bet my wife would hate to pay a water bill and the burning her electricity and there is my brother-in-law's truck still waiting with the door open. No Riders. It says I didn't mean me. The one thing I've been able to think of sense would have made it going and nicer except the chair at the my back while I was putting in a waiting but going home. I seen what little time it takes after all the other things done like you really wanted. It was 4:34. And while I was looking at moving 35 and the temperature stuck where it was only at night. I guarantee you it a step without graphing a good night at 2. Ryu says what did mosquitoes bite you she said? Well, he been asking that question better than trouble to load a rifle and get some of these agitators out of the novel. I did the Bella keep drumming it in. What a good idea the one that was right to call him every day. I said to my wife find some way I don't get the credit. He says do it for the X. She says don't you have a scam to paper? I just the mobile. I never done nothing for me. And I don't know nothing but the muffle I didn't do it for you either. He'll let him know and I do something or other for them for them to Kennedy's. I done it for my own. He's satisfaction. It's going to get him right back on TV says my wife you watch for the funeral. I cuz you didn't even leave a light burning when you went to bed. So how was I supposed to even get me home approved? But his truck up safe in their front yard. I ain't but one I reckon you have to tell somebody. Why is a gun then? My wife says what you do without protection? I said it was scotch and it was scotch and I told her it's laying out on the ground and rank weeds trying to cool off. That's what it's doing now. You dropped it. She says back there. And I told her because I'm so tired of everything in the world being just that hot to the touch the keys to the truck the door knob the bed sheet Elder thing. It's all like a stove lid that just ain't much doing worth holding onto no more. I said when it's a hundred and two in the shade by day and by night not too much difference. I wish you laid your finger to that gun. Trust you to come out and leave it. My wife says is that how no-account I am she makes me ask you want to go back and get it. You're the one they'll catch. I say it so hot that even if you get to sleep you wake up feeling like you cried all night since my wife. At least I kept some during teenager from north of Michael I get man doing it first. I says driving his own car. On TV and in the paper, they don't know what half of it. They know who Roland Summers was without knowing who I am his face was in front of the public before I got rid of him. And after I got rid of it, but it is the same picture and none of me. I ain't never had one made not ever the best shot newspaper could do for me with y'all for a $500 reward to finding out who I am. For as long as they don't know who that is, whoever shot rolling is worth a good deal more right now than rolling is but by the time I was moving around Uptown, it was hotter still that pay you money in the middle of Main Street was so hot to my feet. I might have been walking the barrel of my gun if the whole world could have just felt Main Street this morning through the soles of my shoes. Maybe it would help they'll never find him the old man trying to sell roasted peanuts tells me to my face And it's so hot. It looks like the towns on file already. Whichever way is your turn that was free to strike because there's those trees hanging them poems of Bloom like spit watermelon and 1000 cups. Crab NeverWet cops crab and wherever you go. I have I'm too young to start shaving but I was screaming sweater. Like I'm getting tired of him. I was already tired of seeing a hundred cops getting us white people know, where's back at the beginning. I stood on the counter and I watch them new Babyface cops loading nothing but negative children into the Patty wagon and they come marching out of a little parade and into the Patty wagon singing and they got in and said I am without providing a speck of trouble and their hands held little new American flags and the cops could do was knock them play sticks and leaves from their hands and not let him pick him up that was all and give him a free ride. And children can just get them or Flags. Everybody it don't get you nowhere to take nothing from nobody unless you make sure it's for Keeps for good and all forever and ever amen. I won't be sorry to see them brickbats held down on us for a change pop bottles to they can come flying whenever they want to smash like Birmingham. I'm waiting on them to bring out the switchblade knives like Harlem in Chicago watch TV long enough and you'll see it all to happen on Beacon Street in to my flight. What's holding it back? That's all cuz it's in them. I'm ready myself for that funeral Olay may find me may catch me one day in spite of themselves. But I grew up in the country may try to Railroad me into the electric Cheyenne what that amounts to is something hotter than yesterday in the day for together, but I advised him to go careful ain't it about time US taxpayers starts to counting the moves starts to tell the teachers and the preachers and the judge is about so-called courts have folic can go even the president's so far. You are not being hunted for anything--but to find you. Now, come on back on. But people are dead now. And you're so hot without it ever been August yet. Anyways, I seen him fall. I was ever mode 1. So I reach me down my old guitar open nail in the wall. Cuz I've got naked Tire what I've held on pooping way back when and I never drop that never lost to forgot. It never talked about to get it again. Never give it away and I said in my chair with nobody home, but me and I start to play and sing a down and sing it down down down down down down down down down. If you had to look at that your overall career and chart progressions, where would you put yourself right now? I don't ever do that by not letting the car to me and it doesn't seem to me important only the piece of work at hand really interest me. I don't like to think of I just don't look at my working anyway like that. I split y'all still on the other process and you just thinking about the work at hand.
