August 29, 2000 - Last spring, another controversial food product hit the shelves. Irradiated beef is still a small percentage of overall beef sales, one of only two producers is in Minnesota, but Ron Eustice, Executive Director of the Minnesota Beef Council says that it has been very popular.
August 9, 2000 - The number of births to teenage girls in Minnesota has dropped 18-percent since 1991, giving Minnesota the fourth lowest teen birth rate in the country. However, while the number of babies born to teens of color has dropped too, it's still alarmingly higher than the rate for white teenagers. Nancy Nelson, Executive Director of the Minnesota Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Prevention and Parenting, says part of this trend is connected to economic status:
July 21, 2000 - Opponents of the Animal Genetics conference have been getting their word out to media organizations through numerous faxes and e-mails in recent days. Using words like "Farmageddon" "Frankenstein" and "Mad Scientists" groups like Grain RAGE are sounding the alarm about the potential danger of genetic experimentation on animals. Susan Lederer is an expert on the history of medicine at Yale University and has written about the public outcry surrounding human and animal experimentation. Lederer says the rhetoric in the animal rights debate can be some of the most extreme, pitting good against evil:
